As the first light peers over the tree tops and the cool crisp air floods the town of Tara, the echoing sounds of The Last Post could be heard. A crowd of some 100 people gathered to pay their respects at the Tara Memorial Hall on this day, the 25th April, ANZAC Day.

The Dawn Service began with a welcome from the well-known Graham Muller. The Anzac Dedication and Ode were given by Don Allen of the Chinchilla RSL. Wreaths were laid by Western Downs Regional Council Mayor Raymond Brown and representatives from Queensland Ambulance and Police Services. The service was complete with prayers from Father Jack MacGinley, National Anthems of both Australia and New Zealand and the soothing tune of ‘Amazing Grace’.

The silent crowd slowly shuffled into the function room to enjoy a free breakfast provided by the Tara Men’s Shed. Amongst them were the Fargher-Roache brothers - Lawrence, Damien and Michael. The Roache family was one of the original pioneering families in the Tara District, arriving in 1909 and Roache’s Road is named in their honour. The three brothers returned to Tara to pay their respects to their great uncles, Jack and Mick Roache who fought in WWI. Sadly, Mick was killed on his first day in battle at Cappy and he was laid to rest in Viller Brettoneux. Damian Fargher was fortunate enough to visit Viller Brettoneux and laid a wreath in honour of his uncle at the 2013 Anzac Day service. Mick Roache fought at Pachendale Menzies Ridge in the 23rd Machine Gun Battalion. He was lucky enough

to return to Tara after the war in 1923. This year, Lawrence, Damien and Michael returned to Tara but did not come empty handed; they brought flowers of remembrance for their uncles and a book of family history entitled “The Fargher Story”, written by Michael Fargher. Michael was kind enough to leave some copies of the book around the district and you can access one of these at the Tara Library.

The sun rose higher and the day service began with the traditional Anzac Day March lead by Jack Wilson, returned serviceman of the Light Horse Brigade and the oldest living serviceman in the district. Representatives of The Gums State School, Tara Shire State College and St Joseph’s School, Tara, all participated in the march amongst other notable community members and organisations.

The official address of the service was given by Captain Kieran Morgan, Oakey Army Aviation Training Centre. Each year, the address includes a moving segment on one of our local servicemen and this year, Captain Kieran Morgan told the story of Frank Neal. Don Neal of ‘Grace Park’ was there to hear the address and laid a wreath in honour of his uncle. Don Neal was able to chat with Captain Morgan and both enjoyed examining Frank’s medals that Don still has in his possession today. Overall, both services were very moving and emotional for many and were said to be ‘one of the best’ yet.

Tara Catholic Fete

1.

2. 3. 4.

The Tara Catholic Fete went off with a blast last month! Despite poor windy weather, fete volunteer, Carmel Gunther, said, “The day overall was a massive success”. The auction was a big attraction and had in excess of 200 buyers. Elders sponsored the event by providing auctioneers, Ashleigh and Mick, from their Dalby office. The pig and poultry lots proved to be very popular and were said to be of a very high standard in terms of breeding and presentation. Many stalls were on display also and included cake stalls, preloved clothing, plants, seedlings and much more. Stall holders were happy with the result and all stalls were sold out by the end of the day. The fete raffles sent some lucky attendees home with a winner’s grin. Barbie Somerfield from Tara took home the wheelbarrow full of goodies and Rodney Mobs from Dalby won the money tree.

Students of St Joseph’s School performed some fabulous segments from the well-known musical ‘Joseph and the Technicolour Dream Coat’ to entertain the crowd. There were some great activities for the kids to get involved in. St Joseph’s teacher, Mary Porter, had a fabulous game of Hoopla going with prizes for all ages. There was also face painting and a jumping castle that the children found to be fabulous amusement.

Carmel said that the event organisers were pleased with the success of the day and they are all looking forward to next year’s fete which will be held on Saturday, the 2nd May. Father Jack MacGinley welcomes any volunteers or donations that may assist with the 2015 Tara Catholic Fete.

