TANKS OF WORLD WAR 1BY:MIMI AND REGINA
The development of tanks in the great war was born because of the need to cross the gap
between the trenches at the front (no man's land)
Lieutenant-colonel Ernest Swington proposed the development of a new type of fighting
vehicle in 1914 .Wingston Churchchill was a supporter of this
idea
THE FIRST TANKSOne of the first tanks was constructed
in great Britain and was nicknamed "LittleWilly".
The tank was used for the first time at the Battle of Flers
The tank was a new machine and was highly unreliable. The idea of tanks came at first from farming vehicles.
• The tank was used to draw the fire of machine gunners and break down things like barbed wire. Then, when the enemies' machine gun overheated, or had to reload, the infantry attack would be launched. The infantry would flood through the gaps in barbed wire and other obstacles cleared by the tank, while taking much less fire than usual because the recently fired machine guns were inoperable.
British Mk 1was produced from 1916 as an infantry support and asault tank. It's armor
support was weak and it was prone to mechanical breakdown.
Conditions for the crew inside were dreadful, there was no space.
Tanks were uswd at the Battle of Somme but were not succesfull.WW1 tanks were very slow and
couldnt exceed 4 miles an hour .Tanks increased mobility on the
western front.
By 1918 Great Britain and France had produced about 6,500 tanks between
them.Germany had produced just 20.
6 days before the end of the war great Britain had only 8 tanks.
