LTO Media Reuse and Maximum Native Drive Speeds

Speeds shown are native rates. IBM i typically gets 3:1 compression on external tape drives, so the media will typically

hold 3* the amount shown and the drives may run at up to 3* the speed shown, unless they are bottlenecked by another

component in the path. Check the benchmarks in the Performance Capabilities Reference Manual for more information.

LTO WORM is not supported on IBM i

2008 July 22 announce

Note that a 520-M15 can only use smart (IOP-less) IOAs

since it can‟t attach extra towers, so tape options are:

• Integrated SAS drives shown on this page

• Smart SCSI IOA external drives – HH LTO2,

QIC SLR 60, QIC SLR 100, TS2230 HH LTO3

• Smart fibre IOA external drives

• Smart SAS IOA external drives

For other tape options, use a PCI card and attach an external tape drive

• IBM 7207-330 (QIC SLR 60)

• IBM 7212-103 (External Storage Device Enclosure) with

feature #1107 (QIC SLR 60) or feature #1108 (QIC SLR 100)

• Attach via SCSI smart IOA #5775 or via SCSI IOP-based IOA

Note: No QIC tape drive in the system unit bay - use an external QIC drive instead:

When reloading a system

using a drive attached to

need to do an “alt-install”

by booting to your

the list of attached drives

When reloading a system,

drives on the LVD SCSI

the *SAVSYS tape if the

card is in an alt-IPL slot.

Fibre drives need to be

direct-attached or zoned

so they are the only drive

visible to the card

To Estimate the Performance of a new drive:

• Figure out how fast the current drive is

running

• Match it to the benchmarks for the current

drive

• Read off the performance for the new

drive for that benchmark

Eg LTO2 at 40 MB/sec

Eg User Mix

Eg LTO4 – 65 MB/sec

Tape Drive Based Encryption RemindersThings to Remember

Hardware Required– LTO4 or TS1120/TS1130 tape drives

– Fibre or SAS (not SCSI)

– Drives must reside in a tape library (although it‟s OK to run in

sequential mode)

– LTO4 media for LTO4 or any TS1120/TS1130 formatted media

– Comparable gear at your recovery site

Software Required– If the EKM will be run on Windows, SUN or HP, purchase the “TotalStorage Productivity

Center – Basic Edition” software to get the IBM Java Runtime Environment (IBM JRE)

Encryption Key Manager (EKM) reminders– Don‟t encrypt your EKM

– Have multiple EKMs at your home site and DR site

– Save your EKM and send a copy offsite anytime your keys change

Other Reminders– Choose TS3500 / 3494 over other libraries since it can turn encryption on/off based on volser

– Include ALMS on a TS3500 order so encrypted/non-encrypted drives can share a TS3500 partition

– Hire IBM Lab Services to help with install/setup (contact Mark Even in Rochester)

Data de-duplication (often called "intelligent compression") is a method of reducing storage

needs by eliminating redundant data. Only one unique instance of the data is actually

retained on storage media. Redundant data is replaced with a reference or pointer to the

unique data copy.

1. Data elements are

analyzed to determine a

unique signature for each

2. Signature values are

compared to identify all

duplicates

3. Duplicate data elements

are eliminated and are

replaced with pointers to the

existing reference element

ASP Quiesce Function with IBM i 6.1

Suspends transactions & operations to DB2 and IFS to help ensure that as much in-flight

data as possible is written to disk

– Intended for use with applications running commitment control

– Places transactions at database boundaries if possible

– Backup will still be seen as „abnormal‟ but much friendlier

Use with storage based copy technologies eg

– IASP FlashCopy operations

– IBM i XSM Geographical Mirroring Detach

Applications without commitment control might be OK, but assessment and testing is

required

SAN Design for IBM i

Firm Rules

• Multipath is not supported for Tape

• Maximum Addresses per Tape Fibre adapter

• Fc 2765, 5704, 5761 – 16 devices

• Fc 5749, 5774 – 64 devices * 2 ports

• 32 Drives per TAPMLBxx

• Disparate Drives must be separated via

• Separate tape adapter cards

*or*

• Separate tape library partitions

Best Practices

• Put Tape Adapters alone on an IOP

or virtual IOP so they can be reset

• Plan Ahead for alt-install

• Don‟t Mix Disk/Tape on a Fibre

adapter

• Design for Performance and