Moonie State School unveiled a special plaque on a 1.5T sandstone boulder on 24th April as part of their ANZAC Day commemorations. This is the only place in the township of Moonie where people can gather and remember the sacrifices made to keep us free. The plaque was unveiled by Anne Markham, (a parent of students at Moonie) who organised this with the assistance of Gayle Clerke from Dalby RSL who also did much for the organisation.

Mr Dan Hoefler from Dalby RSL gave a small and informative talk on the significance of ANZAC Day, showing a copy of a ‘death penny’ or ‘commemoration plaque’ given to all families of British soldiers who died in World War 1. He also donated a medallion to Moonie State School which includes, in a tiny glass vial, some actual sand from Gallipoli. This will be displayed proudly at the school.

In the 99 years since the Gallipoli landing, many soldiers, both male and female, have represented Australia overseas in wars and conflicts. The crowd of over 100 people listened to The Ode, The Last Post and used the minute’s silence to reflect on what this

meant to them. Moonie State School students also beautifully recited ‘Last

Anzac’, ‘A Tribute to Anzac Day’ and ‘In Flander’s Fields’. Moonie residents now look forward to commemorating days such as this at the front of the school with this permanent reminder of our history.

We started the weekend off with a minutes silence to honour Graeme Acton, whom many at the Draft admired greatly. The event was a little bit busier than usual with an extra day of drafting on the Friday which was a huge success.

Once again the Friday night kebabs were a hit with the committee ladies making over 500 and not one left in the canteen at nights end.

Saturday night an auction was held at the bar to raise money for the Simmonds Family Appeal, eight stallion service fees and two young geldings were auctioned. Thanks to the extreme generosity of the stallion owners and others, $16,500 was raised for the Simmonds Family.

Once again the Meandarra State School P & C ladies didn’t disappoint, putting on a delicious dinner which everyone raved about. I can’t forget to mention the fantastic effort the Glenmorgan Kindy did in keeping the drinks flowing all night on Saturday night, it was a fun night had by all.

The drafting was fast and furious, and thankfully safe, as Wilsons First Aid Services supported by QGC, wasn’t needed all weekend. I’d like to thank the committee for their tireless efforts all weekend from the back yards to the canteen to the Secretaries box, all efforts are voluntary and a lot of times go unrecognised but are always greatly appreciated.

The weekend could not and would not run without our valued sponsors, a massive thank you to all our valued sponsors. I would like to give a special thank you to our last minute sponsors; QGC and Origin, for their valuable contribution.

Tara Farewells Long-Standing Director of NursingAfter a 52 year career in health services, Tara Hospital’s long-standing Director of Nursing, Dian Shea, will retire this year.

Mrs Shea came to the rural facility in 1976, after spending time in Adelaide and Chinchilla.

During her tenure, Mrs Shea has become a well-known identity in her community and has worked hard to build up support for the remote health facility.

“One of the best things about being in a small, rural town is that you are a part of the community and you have their support,” Mrs Shea said.

It is these community connections that Mrs Shea says she will miss the most, as well as relationships developed with other Darling Downs Hospital and Health Service staff members.

“I found out recently that I delivered one of our staff members,” Mrs Shea said.

“For a while, I thought it was a running joke!”

“But I looked it up in the maternity notes, and

there he is. He was one of the first babies I delivered here.”

DDHHS Executive Director of Nursing and Midwifery services, Judy March, said Mrs Shea’s experience and dedication to the community of Tara would be missed.

“On behalf of the health service, we wish Dian well as she enjoys her retirement,” Mrs March said.

Mrs Shea will take extended leave until her official retirement date in November.

Watch Out For ‘Bashers’!Several Variety Queensland organisers of this year’s bash came through our area recently, planning the route of this year’s XXXX Gold Variety Bash. It’s not a race and the journey IS the destination and is loads of fun and wonderful help to many children. 2014 XXXX GOLD ‘CANE TOADS TO COCKROACHES’ VARIETY BASH starts in Brisbane and ends in Sydney from the 8th to the 17th August this year.

