Stop Hunger Now Southern Africa (SHN SA) and Cotlands - two non-profit organizations with a similar vision of improving the lives of young children in under-resourced areas - have initiated a pilot project that sees them joining forces to provide both the early learning programmes offered by Cotlands, and the nutritious food packed and supplied by SHN SA to learners.Cotlands engages with their ECDs twice a week. The project will see SHN SA providing a meal pack (or six meal-servings) to learners on the second visitation each week. This meal pack offers nutritious food for the days the learners are not taking part in the Cotlands toy libraries.
The project originators, Jackie Schoeman (CEO: Cotlands) and Barry Mey (CEO:SHN SA) envisage the impact on the learners to be threefold – improved nutrition, parental motivation to ensure that children attend both days to benefit from the meal pack and increased development of the fundamental skills children need in order to integrate into formal schooling. This project will run for a period of six months, with approximately 2 500 children attending both weekly sessions and receiving a meal pack. The impact will be monitored, with attendance, weight and height records, as well as baseline and summative assessments to determine what the learners have gained from their attendance.
The Papillon Foundation and the Santa Shoe Box organization have again partnered this year to bring Christmas love and joy to little ones facing a bleak Christmas.Papillon supports two day-care centres with about 85 little children each in Rosettenville, as well as a special needs centre in Linmeyer with 25 children. Twenty-six local children in Rosettenville and 250 orphans in Carletonville and Orange Farm also benefit from this exciting charity project. The Papillon board, management and staff thank Santa Shoe Boxes for their assistance in bringing joy to these little ones, and their prayers are with each of the donors to this worthy cause.
CHECKLIST: Stephen Smith and Landry Komba (Papillon) sort gifts.
I have to say this is not the type of front page story I wanted for the last edition of 2014 - a deceased newborn baby found on the highway (pg1). However, this is the sick reality we live with.I can not fathom how a woman can carry a baby inside of her for 9 months and then strangle her own flesh and blood, and dump the tiny little body like a piece of rubbish. I believe as a community we need to bring awareness and educate these mothers that if they do not want their babies, there are homes which will take in their babies (pg 3) and give them a second chance at life. That little boy wasn’t even given a chance. I am not a mother yet but I must say last Wednesday’s scene was very upsetting and disturbing. I left that scene praying - praying for the little boy, praying for the mother - just praying to God! He still reigns!!On a lighter note I would just like to thank all the readers, advertisers and contributors to tame TIMES JHB South. Thank you for sup-porting the team and making the newspaper what it is today.I would personally like to thank the spokes-women of Mondeor (Cst Mnguni), Booysens (W/O Van Emmerick) and Moffatview (Cst Bila) SAPS, as our working relationships have proved to be a real joy in my career.I would also like to take this time to thank the tame TIMES production and sales team for making the paper look as awesome as it does and for helping make my vision come to life.I wish all families travelling to their holi-day destinations safe trips and everyone a Merry Christmas, celebrating the birth of our Saviour Jesus Christ, and cherishing the time you have with your families.I wish you a Happy New Year and the most amazing 2015!!
Be safe, God Bless and keep smiling! X x x

