a letter from the publisherswelcome

For the homeowners featured in this issue, life has become quite the adven-ture. Chris and his wife, Andrea, have just completed their latest adventure—building their fourth home. They’ve circled the design spectrum and, this time, they have created a home that combines the modern qualities of an urban loft with the soft comforts of a rustic country manor.

In this issue, we set out to take you on your own adventure. In addition to the Stewarts, we’re introducing you to a couple who, after multiple trips to Italy, decided to build their own Italian-inspired home right here in Tampa. We loved strolling through the exquisite rose garden and we’re sure you will love perusing the pages featur-ing their home.

We’re also visiting a couple in South Tampa who used their admiration for contempo-rary design to create their ultimate kitchen and we’re touring a Northern Hillsborough County couple’s eco-friendly outdoor living space.

We hope you enjoy this journey around Tampa Bay. Be sure to go to our website, Housetrends.com and our Tampa Facebook page, for more home and garden inspiration.

Sincerely,

Judy and Bob DeLuca and the Housetrends staff

Editor’s Note: In the article “All the Right Moves” in our June/July 2011 issue, it should have stated that Mike Peterson was inducted into the University of Florida Hall of Fame. Mike and his wife, Chantal, also met when they were students at the university.

Figuring out how to do new things has been such an adventure. —CHRiS STEWART ’’

Superb Craftsmanship and First-Class Service at an Exceptional Value

New Homes – Renovations – Design“Yes, you can have a beautiful home built without the drama! Javic Homes’ main appeal is they build great homes, but they also communicate with you at every

stage of the house planning/ house building process. Everyone at Javic was a real pleasure to work with and always just a phone call or email away. Not only were they very professional - returning calls and emails, answering all of our questions and addressing any concerns in a very timely manner - but they really

took the time to make sure we understood the process of building a house and most importantly - they made it easy, enjoyable, and drama free!! That is quitean accomplishment! We were so pleased with Javic and how they built our home that we begged them to build our new office.” - Andrew Shein & Tien Tien

Couple builds a home with a rustic heart and a modern edge

By Christina Kleiner | Photos by Johan Roetz

Romanian sculptor Constantin Brancusi once stated,

“Architecture is inhabited sculpture.” A central figure in the

modern art movement, Brancusi has been recognized for

his ability to combine a variety of materials, from marble

and limestone to oak and polished bronze, into elegant,

abstract works of art. | That ability to combine various

materials in a cohesive, thought-provoking manner is a true

talent. The ability to take these same materials, plus a few

extras, and create an eye-catching, modern home that is

reminiscent of an abstract work of art is astounding.

Pushing boundariesChris and Andrea Stewart have developed a passion for building homes that reflect their sense of style. They also enjoy pushing the limits. “We’ve been married for nine years and during that time we’ve built four homes,” Chris says. “Our last home was French country, so we wanted something different.”

022-030 nFEA PointsOfView.indd 23 8/9/11 10:32:33 AM

The Stewarts approached this house much in the way Brancusi approached art, by creating something that incorporates a variety of elements and styles. The beauty of the nearly three-acre lot, which over-looks the lake and is covered in cypress trees, is what propelled them to purchase the house. “It wasn’t a small home by any means,” Chris says of the original house, which stood at more than 4,000 square feet. “But it wasn’t functional for a family of four. However, it had potential and the surrounding area was phenomenal.”

As owner of Couture Kitchen and Bath, Chris is familiar with the remodeling industry and says he was excited to take on a project of this caliber. Plus, the eclec-tic style, something both he and Andrea gravitate toward, was unique. “We were looking for an urban loft feel, but with rustic finishes.”

The couple hired architect Richard Hartmann to help bring their vision to life. “Chris and Andrea were the first cli-ents to come in and hand me a book about this style of architecture,” Hartmann says about the book, which described urban country style. “I read it cover to cover, and understood exactly what they had hoped to create.”

