• Tan Tee Chie was inspired by woodcut movement in China (1930s-40s)

• Clear outlines

• Variations in thickness and spacing of lines to create tones, textures, patterns etc. (e.g. leaves, fabric etc.)

• Does not follow linear perspective

• But still has sense of space and depth – Objects recede into space

• Contrast between

• Tightly packed crowd at bottom, almost a grey mass

• Birdcages at top, strong outlines standing out strongly from white background

• Contrast and space

• We follow the gaze of the crowd
