A SKI PIONEER’S DREAM
Taos Ski Valley is here today due to the imagination and hard work of a remarkable Swiss-German man, Ernie blake. a passionate skier, blake dreamed of building a ski area for his family, and in 1951, he found the perfect spot for a destination ski resort—a huge snow basin nestled in the sangre de cristo mountain range. since 1954, blake, his wife Rhoda, along with their children and grandchildren, have maintained and operated this one-of-a-kind, European-styled ski area.

A CONSERVATIONIST’S VISION
In early 2014, the Blake family sold Taos Ski Valley to renowned conservationist louis bacon. an outdoorsman and avid skier hailing from Colorado, Bacon is lauded for his eff orts in locking his privately owned land into conservation trusts. in 2012, bacon protected 170,000 acres of his land in southern Colorado in a perpetual conservation easement—the largest held by the U.s. fish and wildlife service.
Bacon’s team worked closely with the Blake family for several years to develop a masterplan of redevelopment for Taos Ski Valley’s base area, and expansion of the ski area’s mountain terrain, which includes a new chairlift to access the iconic kachina Peak.
The redevelopment is expected to honor the European character and fl avor of the existing ski area. bacon’s ownership will undoubtedly provide a viable future for many generations of skiers and snowboarders to come.