Hartmann came up with plans that called for gutting the existing structure and building up and out, essentially dou-bling the size of the home. “Between the addition and all of the covered porches the house is around 12,500 square feet,” Chris says.

Nod to natureThe front façade successfully establishes that connection between urban and rustic. The clean architectural lines and exposed steel pillars along the covered porch pre-serve the modern element, while the addi-tion of travertine and siding bring in the touch of country flair. But it is the rear of the home that explodes with modern character. “The back of the house is where you can see the angled lines, the project-ing roof overhangs and the exposed steel beams,” Hartmann says.

By angling the rooflines up, Hartmann was able to capture more of the view of the trees and lake. “There must be 30 or 40 cypress trees in the back yard alone,” he says. “We opened up the views both vertically and horizontally. The house is nodding to the nature of the site.”

A cozy interiorWhile the back porches and patios offer spectacular views all around, the Stewarts made sure the inside has its own unique touches. Chris credits his and Andrea’s ability to feed off each other’s strengths

022-030 nFEA PointsOfView.indd 26 8/9/11 10:33:05 AM

as the reason the home came together. “I tend to look more at the structural side of things and how every element func-tions together, while Andrea pulls all the aesthetics together to create a finished look.”

Upon entering the home, the foyer leads right into the massive living room, which boasts concrete floors, steel I-beams and a wall of windows looking out over the back of the property. Andrea teamed up with interior designer Lore Merida to create a cozy atmosphere. “The living room really sets the tone for the rest of the house,”

Merida says. “Andrea is fearless when it comes to trying something new.”

A dominating element in the living room is the cluster of five chandeliers hanging from the ceiling. One of the fixtures is a vintage piece Andrea found during a trip to Texas. She had it rewired and then found four accompanying chan-deliers to create the effect. “Mixing old and new is very important, and this home is the perfect example of that marriage,” Merida says as she points to the coffee table which was an old wagon that was chopped in half and then welded.

Sliding frosted glass doors at the base of the floating staircase lead to a playroom and bathroom. The second floor of the home houses the children’s bedrooms and bath-rooms, the master suite and a study/craft area. “Andrea’s color and material choices are very impressive, from the Sherwin-Williams Blackberry paint in the first floor bath-

room to the custom leather headboard in the master bed-room,” Merida says. “She has a great imagination.”

One of the family’s favorite spots is the lounge, located on the other side of the kitchen. Decorated with rich purple walls and white leather fur-niture, the highlight of the space is the large piece of backlit onyx behind the bar,

Sources of inspirationChris and Andrea say they generated a lot of ideas from commercial applications. It was during a trip to Barcelona when they came up with the idea to cover the living room staircase wall with wood. “We were initially going to use brick

which is something you often see in city lofts,” he says. “But we were in a restaurant that featured this unique wood wall and we thought that by incor-porating it into this space we would be able to achieve that rustic effect we were looking for.”

Chris had boards of pop-lar lumber milled and hand-ed them off to Andrea, who

stained them three different colors before installation.

The inspiration for the large piece of agate, a semi-precious stone, hanging on the living room wall came from a hotel bar. The stone sits in an 8-inch-deep box and is backlit with 350 LED lights. The couple says it creates a truly dramatic effect in the evening.

Artistic approachJust like artists, Chris and Andrea have created a well-defined, modern masterpiece. “The transformation is astounding. We love the simplicity of the house, everything flows, from the indoors to the outdoors,” he says. “Figuring out how to do new things has been such an adventure. We love the creativity and unique quali-ties this house offers.”

WilDAdd a little

pizazz to the bathroom

By Christina Kleiner

You might compare selecting the perfect tile for your bathroom to picking a needle out of a haystack. With the wide range of materials avail-able, from tumbled travertine to azure blue glass tiles, making a decision can be a daunting task. Think of tile just as you do paint colors—your selection sets the tone of your entire bathroom, whether you’re looking to create a contemporary retreat or a European spa. Let your imagination run wild because nothing creates a lasting impression quite like a unique tile design.

