Partiamo da Paola, fotografa, ha 25 anni, è tarantina, vive e lavora a Firenze. Rappresenta

un esempio lampante di come si possa essere giovani e dotati . In quella “e” che unisce le

due parole sta molto di ciò in cui crediamo. In frasi simil i troverete altrove spesso un “ma”.

Come se per primo il pubblico andasse rassicurato del fatto che qualcuno possa essere in

gamba già a vent'anni.

Da nessuna delle singole foto esposte in questa mostra emerge direttamente la causa del

dolore diffuso che di fatto la permea. È però chiaro dal risultato finale quale ne sia l 'origine.

Viene in aiuto la metafora del gial lo in cui le singole pagine connotano, ma non svelano,

tranne l 'ultima, i l colpevole.

L'idea per i l titolo mi è venuta dal l ibro del 1 959 di Günter Grass: I l tamburo di latta. Non è

solo una semplice assonanza giocata sul nome del quartiere di Taranto Tamburi e sul la

ricca produzione di derivati di acciaio del la città. Come Oskar, i l protagonista del l ibro,

indirettamente è responsabile del la fine di alcuni dei più profondi tra i suoi legami, così

avviene in questa moderna storia ital iana. I l paral lelo tra i due titol i si spinge oltre: Oskar

decide di seppell ire i l proprio Tamburo quando raggiunge un equil ibrio, quando lo

circondano solo persone che ama e lo amano. Lo fa per dimenticare, per non ferire più, ma

lo fa anche per ricominciare a crescere.

È fondamentale i l fatto che seppell isca il tamburo e non le persone che ha ucciso. Nel

decidere di superare il passato deve eliminare la causa che lo lega a quei crimini, che gli

impedisce di andare avanti.

Nel l 'al lestimento si fondono armonicamente l 'audio tratto dalle interviste (raccolte da Paola

stessa), spezzoni dai cortei, e le foto. Queste ultime si dividono in due fi loni: quel le che

rappresentano volti di una espressività disarmante e indirettamente accusatoria e quelle più

architettonico industrial i , ugualmente efficaci nel mostrare cicatrici profonde. Si esce

arrabbiati e con un senso di latente disagio da questa mostra. Mi auguro si trasformi nel

desiderio concreto di fare qualcosa per seppell ire i l tamburo.

Let's start from Paola, a 25 years old photographer from Taranto who lives and works in

Florence: she represents a perfect example of how it could happen to be young and

talented at the same time. In that "and" l ies much of what we believe in. In similar

sentences, it is frequently substituted by the word "but", as if the recipients first should be

reassured about the concrete possibi l ity for a twentysomething to be gifted.

The displayed photos give us a very few hints about the reason of the ubiquitous sorrow we

can feel in every shot; nevertheles, the project in its entirety shows clearly what is its origin.

I t can be compared to a detective story, in which single pages characterize, but don't reveal,

except for the last one, the guilty.

The original idea for the exhibition title comes from the Günter Grass 1 959 novel "The tin

drum". I t is not a simple connection between the name of Taranto's depicted district,

Tamburi ("drums") and the huge steel industry settled on the town. Oskar, Grass' book

protagonist, is indirectly responsible of the end of some of his most deep relationships; the

same happens in this contempory I tal ian story. The link between the exhibition title and the

book go even farer: Oskar decides to bury his tin drum when he reach his mental balance

and is surrounded only by people who love him. He bury the drum so that he could forget

the past and never hurt people again, but also to final ly grow up.

I t is fundamental for him to bury the drum and not the people he kil led: he can go over his

past only by eliminating the primary l ink to that crimes. The exhibition melts photos with

Paola's audio interviews to Taranto people and field recordings from citizens

demonstrations. The photos can be divided in two parts: from one side the Taranto people

portraits, with their accusingly and disarmingly expressiveness; from the other side, the

industrial and architectonic landscapes, so effective in showing how the town was so deeply

hurted by an invasive and polluting industry. This exhibition makes us feel angry and

uncomfortable; I hope that these feelings wil l transform themselves in the concrete desire to

bury the drum.

Pugliese, è nata a Taranto nel 1 989. Dal 2007 vive a Firenze. Dopo il diploma, decide

di frequentare il DAMS presso la Facoltà di Arte di Firenze, dove si laurea nel 2011 .

Frequenta la scuola di fotografia presso la Fondazione Studio Marangoni. Da quel

momento si occupa principalmente della sua grande passione: la fotografia. Ritrarre

le persone le permette di svi luppare una consapevolezza diversa del mondo e di ciò

che resta confinato negli angoli più reconditi del la città, mostrando gli aspetti del la

vita di ogni giorno che spesso rimangono latenti .

Paola was born in Taranto, I taly, on 1 989. She lives in Florence since 2007. After the

high school, she attended the DAMS at the University of Florence Art Department,

where she graduated in 2011 . She attended the photography school at Fondazione

Studio Marangoni and graduated in 201 4. Photography is her great passion. Through

her portraits, she aims to develop a different consciousness of the world and of what

is hidden on the most secret part of the town, showing some of the most latent aspect

of everyday life.