In 1990, the very first Queensland Variety Bash took to the roads, with the crazy characters in their wacky themed cars crossing creeks, tackling dirt and enjoying the adventure of the outback – all in the name of fundraising.

Since those early days, the event has grown exponentially and these lovable larrikins have collectively raised over $17million for the sick, disadvantaged and special needs children of Queensland!

In 2014, we celebrate our 25th Anniversary Variety Bash beginning in the capital of ‘Cane Toad’ kingdom at Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane and finishing ten days later in the heart of ‘Cockroach’ country in Sydney.

The Variety Bash started as a drive in the Outback with a few mates. In 1985, Adventurer, Dick Smith, took a group of intrepid motorists from Bourke to Bourketown in their old cars, raising money for charity along the way. All of the money raised went to the Variety Club of Australia to further its support of sick, disabled or disadvantaged children.

The Bash has been staged by Variety since 1985 and the spirit of the original idea has been retained. Every entrant has to raise money for Variety and all vehicles must be 30 years old or older at the time of entry and be non-performance modified. The Bash is not

a race, rally or speed trial. The single most significant rule of the Bash is to relax and enjoy the event away from everyday pressures, while seeing and experiencing the splendour of the Australian Outback.

Watch out for this iconic event travelling through our area in August, stopping for lunch at the Moonie Sports Club on Saturday, 9th August in their wonderful classic and colourful vehicles. For more information, please go to www.variety.org.au/QLD/Events/bash/

Andy’s Agro RoundupRust Management in Early Oats

Here is an overview on some management practices to help with the prevention of rust damage in oat crops.

As there is only one variety of oats that is resistant to leaf rust (Aladdin), with this all the other oat varieties are susceptible and will become affected if conditions are suitable.

The current season is favouring this with early planted crops, very dewy mornings and the occurrence of rainy weather, an outbreak will occur.

Here are some options:

Keep crop canopy open to avoid humid environment for fungus to grow, graze crop early but should be delayed until secondary roots are well established so plants are not pulled

out and before stems begin to elongate. This usually corresponds with about 25cm of growth for upright types and 10–15cm for prostrate varieties.

For quick recovery, do not graze too low. Where possible, only graze down to the height of the lowest stem node— about 12–15cm (5–6 inches) above ground level. Avoid hard grazing, as this can remove the growing points and delay subsequent regrowth.

Strip grazing with electric fences to control stock feeding, stock will prefer certain areas of the crop and not others, ungreased areas will be where rust will take hold and infect the rest of the crop forcing stock to gaze and open up the top of these areas will reduce the severity of an outbreak.

Fungicide sprays Tebuconazole (e.g. Folicur) and Propiconazole (e.g. Tilt) are registered for control of leaf rust and stem rust on forage oats in Queensland and can be a useful management tool.

Fungicide is very cheap per hectare and can be mixed with broad leaf herbicide application.

Sometimes red-tipping of leaves is associated to rust but is usually a symptom of nutrient deficiency on grazing oats. It is associated with low levels of nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, zinc or sulphur in the soil. Nitrogen deficiency is the most common cause, a crop with good nutrition will have better chance of fighting off rust pathogen. Good fertilizer program is similar to wheat requirement .

Hannaford School News

Six Hannaford school students participated in the NAPLAN (National Assessment Program Literacy and Numeracy) testing program last week. Each student received explicit instruction in NAPLAN type testing leading up to these tests. Every week, throughout the whole school year, our students have NAPLAN type questions included in their everyday instruction. Test results are distributed to schools and parents around September. These results inform and direct future teaching and curriculum direction.

We have an active Student Council at Hannaford School. The current committee organises charity fundraising events, orders new school equipment and organises special days. At the end of each term the student council hold a fun day of activities. Last term the students held a movie day, which included fancy dress and party food.

Each year the Hannaford students, staff and parents march at the ANZAC Day parade at either Meandarra or Glenmorgan. This year the students participated in the ceremony at Glenmorgan. We also had an RSL representative from Chinchilla visit our school to discuss the importance of ANZAC Day.