Mother Nature’s giftEveryone loves the rich look of natural stone, from the sleek veining of marble to the deep earth tones of slate, the design options are virtually limitless. Many home owners are also considering honed or tumbled travertine thanks to its tradi-tional appearance and durability.

The answer is clearIf you are looking for a modern design, consider covering the walls in glass tile or adding a border of glass in the shower or around the vanities. Iridescent and clear glass in a multitude of colors can add a touch of contemporary design to any bathroom.

Brian Schatz took on designing

the landscape for Roger and Terry

Sayyah’s new lakefront home, he

knew he wanted to create a design

that helped the home settle comfort-

ably into the surrounding landscape.

The Sayyahs had expressed that they

wanted a look that was easy to main-

tain, would go well with the low-slung

architecture of their home and would

enhance the peaceful surroundings.

With that in mind, Schatz chose to go

with a naturalistic style that helps the

home blend comfortably and enhanc-

es the natural beauty of the property

while addressing some specific site

challenges as well.

Establishing a connectionThe Sayyahs are longtime residents of this rural area of Northern Hillsborough County. “We had lived less than a mile from here for years and we always thought it would be nice to live on the lake,” Terry says. “We had the opportunity to buy this property but then we sat on it for 6 years before building.”

After much thought and planning, the Sayyahs built a beautiful new bungalow home with spacious grounds leading down to the lakefront. Much of the wooded area leading to the home was left intact creat-ing a natural, park-like setting.

OVERLEAF: A large flagstone patio behind the home offers plenty of space for entertain-ing. OPPOSITE: An arched bridge was built over the dry creek bed along the house. TOP: A small storage and garden shed is tucked along the path leading to the lake. BOTTOM: The driveway leading to the house curves through a grove of oak trees.

To approach the house, a winding driveway curves through a grove of oaks and native Florida vegetation and circles around a center island of large live oaks. Nestled into the landscape, the home’s gracious horizontal lines and large front porch welcome the arriv-ing guests. The property follows a gentle slope down towards the lake.

Bungalows are known for their grand sloping front roofs and, often elaborate, decora-tive buttresses. However, these long sloping roofs can create a crushing downpour off the eaves during heavy rains. To avoid marring the look of the home with gutters, Schatz addressed the roof runoff problems as well as drainage issues caused by the slope of the land, by creating deep, dry creek beds that run below the drip line and then lead off to planted drainage areas. Moisture loving irises, purple Taro and other plantings thrive in the area, creating a small microclimate of their own. The deep angles of the roof come together in certain areas forming natural culverts. In these spots metal rain chains chan-nel the water more gently to the drainage streambeds below. “This house is awesome when it rains,” Terry says. “The waterfall off the roof creates a stream and it sounds so beautiful—we have a babbling creek in the yard!”

OPPOSITE CLOCKWISE FROM TOP LEFT: Dry creek beds were created to catch the rainwater flowing from the roof of the home. Metal rain chains help channel rain-water flowing from the roof. Covered areas make it easy to get into the home during storms. The homeowners created a bunga-low-style home along the lake in Northern Hillsborough County. The dry creek bed allows the water to flow down to the lake. ABOVE: Rocks help establish the direction of the dry creek bed.

“There are all sorts of different things going on around the property at different times of year,” Schatz says. Adjacent to the dry creek bed, a large butterfly garden blooms abundantly even in December. Large plantings of Scarlet Milkweed, Scarlet Sage, gold Canna Lilies, Pentas and larval or nectar foods plants abound. “This is the first time I’ve had a butterfly garden,” Terry says. “This spring there were so many butterflies that they would literally run into you! I’m the B&B for but-terflies,” she laughs.

Protecting natureIn keeping with the eco-friendly design of this property, the long plank walkway leading down to the lake is built of recy-cled materials. A small storage and garden shed tucked alongside offers attractive storage for tools and supplies.

