POLICY & LEGAL REGIMES MINERAL POLICY OF 2009 Applicable Legislations in the Mineral Sector are: The Mining Act, 2010 The Explosives Act, 1963 Crosscutting Legislations The Environmental Management Act, 2004 Income Tax Act, 2004 Occupational Safety and Health Act, 2003 Public-Private-Partnership Act, 2010 Mining directly contributed about 3.3% of Tanzania’s GDP in year 2013. On average, the sector attracts FDI inflows to the tune of USD 460.86 mil. per year (1998 – 2011). Foreign export in 2013/14 was 36.6% of total national exports. Major mines directly employed 8,024 people in year 2013 of which 6% were expatriates. ASM Sub-Sector employs directly about 700,000 people Mineral rights granted increased from 11 licenses in 1990 to 1,560 licenses in 2013. This is a result of improved Mining Cadastre Information Management System and recently introduced use of online application for mineral rights. Currently, total number of valid Prospective Licenses is 3,500 and that of Mining and Special Mining Licenses is 403. Number of valid Primary Mining Licenses is 39,921. Tanzania is the 4th largest gold producer in Africa after South Africa, Ghana and Mali.