Extra curricular activities form a critical part of the life-long learning that takes place at Hannaford school. Participation in any sporting activity can provide much more than just physical development. Each year the students receive specialised tennis instruction from a qualified tennis coach.

Ros Bougoure, A/- Principal

Meandarra School NewsThere’s never a dull moment at Meandarra State School with the past months seeing major maintenance works, lots of crafty gifts for mum and fun with Funky Hair Day!

Important maintenance works have been undertaken at Meandarra State School from the beginning of the year and we have seen some excellent improvements to our facilities. The Prep to Year 2 Classroom and the Administration Block have both received internal repaints, the Library has had a long overdue revamp inside and out and our swimming pool including the amenities block are just like new! This is all part of the Department’s Direct to Market initiative – putting school’s in charge of their own major maintenance.

Fundraising for worthy causes is always high on our Project Club’s agenda and last term they chose to hold a ‘Funky Hair Day’ for the Leukaemia Foundation. Children contributed $2 each if they wanted to colour their hair and a further $2 for the opportunity to NOT wear the school uniform on the day. We saw some very funky hairstyles and raised a lovely contribution for cancer research.

Most recently we were busy creating lovely gifts for our mums for Mother’s Day. Lots of time, thought and love went into creating our gifts and we hope all mums were deservedly spoilt on their special day.

Tara Shire CollegeTara Shire State College has welcomed two very special guests back to the school this term. Singer/songwriter Josh Arnold and filmmaker Lindsay McAuley, both of whom have strong family ties to Tara, have been working with students across the College. Josh has been creating songs, which students will perform later in the year. Josh will also be featured with Tara SSC students in an upcoming episode of the ABC program, Landline. The focus of the Landline episode will be to showcase the work that Josh has done over the past three years with the students of Tara SSC.

Lindsay McAuley has also been working with Josh and Year 12 students to produce a documentary. In 2011, the college instigated a project called Future Visions. The aim of the project was to track the current Year 12 students from Year 9 to graduation. The students attended two Leadership camps at Emu Gully in 2011 and 2012. After the second camp, they were filmed being interviewed by teacher, Mr Ken Murdoch. This year, Josh has re-interviewed eight of the students and Lindsay has just finished producing

the Future Visions documentary. Participating students have found it very amusing to look back on what they thought in Year 10 and are delighted to see how much they have grown as people.

Josh and Lindsay originally teamed up in 2012 to help celebrate the centenary of education at Tara Shire State College. Josh and Lindsay produced the hugely popular Tara Shines CD and DVD, which showcased our talented students. All students currently participating have enjoyed their time with Josh and Lindsay and are looking forward to future visits from the pair.

Cake Decorating Classes – Practise Makes Perfect! In 2009 when Mary Reid and Cheryl Stace opened Merivale Cakes and Crafts at Highfields, the super hype surrounding the current cake decorating revolution was just starting. In the 5 years since they began teaching their Sugarcraft range at their Highfields cake studio they have introduced over 50 different classes, presented up to 70 certificates each year and have taught over 200 students (with some travelling from as far as Emerald, Roma and Townsville.

Merivale’s training portfolio ranges from beginner, intermediate to advanced, with some custom-designed classes (to suit the individual skills needed) and user choice (where students can choose the mix of skills that they wish to advance). Delivery options include day, evening, week day and weekend classes and small class sizes which allows for maximum attention for students.

In August and November 2014 Merivale will run beginner classes in Chinchilla. With many western Queensland students travelling to Highfields for classes, Merivale has decided to run two trial workshops in Chinchilla to see if there is a market for further classes in rural communities.

However Merivale do a lot more than create amazing cakes for clients and run a school. They are also very active in using their craft to support the community. On an annual basis, they run demonstrations for schools and community groups, creates cakes for charities, provide sponsorships for the Brisbane Ekka, Toowoomba and Goombungee Shows, and conduct community workshops at the annual Cobb & Co Museum Have-A-Go

festival and the Highfields Cultural Centre. Recently Mary negotiated an agreement with three rural shows to provide sponsors and judging until 2016.

