Tantrum Theatre, Australia’s gutsiest theatre company for young people and emerging artists, celebrates its thirty-fifth birthday this year! We’ve had an amazing history unfold since that first Saturday afternoon drama workshop in 1976, and we haven’t lost our passion for nurturing and developing the young artists of Newcastle, or our commitment to providing theatrical innovation to the people of the Hunter region.

Tantrum is celebrating its 35th birthday with more workshops, innovative programs, fun activities and fascinating performances than ever before. Our young performers and the emerging artists who call Tantrum their home will have their skills put on display with a series of events that will shine a light on the theatrical talent burning brightly in our city.

The past thirty-five years have seen a name change from 2 Til 5 Youth Theatre to Tantrum Theatre; six artistic directors have led the expansion of the company from its humble beginnings to a nationally respected arts organisation; an increased focus on industry pathways for emerging artists aged 18-30; a continued commitment to the skills development and confidence building of young people aged 5-17; and a heartfelt love of drama.

This year we are making sure that more young people than ever can participate in our programs by keeping fees and ticket prices low, providing accessible venues for workshops, providing outreach programs to disadvantaged schools, and designing the best possible drama workshop programs on offer in the region.

Take a dive into our 2011 program and see that although we're getting a little older we haven't lost any of our spark - we're still young at heart!

Term 1 7 February - 9 AprilTerm 2 2 May - 2 JulyTerm 3 25 July - 24 SeptemberTerm 4 17 October - 17 December

Workshops Junior EnsembleTantrum offers the young people of Newcastle their best chance to creatively express themselves in a fun and safe environment through our after-school drama workshop program. Participants will increase their performance skills, develop their confidence and make new friends! We encourage all young people regardless of experience or ability to participate.

Tantrum’s workshop facilitators are all professional artists and arts practitioners dedicated to providing the highest quality drama experiences for our participants.

The Junior Ensemble will work towards two showcase performances in 2011: Funny Games (Term 2) and Keewee Froot (Term 4). Our 15-17 year olds will also have performance opportunities through Treasure Hunt (Term 1) and Theatre With Guts (Term 4).

Our after-school program runs for nine weeks each term. In 2011, Week One of all our terms corresponds to Week Two of school terms, which means that Week Nine (our final week) corresponds with the final week of each school term.

In 2011 Tantrum will ensure that one workshop in every age group is held in an accessible space and facilitated by a tutor experienced in working with young people with disabilities. These integrated classes are highlighted on our website.

This year Tantrum will also conduct a pilot workshop program for young people with disabilities. A non-integrated class for young people aged 12-17 will run concurrent with the Tantrum terms throughout the year. For more information, please check our website.

Senior EnsembleIn 2011 Tantrum returns to offering a weekly workshop program for 18-30 year olds that focuses on character building and working on scenes and monologues. The workshops are an exploration of drama skills styled to the experience and interest of the group. If you are new to drama and just want to have a go then we will be gentle; however if you want to expand your skills and be challenged then you will be challenged! Either way this will be a chance to play.

We encourage participants to increase focus, flexibility and ‘readiness to act’ and aim to expand your repertoire of characters and knowledge of character building. Leap into scripts and sharpen your eye for the details of interpretation.

This year Tantrum will also conduct a pilot workshop program for young people with disabilities. A non-integrated class for young people aged 18-30 will run concurrent with the Tantrum terms throughout the year. For more information, please check our website.

We offer performance opportunities throughout the year for people aged 18-30. These productions – As You Like It, Wonder, Silent Celluloid and Theatre With Guts – are all audition-based.

We are committed to the further development of young people and emerging artists, so if you have a desire to expand your skills in an area other than performance, please contact us. We always have opportunities on offer, all of which are regularly posted on our website.