CITY DEEP ESTATE: is on the corner of Heidelberg and Majorie Roads, City Deep.
In the space of ten years, Johannesburg Social Housing Company (JOSHCO), a City of Johannesburg owned entity, has invested more than R1,8 billion towards making Joburg a more liveable city, by providing more than 7 000 homes and refurbishing or constructing 8 749 units. They also have an ambitious plan to increase the number of units to more than 13 600 by the end of June 2017.JOSHCO offers affordable and secure rentals for citizens who earn between R3 500 and R7 500 per month. Those in this income bracket do not qualify for RDP homes, nor do they qualify for bonds. One of JOSHCO’s flagship projects is City Deep where they have converted a hostel and developed new rental units. The development of the City Deep Social Housing Project has been done in phases and is due for completion in the first quarter of 2015. It has already won the South African Housing Foundation award for Best Social Housing Project in 2014. The segregated dormitories have been transformed into a contemporary space for families. The units are aimed at residents of Johannesburg Inner City and Region F with rentals of R750 to R2000.In transforming the space, all the newer units have balconies. The units have been designed so that people spend most of their time in the living areas which are on the
northern side, which offers more warmth and light. Safety has also been carefully considered with guard houses and access control.Rory Gallocher CEO of JOSHCO explained: “One of the factors that threatened social housing was non-payment of rentals from tenants. Our tenants can expect delivery of services, while we expect tenants to pay rent on time every month and to respect the buildings and the rights of other tenants. The collection rate up to the end of the last audited financial year was 88%, up from 46% in 2006. JOSHCO is progressively improving this in order to achieve an average of 97%. “Education is a large part of what we do,” Gallocher continued, “Often our tenants are first-time renters so the rights and obligations of a responsible tenant need to be communicated. This is done through workshops that JOSHCO’s tenants are obliged to attend before signing a lease agreement.”JOSHCO’s primary objective is to transform the lives of their tenants by providing quality, affordable, safe and clean accommodation that is sustainable, inclusive and energy efficient. It further contributes through its repossession and refurbishment of "bad buildings" in the city. Building energy
efficient communities will be actualised in the retrofitting of JOSHCO developments with energy efficient technology such as solar geysers, smart meters and JOJO tanks. The City of Johannesburg Executive Mayor Cllr Parks Tau said, “JOSHCO has transformed these monuments of South Africa’s historic inequalities into sustainable thriving spaces for communities to live in. The City Deep Social Housing Project is a demonstration of the City’s commitment to redress historic spatial inequalities, through, among other things, the rehabilitation of mining land in line with our Corridors of
Freedom programme. This programme seeks to realize our spatial vision of well-planned transport arteries that are linked to interchanges where mixed-use development, high density accommodation - supported by office buildings, retail development and opportunities for leisure and recreation - exist.” Mayor Tau added, “The City of Johannesburg is a city at work to secure a future where its citizens, instead of driving cars to move around, opt for cycling or walking in designated lanes that are currently being rolled out in the City.”

The names of Grade 12 learners who pass Matric will not be published in the newspapers when the Matric results are released. This was revealed at the final Council of Education Ministers (CEM) meeting, which was held in Pretoria last week.“The Ministers resolved that the results for this year would still be published in newspapers … but will only reflect the learners’ ID and exam numbers,” Department of Basic Education spokesperson Elijah Mhlanga said. The CEM, which discusses critical matters affecting the education sector, comprises Minister Angie Motshekga, Deputy Minister Enver Surty and all provincial MECs. Mhlanga said the CEM had taken the decision to review the publishing of individual Grade 12 learners’ results following the recommendation of a task team. The meeting also discussed the implementation of recommendations contained in the National Senior Certificate (NSC) Ministerial Task Team report.“CEM agreed that raising the pass mark for the NSC must be considered as part of improving the quality of education in South Africa. It was agreed that this should be done incrementally,” Mhlanga said.He said the integrated National Strategy for Learner Attainment Framework (NSLA) had been revised for General Education and Training (GET) and Further Education and Trading (FET) for 2015 in a bid to
improve learner outcomes and enhance accountability measures at all levels of the system. It was also done to ensure greater focus on the basic functionality of schools, protecting time for teaching and learning and improving support for teaching and learning. The NSLA is a comprehensive strategy to co-ordinate provincial improvement plans and steer them towards the optimal performance of all learners. The focus area for the 2015 academic year will be the education of learners with special needs, education in schools with multi grades, tracking learner performance quarterly, the impact of ICT and the impact of extra classes.Other focus areas included the impact of support by subject advisors, the impact of language interventions and the impact of teacher development and learner performance.
SIGN LANGUAGEThe Department of Basic Education has also completed the development of the SA Sign Language and it has been gazetted as policy.“Training of teachers is underway… Provinces will prepare schools for implementation. An implementation plan has been provided to provinces,” Mhlanga said.He said a report stating that Sign Language would be implemented in Foundation Phase and Grade 9 was submitted at the meeting.