OPPOSITE: A picturesque view of the lake is seen from the side of the bungalow. ABOVE: The butterfly garden flourishes with a large col-lection of flowers, including golden canna lilies.

On the other side of the home, a native Coral Bean plant waits for summer when it will burst into bloom attracting bees and hummingbirds. The large grass yard sloping down to the lake was created using a “mixed species turf” which is easy to grow, low maintenance and does not require extra watering. A center island of native long grass and scrub was left as a hiding place for the rabbits that come to nibble. “We knew we wanted a more natural garden. After living in Florida and doing your own garden for 20 years, you realize you want native. And vegetables? Besides lettuce, herbs and arugula…forget it!” Terry exclaims, delighted with the low maintenance aspect of the project.

A spacious flagstone patio with ample seating complements the home’s wide back porch. Much of the existing native trees and vegetation was left in place

creating the impression of a house nestled in a lakefront meadow surrounded by mature trees. Tall cypress trees along the edges of the lake punctuate the serene view. “Creating a peaceful place has been my goal ever since we got the house,” Terry says.

Despite being a newly constructed home, this lovely bungalow, with its nat-ural landscape and mature trees, looks like it has been comfortably settled there for years.

“I love South Tampa but I have always wanted more space,” this former South Tampa resident says of her previous life south of Kennedy Boulevard. Fast-forward many years and now she and her husband are happily enjoying country living in their new lakefront home in Odessa.

At the end of a curving lane, this handsome Italian country home sits on a spacious lake-front lot surrounded by woods and meadows. “For about eight years, we were going to Italy two or three times a year and we got to know a lot of people there. I have always wanted to build an Italian style home but one designed after a coun-try house. We wanted simple, elegant lines; not a villa or a palace, just simple Tuscan lines,” the homeowner says.

An authentic designThe exterior of the home is coated with a thick layer of Archistone, a surfacing prod-uct made of ground stone that was applied to the block walls by Kat Stucco. The beauty of this product is the way it ages over time. On the inside foyer of the home, the walls were treated with the same process then scored to look like large stone blocks. The wife, a for-mer professional faux finish artist, had initially planned to paint the walls herself to achieve this effect but realized that she could get an even bet-ter texture without having to step one foot on scaffolding.

Beautiful reclaimed lumber floors were used in most of the public areas of this home. The 250-year-old salvaged pine planks were milled to size at Robbins Lumber, a family-owned local lumber compa-ny, and installed by Oakleaf Flooring. “We loved the tex-ture of the old wood. were waxed instead of var-nished to maintain their true appearance. The only mainte-nance required is annual wax-ing to keep the protective wax coat.

To achieve the thick walled look of an Italian country home, the structure of the house was built with double thickness concrete blocks. This allowed the windows to be recessed both inside and out creating the wide window-sills typical of older European homes. It also meant the wooden shutters on the house

could be fully operational, designed to close easily into the recessed windows should the need arise to secure the house. George Smith, a retired local architect, designed the home after the homeowners lured him out of retirement. “We begged him to take it on,” she says laughing. “He finally agreed saying it would be his ‘swan song.’” South-Co Construction, owned by fam-ily member Jimmy Watson, built the 5,800-square-foot home.

Lastly, the triple layer, tile

roof was designed after the Italian fashion. Using hand made clay tiles from Columbia, the first layer was put down upside down in a “U” position in a bed of thick mortar mud. The next layer of tiles was laid over that in the standard, inverted U form with thick layers of roofing “mud” ooz-ing out, followed by a third layer in a similar fashion. The end result is roof that it looks like it could have been built by Italian artisans two hun-dred years ago. It took the homeowners a long time to

find a roofing company with the expertise and experience to do this project. Installed by Shields Roofing, this incred-ible roof is the ultimate tribute to Italian design.

