Yes, you are looking at a photo of me taken back in 1977, when I had the pleasure of meeting Dick Clark during my days in broadcast advertising. He attended a promotion for the Cincinnati, Ohio radio station I was working for at the time. His influence in the music industry was, and still is, legend-ary and it was one of the highlights from my career in the advertising business.

Who would have thought that we would have anything in common with Dick Clark? Just as Clark stated in the quote above—he didn’t set the trends in the music industry, he showcased the best-of-the-best musical acts on shows from American Bandstand to his New Year’s Rockin’ Eve celebrations. Here at Housetrends, we don’t set trends, we showcase homes in and around our city that best exemplify the latest and greatest home and garden ideas.

Just like your favorite song, your home should inspire you. It should tap into your emotions, whether to bring you peace or energize your mood. Quite simply, it should make you happy.

We hope you enjoy reading about the homes featured in this issue, which include a pair of eclectic kitchens and a dramatic Tuscan renovation in Odessa. It is our goal to be your destination for inspiration.

Sincerely,

Judy and Bob DeLuca and the Housetrends staff

‘‘ I don’t set trends. I just find out what they are and exploit them.

When Pip Heavenridge needed to find an interior designer for her

new house, she didn’t need to look far. Long-time close friend Tamara Martin

lived right next door. The friends, who met 15 years ago through their hus-

bands, already shared the same tastes in style and enjoyed each other’s com-

pany so it was an easy fit.

A friendly partnership“Tamara is an interior decorator with a tool belt,” Pip laughs. From guiding Pip and her husband in flooring and granite choices to faux painting the kids’ walls and hanging pic-tures, Martin was there every step of the way, with a few small exceptions. “I even sewed my own window treatments in years past, but I just don’t have the time for that anymore,” Martin says.

For Pip’s home, she designed all the window treatments and had them sewn for her. For custom-built pieces, like the guest bath vanity, she turns to her favorite contractor Jason Siling, of Jay Gee Construction, who turns her ideas into reality.

The color scheme of this home is muted, earthy taupe and brown with bright pops of deep red. “Pip originally wanted a Tuscany style so we worked with that as a starting point.” An important feature of the home is the gorgeous travertine tile flooring that is used throughout the home. Rich in color and texture, it truly is a design feature here. “Tamara had to convince us about this and we’re glad she did,” Pip says. “It definitely makes a statement.”

The same marble is used on some of the bathroom walls as well as the outdoor lanai. “I really felt the travertine was a piece of art,” Martin says. Another element found throughout the home is the faux iron. Used in many areas including as accent pieces on

the ceiling, as backing in an alcove and on the master shower windows, this compos-ite material looks like iron scrollwork but is far less costly and easily adaptable to many design needs. The repeated usage of this design element creates a thread that ties the home together.

Numerous personalitiesThis 7,300-square-foot home works well for this busy family. With five children at home, Pip knew she wanted each child to have a full bedroom, bath and walk-in closet so one wing of the home is devoted almost entirely to the children’s rooms.

Josh’s room features a fishing and hunting theme; numerous plaques for his fishing tournament wins decorate the wall. In Haven’s room sherbet green and lavender colors keep it bright and cheery. “She wanted it to be really bright and colorful. I stenciled the walls and added rhinestones for a little glamour detail. It fits her personality,” Martin says.

Chelsea’s room includes aqua blue walls with black and white accents. “We tried to do this a little more glamorous,” Martin adds.

Oldest son Cameron’s room reflects his love of fishing and is also a second master suite, while daughter Bree’s room reflects the more mature style of one who is already in college.

This wing also features a beautiful laun-dry room complete with full antique ivory cabinetry, a stainless steel LG Tron washer and dryer set, and a granite-topped center island. At the entrance to the children’s wing, a large open space originally designat-ed as a kid’s study area was turned into Pip’s office. Open and airy, it features a built-in desk area with storage cabinetry as well as comfortable seating. “This is where I come for my coffee in the morning,” Pip says.

At the other end of the home is the master suite with the husband’s office and a large bedroom and bathroom. The dark wood bedroom suite features lush bed-ding and draperies and soft pile carpet. The master bath was specially designed to this couple’s requests. With access from both sides of the room, this space fea-tures two separate vanity areas and toilet closets for both husband and wife. A full Jacuzzi tub with marble surround and a spacious shower with dual access is a cen-tral element in the space. A shared walk-in closet offers plenty of storage.

Entertainment destination“This house is designed for entertaining,” Martin says. The only formal area is the dining room to the right of the foyer. Richly decorated, it has close access to the kitchen for more formal dining. The open floor plan

means a large flowing kitchen and general family area. “We chose not to do a formal living room because we never used the one in our old house,” Pip says.