At the residents’ meeting regarding the construction of the new school, Tamano Primary, they decided to get an interdict against the development and go to court due to the fact that there was no public participation. A petition has also been circulated for residents who are against the school to sign.Clr Paul Smit received answers to the questions he submitted to the Provincial Legislature. The MEC of Education, Panyaza Lesufi, stated, “The Department is experiencing tremendous pressure for admissions to secondary schools in this area for January 2015. The existing schools in the area cannot accommodate these learners
that require accommodation for January 2015. Due to the time factor it is not possible to construct a brick and mortar school at this stage. The Department has therefore taken a decision to construct an alternative construction technology school building. This will be a permanent structure, which will enable the Department to meet the demand for space within the shortest possible time period so that the learners can be placed in a school as soon as possible.”It was said the school will have 30 classrooms and a sports field and that the catchment area of this school consists of Glenvista, Mulbarton, Glenanda, Bassonia, Suideroord and part of Mondeor.

SATIRE IN DIE SUBURBS
VRUGTEKOEK, EN ANDER TRADISIONELE WAPENS
Volg Stefan op Twitter! @Stefan609Jy weet dis weer daardie tyd van die jaar as jy by die supermark instap en Boney-M sing een of ander kersliedjie en die winkel is in helder groen en rooi getooi. Sekere kersfees-gebruike kan maar bly.Soos Boney-M.
Residents may be unaware of the increasing number of illegal evictions that tenants are being subject to in our suburbs. One might be under the impression that this only happens in certain suburbs like La Rochelle and Rosettenville. However, these evictions are not restricted to the suburbs already mentioned - they happen also in others such as Linmeyer and Glenvista. There are very few suburbs where illegal evictions do not happen, although some suburbs are targeted more than others. How does it happen, you may ask? A person or a number of people arrive and claim they are the new owners and, as such, have arrived to evict the tenants. Often it is claimed that notices had been posted and the notice period has expired, so the occupants must move out - or, the evictors claim to have been appointed by the owner to attend to the eviction. A variation may
be: “I/we are the new owners and will be collecting your rent in future. (When this happens no receipts are issued).”Another ploy used is that the tenants are told to vacate the house as renovations are apparently due to take place with immediate effect. In fact, the only person who can legally evict anyone is the Sheriff of the Court. This can only happen if he has been instructed to and has in his possession an eviction order issued by a Magistrate or a Judge. Obtaining an eviction order can cost the owner anything from R10 000 to R20 000. Impostors, however, seek to avoid these legal costs using one of the ploys mentioned above. Remember, only a sheriff can evict. If you suspect foul play, contact your local councillor, CPF &/or SCF and SAPS. For more information contact Cllr Dennis Jane on 083 701 8856 or email [email protected]

Clr Dennis Jane writes:
I was a victim of an attempted mugging at Pick ‘n Pay The Glen Shopping Centre on 30 November at 15:30.As I reached up to remove an item from one of the shelves, a woman bumped me, but as I turned around she had already opened my bag and removed my cellphone. I immediately reacted by grabbing her.She still had the cell in her hand. I hit the cell out of her hand and stepped on it. I then struck her with a fist and grabbed her by the arm - all this time I was screaming at the top of my voice for someone to help, but to no avail. Eventually a security guard came up to me and said he could not help me as he does
not work for the store. I am pregnant and was afraid that the lady was going to fight back. I could no longer hold on to her, so she got away. It is sad to say that a South African cannot assist in a time of need - there were other customers who saw the ordeal but not one assisted in holding down the perpetrator. I called my Mum who was shopping in a different aisle. She ran to security at the door and asked for assistance and to speak to the Store Manager who still did not bother to come and see me.tame TIMES has sent the letter to the Store Manager at Pick ‘n Pay The Glen and is still waiting for a response.

Oe julle!
TIP: remember the reason for the season.