Serene interiorsWith two guest bedrooms and adjoining bathrooms on the second level, most of the living in this home happens on the ground floor. The design of the home is only one room’s depth in thickness with angled wings off on either side. This means that nearly every room

in the house has a view of the beautiful pool, lawn and garden area and the sparkling lake beyond. To the right of the foyer, a peaceful sitting room with eclectic furnishings and a grand piano is a favorite place to read and relax. Also part of this wing, the master bedroom, simply painted in a clear sky blue creates a restful, serene space. The master bath, featuring elegant white mar-ble counters, floors, bath and shower against the same clear blue has a spa-like ambiance.

“Michael Meloy was my designer on this house,” the homeowner says. “What really impressed me is that not only did Michael have wonderful

abilities and talent but he was able to make this house really look like my house. It real-ly reflects me.” In addition, Meloy’s expertise shows up in the beautiful antique rugs found throughout the home.

Much of the furniture pieces found in this home are antiques from France and Italy. Other pieces such as the foyer table, the home-owner bought locally and refinished to fit her style. The large dining room table and round kitchen table were cus-

tom built for this home from reclaimed wood by Mike Bell, Inc., a company specializing in custom and reproduction furniture.

Having the appropriate lighting was a vital piece of the design puzzle. For that the homeowner turned to Marilyn Checkver at Biscayne Lighting, a 61-year-old, locally-owned company. “I had worked with Marilyn on my other home and liked her very much,” the homeowner says. “She would have all the selections pulled

for me and she knows exactly what I liked.”

For this home, iron chande-liers by Schoenbek, with hand-cut crystal drops, fit the bill in the foyer, the dining room and the living room. “As artists, we fed off each other so this was a thrilling project for me,” Checkver says.

For the family room, Check-ver found an iron chandelier that was perfect for the wife to weave deer antlers through for a more rustic feel; a loving tribute to her husband who is an avid hunter. Antique olive jars were repurposed into love-ly matching table lamps. The family room, a comfortable room with a large fireplace

Nearly every room in the home offers views of the pool, garden and lake.

that is located off the kitchen, serves as a family gathering place. Hand water col-ored etchings of Florida birds, by favorite local artist John Costin, are prominently displayed in this room and throughout the home.

One of the favorite rooms in the house is the kitchen. Pecan-stained wood cabin-etry sets off the black granite countertops, creatively designed and installed with a flat, scored edge making it appear to be fresh from the quarry. Stone floor tiles laid in a French weave pattern sport rough-cut edges for a natural look. Stainless steel appliances meet every cook’s need—from the large Wolf gas cooktop and oven to the spacious double Sub-Zero refrigerators.

Italian-inspired gardensNo Italian home is complete without gar-dens and this home is no exception. At the front of the house, this homeowner’s love of roses is evidenced by the large circular formal rose garden centering around a splashing cupid fountain. This vast, fra-grant collection is carefully tended by Tim Myers, a graduate in horticulture studies. Blue Wave Irrigation installed all of the specialty irrigation systems used through-out the property. The drip irrigation sys-tem used on the roses helps keep the plants healthy by watering the roots while avoiding water on the foliage. It also helps conserve water by reducing wasted over-spray that evaporates in the summer heat.

Landscape architect Shirley Pearsall designed the formal Italian style land-scape, complete with potted urns and Italian cypress, working closely with Judy McMullen, who helped with the plant material and installation.

From the thick walls and custom roof tiles, to one room deep design of the

home, from the lovely cupid design insets on the high walls to the potted Meyer lemon trees situated around the pool, this home is a testament to these homeowners love of old Italy and their commitment to authenticity in the construction of their

home. However, they may have done such a good job that it will be a while before Italy sees them again. As this homeowner says, “I feel like I’m on vacation all the time. My husband says his only regret is that he can’t ever get me to leave!”