Merivale conduct a range of business development classes and mentors a group of advanced students who are almost ready to open new business ventures of their own. To accelerate the skilling for these students Merivale organises workshops (in Highfields and Melbourne) with some Australian and world class Sugarcraft specialists and authors to teach at their Highfields studio.

The success of Merivale’s Sugarcraft classes can be measured by their students’ results from the regional and Royal shows and the international expo competitions and tours that they organise. During the 2014 Toowoomba and Goombungee shows students achieved over 30 awards; and at the UK 2012 and 2013 international cake decorating competitions students won a combined 9 awards. These are amazing results particularly as the competition pieces were transported safely half way across the globe and in light of the high standard of entries, against very experienced decorators.

These achievements are truly inspiring and they are from a local Highfields business………. which is passionate about passing on the art of cake decorating to all aspiring students.

Modern Weaning Strategies – How Much Has Changed?Good cattlemen know the benefits of looking after young stock. Calves that are well grown and properly weaned show excellent health and vigour. In that respect, not much has changed in the last 100 years. Good cattlemen still have good cattle.

Research gives the benefit of confirming that we are doing the right thing. So what has science proven, that good cattlemen already know?

1. Feed the cow for a healthy weaner: Cow milk yield is the chief determinant of weaner weight. Good milk production not only requires energy and balanced protein, but supplemental vitamins and minerals are absolutely essential. Anipro consistently adds about 40kg to a weaner off supplemented cows.

2. Concentrate on udder health: There is renewed interest in mastitis reducing beef cow milk yield. Studies prove that nutritional supplementation reduces mastitis. That’s one reason why well fed cows have healthier calves. Only Anipro constantly delivers the correct amount and balance of trace nutrients in a palatable package.

3. Yard or Paddock Weaning: Beef CRC studies show that yard weaned cattle out-perform paddock weaned; mainly due to a reduction in stress. By supplying a familiar supplement in the yard, performance is also boosted.

Studies show that liquid supplements are more effective at delivering nutrition to young stock, when compared to dry feeds.

Graziers have been using Anipro liquid supplement as a principle weaning tool for 20 years. Anipro provides all of the nutrients essential for cow health and milk production, and is safe for young stock at weaning. Anipro

consistently returns a 3:1 return on investment for a weaning program when direct costs and returns are considered. Add in the other benefits of improved fertility, heavier weaning weights and less-tail on the weaner mob and any good cattleman will tell you, Anipro is a sensible and economic management tool for weaning.

Forkforce AustraliaForkForce Australia launched its new Enforcer rough terrain forklift range in mid 2013.

To date the Enforcer rough terrain forklift has been a massive success in Australia with over 1000 Enforcers forklifts sold. The rough terrain has been developed specifically for the Australian market and to Australian standards.

According to Adrian Martin, Operations Director at ForkForce, “We had to double our original order and the factory has been working overtime to keep up delivery because there has been such a high demand ever since we introduced them to the market mid-2013”.

The launch of this range has been an Australia wide success with particular interest for

the rough terrain forklift from ForkForce’s Toowoomba branch.

The range currently includes 2.5 and 3.5 tonne lift capacity with lift heights from 3.3m to 6m in both 2 and 3 stage masts.

ForkForce attributes the success of these units to being the most competitively priced rough terrain forklift in the market with great features like its compact design, high ground clearance, integral side shift, traction tyres and high quality Yanmar engines.

Martin went on to say, “The popularity has been so high that our own hire department is struggling to secure these units for our hire fleet because most of these forklifts are selling even

before they have arrived”.

Even more promising than the huge success these forklifts have seen in the Australian retail market has been the number of forklift dealers around Australia who have been quick to acquire these new rough terrain forklifts for their own rental fleets!

Forkforce’s product range includes everything from walkie stackers, reach trucks, 1 tonne to 25 tonne forklifts with an extensive range of lift and reach capacities and fuel types.

For more information or a quote on a new 2.5T and 3.5T Enforcer rough terrain forklift, please contact ForkForce on 1300 42 3675.

Be Smart With Your Finance When times are tough in small business, it makes it even more important to ensure you are managing debt the best way possible.