The fi rst annual Alberton Day and Music Festival was a massive success. This past weekend marked three days of some of the best in the local music industry, along with many stalls and other entertainment.Thousands of people braved the moody weather and gathered at the A Square Forklift Alberton Rugby Club. Not even the rain could stop the party, which continued in one of the beer tents on
Saturday night.Everything from rain to loadshedding was thought of in advance, so the entertainment never had to stop; and Diligence Security did a fantastic job of keeping festival-goers and celebrities safe at all times. The Johannesburg Skydiving Club showed the crowd what can be done with an impressive jump on Saturday and Sunday. Wrestling fanatics had matches to keep them entertained
as well. The dates for the next Alberton Day and Music Festival have been announced, so keep your diaries open for 4-6 December 2015.

The Tsogo Sun Arts Academy grand finale School Awards Showcase was held at Gold Reef City’s Lyric Theatre recently. It featured the top young stars of the programme, giving the children the opportunity to show off their hard work during the year and be rewarded. The Arts Academy programme is closing its third year with 480 children across 12 underprivileged schools, 40 in each school, in Diepsloot and Mayfair. In this past year the programme has introduced exciting new experiences into the youngsters’ lives – they were taken to see War Horse and the Sound of Music, and the facilitators were taken to Cirque Eloize iD – which was particularly valuable for them as they all have dancing backgrounds. The children were also given the opportunity to perform at the Tshwane Youth Festival, where they came second overall. As a first-time entrant, this was a remarkable achievement, but also exposed the children to new e x p e r i e n c e s that they would o t h e r w i s e never have had, such as staying in a hotel, broadening their horizons and perspect ives on the world around them. The full-year
Arts Academy curriculum is designed as an all-encompassing programme that uses the arts as the foundation for opportunities for growth and learning for the children in both primary and high schools. It covers the basics of drama, dance, vocal training and voice projection, as well as carefully structured lifeskills courses that empower the youngsters to make sound choices throughout their lives. The Schools Awards Showcase followed two community concerts – one in Mayfair and one in Diepsloot – where respected industry professionals adjudicated and the top performers were selected to go on to perform at the final concert at the Lyric Theatre.

The R2 million Gauteng SANSUI Summer Cup day-night meeting at Turffontein Racecourse boasted every element horseracing fans and Joburg socialites could wish for in a perfect day out: 12 staggering thoroughbred races, 11 car giveaways, two hugely exciting specialty races, a plethora of celebrities, thousands of glamorous hat-wearing race-goers and one overall perfect day of enjoyment for all. After a thrilling finish to what was a memorable race, the Geoff Woodruff-trained Louis The King, ridden by Pierre “Striker” Strydom, crossed the line first in this year’s Gauteng SANSUI Summer Cup feature race. The victors make a formidable trio: Louis the King became the first horse to win the Triple Crown this century earlier this year; Strydom is a six-times champion jockey who became the first rider in South African history to record 5000 career wins last weekend; and Woodruff is a five-times champion trainer, who had the first three past the line in last year’s Summer Cup and the first two this year.
Louis The King showed the courage that is a hallmark of all great champions, finding extra power when it counted and passing his stable-mate Killua Castle, who had hit the front at the 300m mark. The Tyrone Zackey-trained Judicial ran well for third place. Twenty of SA’s hottest celebrities took to the race track in their sporty kit with charitable competitiveness for the Racing. It’s a Rush Celebrity Charity Dash. The winning celebrity, Stacey Holland, had the honour of handing over a whopping R475 000 to this year’s charity partner SOS Children’s Villages. Movember SA was also a charity partner this year, supported by the “Mo-Kini Sprint,” which for some ladies was the highlight of the evening as it saw a handful of SA’s hottest men swap their kit for “mankinis” to complete a cheeky 200m dash to raise awareness for testicular cancer. The Charity partners were not the only fortunate few this year to walk away with something from race day. Eleven cars were given away during race day, to add excitement to the rush of the races and the glam of the fashion shows and live entertainment.