THAI BEEF SALAD WITH A WESTERN TWISTRecipe on next page

Cool CuCumber CuCumber

Salads are traditionally considered one of the first courses during dinner. But a fresh salad can be a great option on a hot evening when you only feel like eating something light and cool. Much more than just lettuce and dressing, these hearty creations are very filling meals all on their own.

deseeded and minced1 tablespoon fish sauce1 tablespoon garlic, finely chopped 1 tablespoon chopped coriander1 teaspoon brown sugar¼ cup cold water2 tablespoons fresh lime juice1 chopped spring onion

Marinate the beef in the soy sauce for an hour or overnight. Boil a pot of salted water and blanch the green beans. After 5 minutes remove beans from heat, drain and place into iced water. Drain again and combine with other salad greens. Combine the ingredients for the dressing, stir well and set aside.

Fry rump steak in a heated pan with oil for 2-4 minutes on each side. Rest for 10-15 minutes and slice thinly. Combine the beef with the greens and dressing. Serve immediately.

GRILLED VEGETABLE SALAD WITH SHIRAZ BALSAMIC VINAIGRETTE1 large Vidalia or sweet yellow onion,

peeled and sliced into rings2 green zucchini, sliced in ½ lengthwise8 large white mushrooms3 sweet peppers (red, yellow, orange) cut

in half, stems and seeds removed1 bunch asparagus, trimmed1 cup crumbled goat’s cheese1 teaspoon chopped fresh rosemary

SZECHUAN BEEF SPINACH SALAD1 pound sirloin steak,

seeded and roughly chopped2 yellow onions, sliced6 cups baby spinach leaves,

cleaned and dried2 tablespoons rice vinegar6 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil¼ teaspoon salt¼ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper½ cup roasted peanuts, chopped

Toss the steak strips with the San-J Szechuan Sauce in a large bowl or reseal-able plastic bag. Marinate for up to 3 hours. Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet or wok over high heat. Add the steak strips and stir-fry for about 5 min-utes, or until no longer red in the middle. Add the red bell peppers and onions and stir-fry for another 2 minutes.

Spread the spinach evenly among 6 individual salad plates. Remove the meat and vegetables from heat and, while still hot, place evenly over the spinach. Whisk together the rice vinegar, olive oil, salt and pepper and drizzle over each salad. Garnish the salads with chopped peanuts.

Red Wine Balsamic Vinaigrette:1 cup olive oil ¼ cup Lindemans® Bin 50 Shiraz¼ cup balsamic vinegar2 tablespoons Dijon mustard1 tablespoon chopped fresh rosemarySalt and ground black pepper to taste

First, prepare the vinaigrette by whisking together all ingredients. In a large bowl or sealable container, combine all vegetables together. Add ½ of the vinaigrette to con-tainer, seal and refrigerate for one hour, turning occasionally to marinate evenly. Reserve remaining ½ of vinaigrette to toss with vegetables after grilling.

Preheat grill to medium-high heat. Remove vegetables from marinade and arrange in a grill basket. Place basket onto grill and cook vegetables, turning basket and basting occasionally with marinade, until lightly charred and tender, about 6-8 minutes per side. Remove basket from grill and allow to cool slightly. Remove vegetables and cut into large chunks. Place vegetables into a large bowl, toss with reserved Red Wine Balsamic Vinaigrette, season with salt and coarsely ground black pepper to taste. Arrange onto serving plat-ter and top with crumbled goat’s cheese and chopped fresh rosemary.

FriendlyFormalityA contemporary kitchen for every situation

By Lyla Haggard | Photos by Jason Henthorne

“ Just open her refrigerator—no matter when—

and it’s always full of fabulous food,” raves interior designer

Diane Carter Simon of long-time friend and client Toni

Lewis’ flair for the culinary arts. So when Toni and husband,

Andy, purchased a 1959 South Tampa house on a double

lot and began the two-year renovation project to convert it

into an expanded contemporary residence, it was a given

that the kitchen had to be as special as the food that would

be prepared there.

kitchen trends A bronze Corbett light fixture accents the quaint breakfast table in the kitchen. OPENING SPREAD LEFT TO RIGHT: The kitchen successfully combines dark chocolate-stained wenge and light natural beech cabinetry. The appliances, including the large side-by-side Sub-Zero refrigerator, seamlessly blend into the surrounding cabinetry. The two-tiered perimeter island offers bar seating and allows the cook to be the center of attention when entertaining large groups.

