Houston - Chuck Wood, Houston CSC Manager, has been participating In Toys for Tots since 2005. A total of $70,000 was presented to the Toys for Tots sponsor, Marine Corps. Over 170 children were each presented a bag of toys/bikes. Depending on their Christmas dinner needs, each family was given a 12lb to 24lb turkey. Several live Christmas Trees

were also donated for these families. Thanks in part to all the UPT associates who contributed a toy for the annual drive this year,. There were more happy families over the holidays. “Giving a little of your time does not hurt, but it sure makes some very happy kids” says Wood. He represented UPT at the annual event and hopes we have even more toy runs and donations next year.

Community Involvement

OKC - FaithWorks of the Inner City is a nonprofit ministry designed to meet the educational, spiritual, and physical needs of inner city children and their families. UPT supports this ministry throughout the year and particularly at Christmas time. This year UPT employees supplied Christmas gifts to 20 moms and their children through the “Mommy and Me” class, as well as the Kindergarten thru 6th grade age children. In addition, we had several volunteers who helped out during their Annual Christmas Party. A huge THANK YOU goes out to everyone who participated and donated their time and money to such a great ministry. We look forward to blessing this ministry again in 2012!

Wichita - “Touch A Truck” is a fun, family event enjoyed by kids of all ages! It features an assortment of vehicles; big rigs, fire engines, police cars, construction trucks and many more. UPT-Wichita was happy to participate this year. We

passed out candy and answered q u e s t i o n s about our company, equipment, driving and p r o d u c t s we haul.

One of the companies that UPT partnered with in 2011 is a group called Character First (CF). CF focuses on character-based leadership development at work, in school, at home, and in the community. They assist people and companies in emphasizing, recognizing,

and requiring character in daily decisions. We utilize them in a number of ways, including the on-boarding of new employees and the on-going training and development of our existing teams. I have had the pleasure of meeting with the CF staff on a number of occasions and am convinced that their focus fits neatly with our Vision and Mission statements. In our effort to support our commitment to Character First, I want to share a ‘working draft’ of ideas that many of you have shared with me in 2011. I believe these strongly support UPT’s commitments moving into 2012.

1. We will honor the intent of our Vision and Mission statements and get our folks home safely.

2. We will responsibly do more with less and be effective stewards of UPT resources.

3. We will sincerely focus on continuous improvement.

4. We will enthusiastically search out “Moments of Truth” for our internal customers - staff and drivers, as well as our external customers - shippers.

5. We will decisively address issues before they get worse.

6. We will show discretion when we disagree with someone; we will patiently listen to their point-of-view; we will strive to communicate our ideas effectively; and, we will look for flexible common ground.

7. We will be sensitive to other’s needs and make sure that the open door policy is used effectively to show respect and resolve issues.

8. We will enthusiastically develop our personnel and provide them with the resources they need to do their job safely and effectively.

9. We will strive to exhibit initiative and creativity in our actions and stand-out from our competition.

10. I left #10 open for additional thoughts.… I would also like to briefly highlight the Four Growth Initiatives that we are in the process of rolling out to the organization this year. We have organized cross-functional teams from all areas of the company to help finalize and implement these. The teams are composed of professional drivers, field personnel, sales associates, and operations personnel. While we believe that we are good in all of these areas, we strive to improve.

1) On-boarding: On-boarding is defined as not only the hiring staff and drivers, but more importantly, the development and retention of our team members.

2) Asset Utilization: Our goal is to significantly increase the utilization of our revenue producing assets. An idle tractor or trailer is similar to a vacant airline seat or hotel room – we need to leverage our resources to support our customers.

3) Business Development: We will expand our business opportunities with not only our existing customers, but also by developing and expanding new service offerings that fit our company strategy.

4) Service Quality: As mentioned in the last newsletter, we began focusing on cross-dumps and product mixes last summer, but we are expanding this focus to address all types of failures. The simple fact is that we control our results here; but to be effective, we have to identify the true root causes and correct them. The solution is not about pointing fingers; it is about determining how to avoid them before they occur again. We have a great team and I look forward to working with each of you in 2012. Thanks for your commitment to getting home safely every day.