Time and time again we see businesses pick up a piece of equipment or a vehicle using their overdraft when they should have considered finance by lease or chattel mortgage (CM) instead.

Overdrafts are designed to help you manage fluctuations in cash flow, not to buy ‘stuff’. Even if you have available cash, it’s worth considering a CM as it can be more profitable to free up cash rather than have it tied up in equipment or vehicles.

You might think that you don’t want to go through the hassle of applying for a specific loan for the item, but you’d be surprised how smooth the process can be – especially if you use an experienced broker. In the long run, it is often worth the extra time to get the finance. A CM is similar to a house mortgage. The ownership of

the equipment or vehicle is yours on purchase and a mortgage stays over the goods as security until the loan is repaid in full.

A CM is usually a fixed interest loan paid off over a one to five year term. Using a CM can really assist with business profitability, especially while interest rates remain low. You can choose to make a lump sum payment (balloon), at the end of the loan term, which means your regular repayments will be reduced. CMs can also be useful for those who are cash accounting, as you can claim the GST component of any vehicles or equipment you purchase upfront.

Also - don’t just think of CMs for vehicles or factory equipment. Recently we arranged finance for a new air-conditioning system for an office building.

Most importantly, consult with your accountant before making any purchases so that you can fully assess the taxation and cash flow consequences and make sure you are making the choice that is

right for your business.

Cosmetic Elegance Clinic Turns SevenSeven years ago Dr Eddie Roos realised a long held dream. “I saw the synergy that could occur by combining a medical skin practice with a beauty salon: medical treatments with the best cosmetic outcome in mind. It was a new concept at the time but I truly believed patients would benefit from a more holistic approach to skin care. With a dream and a business plan, Cosmetic Elegance Clinic was born.”

Now, seven years later, the clinic has grown beyond Dr Roos’ expectations. It is a comprehensive skin clinic, encompassing cosmetic and beauty treatments, a world class laser clinic and, with his special interest in the diagnosis and treatment of skin cancer, a well-respected skin cancer clinic too.

“But we couldn’t have got to where we are today without our dedicated staff,” said Dr Roos. “Together we aim to provide our clients with skin care that is uncompromising in its professionalism and quality, in a comfortable and personal environment.”

Cosmetic Elegance Clinic is serious about skin care, with a passion for their treatments

and love for what they do. Practice manager Gil Campbell said, “We believe in an age of increasing technology that personalised service is imperative. Our clients’ needs come first, and

we endeavour to answer any skin concerns and questions no matter how big or small.”

Stress – It Can Affect Us AllThe founder of World Organic, Megan Douglas, has been kind enough to provide me with the following information to help some of my readers cope and deal with stress. Stress affects many of our friends and family members and the effects it has on our overall well-being and physical health can be detrimental.

How To Manage Stress: It is important to remember that stress need not affect us in a negative way. It is created by our reaction to situations and not by the situation itself. If we can temper our reactions, if we can manage life’s roller-coaster with a degree of equanimity and perspective, then we can minimize the adverse consequences of stress.

Stress management tips that may help you:

• First and foremost, know what your stressor is! Too often, people accept that they are stressed without taking the time to properly think through exactly what it is that is making them stressed. Anything can cause you stress – your work, your relationships, your body image, even the poor performance of your favourite sports team. Learn to identify what is making you stressed. It’s a necessary first step in dealing with the problem.

• Try meditation. The benefits of meditation are vast. If you’ve got the time, have a look at our blog on meditation in the ‘Soul’ section of our website. The simple action of breathing in a meditative state will add oxygen to your system and will bring you a measure of focus and control.

• Moderate your consumption of alcohol and/or cigarettes. They’re crutches. They might dull the feeling of stress in the short term, but they do nothing to help the problem and have their own health-related costs.

• Live well. Get a good night’s rest (seven hours minimum), eat healthily, exercise, pamper yourself occasionally, make time for family and friends, get a pet (if you like animals!). All of these things have been shown to help mitigate against stress.