Comfortable seating faces the fireplace

and large television, for relaxed viewing. More places to play can be found in the game room on the opposite side of the kitchen. The huge space houses a full bar complete with a secret door to the kitchen

TOP: The pool table and full bar are just two of the highlights in the game room. ABOVE LEFT: The adults can also be found in the game room, enjoying a friendly game of poker. ABOVE RIGHT: The family often gathers for movie night in the game room.

pantry, as well as full-sized pool table, mul-tiple TVs and a poker table. Half the room is dedicated to movie viewing with plush leather couches for seating. The wall of win-dows facing the pool can be fully recessed

for parties but also have blackout curtains for the best movie viewing. As the co-owners of the Courtside Grill restaurants as well as a commercial produce company, the Heavenridges know how to have fun.

Family firstThe real heart of this house is the kitchen. A massive, T-shaped central island domi-nates the space. “We travel a lot and I saw this at a house we stayed at in Key West. I noticed that everyone always gathered

around the island every night and I said, ‘That is what I want,’” Pip explains. And it has turned out as planned; this is where everyone gathers. “We’ve even had little kids dancing on it,” Pip laughs.

No party house is complete without a place to play outside and this house is no exception. Situated on a picturesque 50-acre ski lake, this house has it all. The covered lanai boasts over 2,500 square feet and includes a full outdoor kitchen and offers plenty of places to relax and socialize. The large freeform pool, built by Landmark Pools, includes a beachfront entry and sunning platform as well as a mountain formation with waterfall and slide, an element both kids and dog love to slide down. A half-sized basketball court and a horseshoe pit make for some major competition.

“Every weekend the house is full of kids and adults jet skiing, playing football, horseshoes, you name it. My oldest daughter and son do bowhunting so sometimes they set up a fake deer in the yard and target shoot from the mountain. You just never know what you will find,” Pip smiles.

ABOVE: The 7,300-square-foot Tuscan home sits on a 50-acre lake that is often used for skiing and other water sports. summertime

The swimming pool of today offers much more than just a

shallow end and a deep end. For the past

few years, we’ve seen more and more

homeowners creating their own private

paradise right in their back yard. Pools fea-

turing unique shapes and attributes such as

infinity edges and grottoes have been all the

rage—and we don’t think these trends are

disappearing anytime soon. If you’re ready

to take the plunge and transform your back

yard into an outdoor oasis, we encourage

you to check out some of our favorite pools

for a little inspiration.

Pair of kitchen renovations shows off individual style

By Lyla Haggard ● Photos by Robert Lawson

The heart of today’s American home has become the kitchen. No

longer is food prepared behind closed doors, magically appearing at

the table, course by carefully timed course. In earlier decades, guests

would nibble canapés and sip martinis in the living room while deli-

cious aromas wafted throughout the house, emanating from a room

they rarely saw. Now most kitchens are located not only near the

dining room but as an integral part of the family room, where friends

and family gather around to chat and nosh while the cooks—no

longer just a wifely role but a dual-chef experience—chop, grate,

stir and sauté. ● Whether you prefer cool, sleek contemporary lines

or a more traditional mixture of warm colors and textures, as the

two kitchens featured in this article exemplify, the myriad options

and decisions can be overwhelming. These homeowners turned

to George Gobes, founder of Park Avenue Designs in Tampa, to

customize this important space in their homes.

For this completely renovated home, which was totally gutted, Gobes worked closely with contractor Chris Campbell and designer Christian Kamaris to continue in the kitchen the dramatic angular design established throughout the rest of the house. Graceful Italian halogen art lights overhead and LED lights underneath the cabinets give a sophisticated effect. The striking contrast of the bright white cabinetry, quartz coun-tertops, huge white Corian-topped island, white walls and French stone floor against the dark coffee-colored stained bamboo display cabinets and 1,200-bottle wine cellar makes a definite contemporary statement. Corian was chosen to top the work island in order to accommodate the 19x52-inch sink without having seams. Two modern faucets allow two cooks to work conveniently at the same time. The overhead cabinets also open upward for greater efficiency and access.

Since the homeowners enjoy cooking together, it was important to create a space large enough to accommodate various tasks. A 27-inch double drawer side-by-side Sub-Zero refrigerator, along with a mini-fridge, provides plenty of cold storage. An induction cook-top, quick-bake oven, warming drawer and two dishwashers allow the homeowners to

The hood’s four metal grills, which detach easily for cleaning, appear verti-cally on the wall in back of the cooktop, becoming a design element on the painted glass backsplash.

Built only sixteen years ago, this home had an attractive kitchen that was just beginning to look a bit dated when floor repairs in the family room offered an opportunity to bring it up to match the rest of the house, which had been modernized room by room over the years. Gobes’ challenge for these homeowners was to establish a new workflow by changing the footprint of the kitchen while still integrating it into the existing décor of the remainder of the residence.

