Indicated for palliative treatment of hyperthyroidism. Nursing Implications (what to focus on) Contraindications/warnings/interactions .Contraindicated in hypersensitivity. Use cautiously in patients >40 yrs. because of increased risk of agranulocytosis. No relevant interactions. Common side effects Rash Interactions with other patient drugs, OTC or herbal medicines (ask patient specifically) None Lab value alterations caused by medicine Thyroid function studies should be monitored prior to and during therapy. WBC counts and differentials should be monitored due to increased risk of agranulocytosis. May cause increased AST, ALT, LDH, alkaline phosphatase, serum bilirubin, and prothrombin time. Be sure to teach the patient the following about this medication Take around the clock. If a dose is missed, take as soon as remembered, if almost time for next dose, take both doses together.