An eclectic recipeSince the overall décor of the home is an eclectic mix of contemporary-style clean lines and stacked slate walls with Tuscan arches and wood columns, Toni and Carter Simon both agreed that the kitchen—the heart of most homes—had to be unique. “I wanted the kitchen to be very contemporary—all straight edges and clean lines—and functional,” says Toni. “I love to cook, especially Italian and Spanish cuisine, and my husband loves to eat,” she laughs. “Plus we have a very large family when they all come over for dinner together.” That meant that the layout of this important workspace had to be perfect.

A family friend recommended George Gobes of Park Avenue Designs for the design and installation. In a renovation, there are usually challenges when align-ing appliances and cabinetry with exist-ing ductwork, plumbing and electrical. Gobes is known for his expertise not only in developing efficient work patterns and designing beautiful custom cabin-etry, but—just as importantly—for work-ing closely with builders and contractors to assure that detailed auto-CAD plans specify exactly where each appliance, sink,

light fixture and cabinet needs to be prior to installation. Toni was able to specify certain things she wanted, especially two work islands to accommodate several cooks at the same time when preparing those family get-togethers. “So I said to George, ‘Here’s what we want, now you make it work,’” says Carter Simon. “I knew he would, and he did.”

This kitchen makes a dramatic state-ment by use of sharp contrasts, often a key element in contemporary design. The juxtaposition of dark and light materials

creates a well-rounded design. Between the rich chocolate-stained wenge alternat-ing with the soft blond of natural beech, to the mix of dark brown and eggshell Caesarstone countertops, the entire space offers visual interest. Carter Simon is also quick to point out the wrap-around coun-tertops that continue down to the floor on both ends of the island. “This is a hot new trend that is just entering the Tampa market,” she adds.

A wide variety of materials ranging from the bronze of the Corbett light fixture over

kitchen trends

the dinette set to the Swarovski crystals of the three Schonbek pendant lights over the bar counter create an atmosphere that fits any type of situation—casual or for-mal or in-between. During the day, light from outside reflecting on the creamy, off-white limestone floor gives a sense of airy spaciousness. In the evening, recessed lighting from the dropped ceilings over the islands and dining area provide both focused light for food preparation yet an overall feel of glowing intimacy.

Modern conveniencesAppliances are a major part of any kitch-en re-design. For the Lewis kitchen, the appliances were purchased first with the cabinetry (Superior Wood Products) sub-sequently custom-fitted around them for a fully integrated appearance. In order to accommodate Toni’s hope for a European contemporary look, appliances such as the side-by-side Sub-Zero refrigerator and two GE Monogram convection ovens, blend into the surrounding cabinetry. Gobes utilized a full overlay inset so that the refrigerator is perfectly flush with the cabinetry. Smaller items such as the mixer and food processors are hidden from sight in counter level garages with power out-lets inside, while knives and spices are in soft-close drawers. On the back wall is a six-burner gas Thermador Professional cooktop with pot-filler against a back-splash of random pencil tile in blues, grays and earth tones. Above is an impressive stainless steel hood.

The white quartz-topped island offers plenty of storage space and houses two Fisher & Paykel DishDrawers and a Wolf microwave. The double-tiered perimeter island holds a third dish drawer, an ice-maker and a small bar sink.

Toni has only good things to say about her new kitchen: “I wouldn’t change any-thing. Everything is exactly where it needs to be,” she says. “I had a blast during the renovations and I have a blast cooking in the kitchen now.”