Working with interior designer Gail Levine, who has overseen the changes in the home for the last eight years, Gobes created a hybrid of textures and finishes that combined the homeowners’ love of antiques with a more modern feel and increased efficiency. Dark wenge wood, soapstone and white Carrera marble countertops team up for an interest-ing, eclectic look. The paneling design and gray brush strokes on the cream cabinetry on either side of the work island give an antique barn effect. Wrought iron metalwork throughout adds touches of contrast. The stainless steel exhaust hood becomes a major design element thanks to its location over the cooktop in the center of the room. Attached to a ceiling beam, it gives a more casual, almost cabana-like feel to the island below. A sophisticated lighting system allows a wide variety of settings at the press of a button, anything from bright light for cooking to a soft glow while entertaining. Even spotlights are on the system to emphasize artwork on the walls and in display cabinetry.

Listening to the homeowners’ needs, Gobes added many special conveniences not found in traditional kitchens. Supplementing the new appliances, which include a Wolf cooktop and Miele steamer and coffee system, he created hand-crafted wood dividers for knife and spice drawers, pull-out work surfaces, an appliance garage, a special drawer for silverware, hands-free trash bins that the homeowners lightly kick to open, a cookbook station and two out-of-view niches for paper towel holders, a homeowner favorite. “Both of these kitchens are all about convenience and design,” Gobes says. “They showcase the homeowners’ individual personalities perfectly.”

Davis Island home keeps history alive

By Abby Weingarten | Photos by Johan Roetz

In 63 days, starting January 4th, Homeworks Builders of Tampa

took a 1945 ranch and replaced it with a new spectacular two-

story fit for modern times. Dubbed “La Vie en Rose” (mean-

ing “a rosy life”) and situated on Davis Island, the 67-year-old

home was torn down and a new one was built just in time to

be featured in the 42nd Annual Spring Parade of Homes where

it bewitched a Navy family from Coronado, California.

They are the Bakers: Stephanie, Anthony, their two daughters, and baby girl on the way. The quartet-and-a-half moved in on April 7th, just six days after the 3-week Parade’s end. For Stephanie, who was seven months pregnant during the relocation, the fully furnished, turn-key residence was as much exhale-inciting as it was easy on the eyes. “It’s nicer than I could have ever imagined it being,” she

says. “It was such a relief to have every-thing done when we got in there, and so beautifully. You want to get settled when you’re pregnant, and we were able to get right into the perfect house for us.”

Preserving a legacyThe original home born more than six decades ago as a 1,100-square-foot abode for George and Hilda Rose, a transplanted North Carolina couple. The couple raised three children there: Bob, Sam and David. The structure was first built for a military man who did not go through with the purchase (at the time, the sale price was $6,000).

Homeworks bought the property from the Rose sons in 2011, and under the company’s care, “La Vie en Rose” became a 2,943-square-foot home boasting four bedrooms and three-and-a-half bath-rooms.

Coincidentally, there are parallels between the Bakers and the Roses. They both moved from other states and had (or are expecting, this month) three chil-dren. Both clans were committed to rec-reating the rosy residence’s charm, as was Homeworks design director Marilyn Perez. “We wanted to show how you can do a smaller home that is equally sophis-ticated,” Perez says. “We received a lot of compliments, most of them about our attention to detail and ability to infuse charm through design details such as the barrel vaulted ceilings, plaster fireplace and wood windows.”

Family-friendly detailsSituated on a lot two blocks from the waterfront and village, the new house also includes energy-efficient double-pane windows, an 8-foot arched wooden front door, a gourmet kitchen connected to a family room with an eye-catching vaulted ceiling and rich oiled, 7½-inch plank oak floors.

The Bakers fell in love with the home’s signature details such as the freestanding soaking tub in the master bathroom, the mudroom message center and the round-ed corners. The front porch and exquisite landscaping completes the home’s old-fashioned feel.

More than 650 people toured the property during the Parade. Homeworks had even created a Facebook page where potential buyers could follow the home’s construction timeline. “We realized pretty quickly how much interest there was in this house,” Perez says. “This is a very transitional style – contemporary details but not cold and sterile. There is a tremen-dous amount of interest right now in that concept of smaller homes with high-end upgrades and designer finishes.”

Feels like homeThe Bakers were delighted with Perez’s vision. They loved the house so much they even purchased some of the furnishings and window treatments. When it came time to move in, they only had to pull up the luggage truck. “We were amazed with what we got for what we paid. In Coronado, you would get a very small house for this,” Stephanie says. “The Davis Islands are so similar to Coronado but so much more affordable, and they have every-thing we need.”

After living in a hotel for a week prior to the move-in date, the Bakers relished finally opening the front door to their haven and experiencing a little slice of cozy luxury.

The upstairs playroom keeps the toys from being scattered throughout the living room. A second floor guest room also allows the Bakers to have some “adult” space on the ground level and privacy when relatives visit.

The open floor plan in the kitchen is perfect for the expanding family. “We’re very excited to spend time on the screened-in porch and maybe enjoy a picnic in the back yard,” Stephanie says.

While the couple didn’t have a lot of say in the house because it was for the Parade of Homes, they say they couldn’t have made it better if they tried. “The designers were amazing,” Stephanie says. “They went above and beyond.”