• Know your limits and be prepared to either say no or get help. It’s when we take on too much that we’re most likely to experience stress.

• Try hypnotism. Like meditation, hypnotism can be particularly useful in helping you manage the causes and symptoms of stress.

Have a look at our ‘Mind’ blog to discover the many benefits it can offer.

• Look after your skin. When you become stressed, the amount of blood and oxygen which is supplied to your skin lessens dramatically. As a result, your skin will often take on a grey pallor and become dry, flaky and prone to irritation. When this happens, it is as important to care for your skin as it is for your general physical and emotional self. Take the time to cleanse and moisturize, and even visit a masseur if you can. Hopefully,

we don’t need to tell you that your skin will repair itself much more quickly if you use natural, organic products rather than synthetic ones!

So, there you have it. It’s highly unlikely, unless you live in a cocoon, that you can avoid stress. However, if you opt for a thoughtful, balanced approach to life you can manage it and you can master it. In the end, that’s a much more desirable option than having it master you.

Ask OptomTomYour questions answered by the experts at Eyecare Eyewear

I keep seeing these ads on TV. What is my macular and why do I need to get it checked?

The macular is the central area of the retinal at the back of your eye responsible for high resolution or detailed sight. It is a highly organized structure and unfortunately, easily prone to damage from accumulations of cellular debris and leaky new blood vessels. This is called Macular Degeneration or MD. Further information can be found at: www.mdfoundation.com.au

While MD is a devastating problem for sufferers, it is also quite a problem for our society as well. A recent study called and commissioned by

Novartis Pharma and conducted by Deloitte Access economics (Eyes on the Future) estimated that the total societal cost of vision impairment and blindness from all forms of AMD in Australia was slightly more than $5 billion per year. So do it for yourself or for Australia and get your macular checked.

ProbioticsBenefits of taking a Probiotic with an Antibiotic:

There is a constant battle going on in our digestive system between “good” and “bad” bacteria. The use of certain medications may disrupt the balance and may cause uncomfortable digestive upsets. Probiotics are live microorganisms thought to be beneficial to the host organism. A probiotic can be used daily to contribute to the “good” bacteria in your digestive tract.

Why may a customer need to take a Probiotic?

Individuals taking antibiotic medication or possibly individuals with lifestyle factors such as poor diet, high alcohol intake and excessive

stress which may cause uncomfortable digestive upsets.

Benefits of taking a Probiotic may help to:

• Defend against and reduce the frequency of diarrhoea caused by antibiotics or lifestyle

• Support digestive health during the use of medications which may disrupt gut bacteria membranes

• Promote healthy gastrointestinal function• Top up beneficial bacteria in the digestive

system• Benefit in times of occasional digestive

upset

• Support digestive system health and wellbeing

Up to 10% of an individual’s daily energy needs can be derived from the by products of the good bacteria in your gut. Furthermore, probiotics can provide multiple benefits for your immune system and are generally regarded as safe and well tolerated but should be avoided in patients who are severely ill or immunocompromised.

Come in and speak to one of our friendly staff of Pharmacist at Dalby & District Friendly Society about taking a probiotic.

Tara Polocrosse ClubThe Tara Polocrosse Club has had a wonderful start to the 2014 season with several working bees, a horsemanship clinic, practises and three carnival attendances to date. We were disappointed that our Tara Campdraft was postponed in February due to the dry weather and limited availability of quality cattle at the time. Further discussion will be held at future meetings to decide if the event could be held later in the year. Our Annual Polocrosse Carnival will be held on the 14th and 15th June with visitors and spectators having the opportunity to enjoy the great display of horsemanship and skill that the sport of polocrosse has to offer.

Our Club has twenty one registered players this year with the recent addition of two overseas’ players - one from Canada and the other from New Zealand - playing for our Club. The Doyle family are hosting Luke from New Zealand while the Neal family are hosting Isabel from Canada. Club members have already attended the Warwick, Tansey and Clifton Carnivals. Results from these carnivals are:

Warwick – With many of the club members attending the event as spectators to watch some of the best polocrosse in the country, this only left six players competing in the Warwick Barastoc Carnival. Jessica Wilson, Rhys Chapman and Robert McDonald played in the Warwick Carnival Competition while Craig, Caitlin and Rachel Doyle were representatives in the Queensland Under 21 Teams that played in the Barastoc Competition which involves teams from Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria. Besides the usual day events, Warwick also hosts night games under flood lights.