Maintenance In 2012 UPT will complete the second year of a three year forecast

of truck replacements. Continuing with this plan of replacement allows UPT to have lower mileage units operating in our fleet and removing older units before they become costly issues. Our replacement strategies are to split the order between two manufacturers, Freightliner and Volvo. UPT split the order for a more competitive pricing structure and to operate units that can utilize multiple dealer support and warranty programs.

UPT will receive 2013 model year trucks in 2012 after the model year change in March. The split is twenty trucks per vendor. Current split is all day-cabs from Volvo and a split between day-cab and sleepers with Freightliner. Build dates will begin in mid-March with deliver continuing thru June 2012.

UPT continues to use the technology available in both brands. “Virtual Tech” and “Volvo Link” report a variety of potential issues in an email format to designated maintenance personnel. Not only the emission systems, engine and driveline systems, but any activation of stability and collision detection systems are monitored for safe, reliable operation. With the addition of this equipment to the standard truck configuration, we hope to purchase the safest operating truck on the road tody. If you have any questions about the new trucks feel free to contact me at [email protected].

The year 2011 presented many challenges for UPT. Coming on the heels of the largest revenue producing year in company history, it gave us some lofty goals for 2011. Our revenue for 2011 came in at 84 million. While behind 2010, it was still the second largest year we have had. The bright spots for 2011 were many and they included having 6 of our CSC show substantial growth over the prior year. Jon Floyd and his team in Phoenix grew by an amazing total of over $900,000 in one year, which was over a 17% increase. Fort Worth, Houston, El Paso, Odessa, Bovina also had increases in revenue for the year. I want to make special mention to Lance Burns and his team in Fort Worth. They recorded the largest year ever in DFW with a $9.6 million year and now how have the $10 million mark in their sights. Just barely behind the prior year were Albuquerque, San Antonio, and Topeka. 2012 promises to be an exciting and challenging year. With our team fully focused on being safe and the extensive recruiting efforts coupled with our driver retention efforts, the opportunities for growth are still unlimited. The Business Development team will continue to pursue all the potential business they can find. With everyone pushing together to sell and execute to our potential we can look forward to 2012 being a year of growth. Let's all focus on being the safest transportation company in the industry.

Happy Anniversary!

Welcome Aboard! Ron Holte has

joined the UPT team as CSC Manager in Shreveport. Ron has an extensive background in the tank industry as a Driver, Fleet Manager, Recruiting Manager, Tank Wash Manager,

Service Manager, and Terminal Manager. In addition, he has attended both the Basic and the Advanced Leadership courses presented by the NTTC at Purdue University. Ron and his wife Marci relocated to the Shreveport area in December.

EL Paso - October 25th – 27th our Risk Management team of Andy Walker, Richard Ortega, Lambert Cantu and John Hill provided training on “over the road tank trailers” to the El Paso Fire Department. Training included a classroom presentation on rollover management and included scene assessment, trailer types and case studies. A unique opportunity to see a tank trailer on its side was used to identify valves and their shutoffs, dome covers and the offloading of product. Participants learned the workings of tank trailers and were provided the opportunity to ask questions. Each training session averaged 22 participants per class.

Andrea and Justin Tulk, Tulsa Service Technician, welcomed a new baby. Paesleigh Dawnne was born on November 19, 2011 weighing 7.6 lbs and 19.5”.

OKC – Kooper Ruminer is a 6’3 200lb junior linebacker from Deer Creek, OK and is the son of Jeff Ruminer - Director of Pricing. Ruminer, who is getting some early NCAA Division I interest, recorded 136 tackles and 10 sacks in 2011. In addition, he was named to the 2011 Big All City team and All State Honorable Mention. Kooper was excited about his first visit as a college football recruit. Unfortunately, that first visit happened to be at the Tulsa-Oklahoma State game last fall. Ruminer, who has received interest from the Golden Hurricane, was on an unofficial visit. He talked to players, stood on the field and got a tour of facilities. But after a three-hour-plus weather delay, Ruminer decided to go home. Ruminer said he was disappointed his first college visit ended that way. The ill-fated visit came one day after another big individual performance by Ruminer in which he had 10 tackles, forced two fumbles and recovered one in a 49-14 win.