Tansey - This was a compulsory Men’s, Women’s and Junior Carnival Competition. Tara had six players available for the weekend with the three Ladies playing in the B Grade and the three Men

playing in a C Grade competition. Unfortunately, there were no winning prizes taken home for the Tara Club this time, but with temperatures in the high thirties, above average for this time of year, it was hot and humid all weekend with both the horses and riders needing to keep hydrated and seeking shade at any opportunity.

Clifton – Despite the rain on Friday, and the extreme cold and windy weather that followed over the weekend, Tara sent thirteen players to the Clifton Carnival, with two full teams and an extra player taking their place in the Toowoomba Composite team. On Sunday, Tara and Chinchilla teams competed in the final with Tara successfully winning the A grade Family Competition. It was also a Tara player, Rachel Doyle, who received the Best and Fairest Player honours. Tara Two team went well winning two out of four games in the D Grade competition, taking out the D Grade Runners-up prize/s. Rachael Wilson was our spare this weekend and was fortunate to be able to play with two Junior girls from Warwick and the Gold Coast, making up a Toowoomba Composite team. They only won one of their four games, with a second game lost in the final seconds.

Tara BowlsA massive weekend of bowls took place on May 17 and 18, with several championship matches completed.

On Saturday, Jim Smith booked a spot in the “A” Grade Singles final after defeating Peter Matthews in comfortable fashion 26 - 7. Jim will be hoping that he gets to play his son and former Tara player, Joel, in the Champion of Champion event after he took out the Dalby title. Well done! The other semi-final will be completed this Saturday with defending champ, John Smith, taking on the in-form Craig Ensbey, with the final to be completed Saturday afternoon.

A bizarre end to the “A” Pairs match saw Laurie Boardman and Tom Duffy claim an 8 after an out-of-turn bowl from Craig Ensbey killed the end. The incident took place on the 19th end, and already having a 4 shot lead, Craig and partner Peter Matthews decided to concede defeat. Subsequent investigations revealed that the ruling was incorrect, however, the match was declared and Laurie and Tom proceed.

On Sunday, the Club Fours Championships were decided with four games being completed. This year, the Tara Club decided to play a round-robin type format to give players more experience under championship conditions. Round one of the event was played some time ago, so rounds two and three were completed to finalise the event. In the morning matches, Craig Ensbey, Tom Duffy, Peter Matthews and Eddie Jones gave defending champs Laurie Boardman, Pop Wilson, Jack McDonald and Lenny Wright a 30 - 9 hiding with Craig’s team

picking up 20 of the last 21 shots scored. The other match was much closer with Jim Smith, Denis Sommerfeld, Chris Baldwyn and Cliff Brauer claiming a last bowl one shot victory over John Smith, Matthew Prain, Frank McNamara and Darren Stark 21 - 20.

After the first two rounds of competition, all fours teams had recorded one victory, so the championship was an open event. Once again, John Smith’s team became engaged in a real arm wrestle, this time against Laurie’s team. Laurie’s team got off to a good start, but a 6 to John’s team on the 12th end gave them the lead at 13 - 12. The last 9 ends saw the lead change hands a couple of times, but with

John’s team leading 19 - 17 on the last end, Laurie’s last bowl narrowly missed the mark to give John a one shot victory this time 19 - 18.

Having such a big margin up their sleeve, Craig’s team only needed a narrow victory to take the title. They did in style, however claiming the last 19 shots of the match after Jim’s team had fought back to level the scores at 10 - all after 13 ends. In the end, Craig and Co triumphed 29 - 10 to record a 2 + 35 margin to take the title. John’s team finished runners-up on 2+5, Laurie third on 1 - 19 and Jim finished fourth on 1 - 21.
