BEST-SELLING children’s authorSarah Brennan, will be celebrating
Chinese New Year with her firstinternational launch at The Secret GardenBookstore on Sunday.
Her latest work is The Tale of SybilSnake which is illustrated by English-bornHong Kong-based artist Harry Harrison.
There will be a funny and fabulous storyreading and book signing, followed byquiz, games, colouring pages and Chineseprizes for kids from four to 12 years.
Sarah, a graduate of QueenslandUniversity and daughter of TamborineMountain residents John and HelenBrennan, will be visiting from Hong Kongafter recording a special Chinese New Yearprogram with ABC 4 Kids in Melbourne.
The program is set to air on the weekendof 9 and 10 February and will feature allseven of her best-selling Chinese CalendarTales to date. On her last visit to themountain, Sarah drew a packed house tothe North Tamborine Library.
She describes her latest character, SybilSnake, as beautiful, slender and extremelycharming. But all is not as it seems in theEmperor’s garden, and Sybil is more of anenchantress than meets the eye. Her taleof mystery, missing treasure and theextraordinary magic of love highlights
some fabulous Chinese history, includingthe story of China’s only female EmperorWu Zetian and the much-loved Chineselegend of Lady White Snake.
“I’m thrilled to be launching The Tale ofSybil Snake in Australia at The SecretGarden.” says Sarah. “I’m a hugeMountain fan and can’t wait to introducemy gorgeously wicked snake to theMountain kids and parents. I think they’regoing to love her and the fascinatingChinese history behind her story.”
Sarah worked as a lawyer in Brisbaneand London for many years. After herhusband was posted to Hong Kong, shefinally followed her childhood dreams, becoming one of Hong Kong’s best-lovedchildren’s authors. Her books are nowdistributed in Asia, the UK, the UnitedStates, Canada and, since July, Australia. She began writing The Chinese CalendarTales to fill a gap in the children’s bookmarket:
“With the spotlight of the world now onChina, it’s increasingly important thatchildren have the opportunity to learnabout Chinese history and culture in afunny and accessible way,” she says
Sarah will launch The Tale of SybilSnake on Sunday 20 January at 3pm atMarks & Gardner Gallery, Secret Garden,69 Main Western Road, North Tamborine.

Some work for Tom
IN April it will have been a year sincethe local government elections but this
clearly forgotten, graffiti- splatteredimage of Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate isstill smiling at long-suffering passers-byfrom a pole in Cedar Creek.
Tate campaigned on a slogan of“getting the Gold Coast working again”but it appears his campaign team needs agentle reminder that they have someunfinished work to do.
How about it Tom?On second thoughts, he could always
make a donation to the Logan Villageladies soccer club to remove it.

Afamily reunion that was decades in themaking was a wonderful start to the
New Year for local resident Mary Edwards.Mary, her three half sisters and the wife
of her half brother were reunited at theCreative Arts Centre where members oftheir wider family had the opportunity tomeet Mary, 82, for the first time.
Mary was a year old when she wasplaced in a Catholic orphanage in Brisbane,by her 21-year-old unmarried mother, where she spent the next 20 years.
“I have nothing bad to say about theorphanage – they were all very good to
me,” she said.Mary saw her mother’s funeral notice in
a newspaper 22 years ago but decided notto attend for fear of upsetting the family.
However, in 2012 her daughter, HelenBeelaerts, asked Mary whether she wouldlike to meet her mother’s other childrenand within a few days had tracked downand contacted them.
Two weeks later, Mary met her three halfsisters and learned that she had a halfbrother, Alan Curtis, who had passed away.
“It was such an exciting day when we allmet in June 2012,” said Mary.

Afundraising project by the TamborineVillage Lions made Christmas even
more special for 10-year-old Callum Huthand his family of Riemore Downs.
Callum is like most boys of his age, butbecause he has cerebral palsy cannot ride abike or scooter.
The gift of a specially built trike, madepossible by the Lions, has been life-changing for Callum and his brothers,Jackson, 12, who is autistic, and Kye, 6.
The boys’ father, Roy Huth, said the trikewas an early and wonderfulChristmas present, not only forCallum but also the whole family.
Kye enjoys being a passenger onthe trike and riding it has boostedJackson’s confidence.
But for Callum, who has madegreat progress, following a raft ofoperations including spinal surgery, the trike has given him the joy offorward momentum and providedmuch-needed physical exercise.
The trike means he is not heldback by his problems with balancethat prevent him from riding a bikeor scooter and, wearing specialshoes to alleviate the spasticity inhis legs, Callum is able toconfidently ride the trike.
Proceeds from the Lions’ marketfundraisers and donations from
locals and businesses, including solarenergy company Beat Bad Energy whichcontributed $500, helped raise the $1500for the trike.
“It’s wonderful to think that Lions andBeat Bad Energy have provided suchgenerous and practical help without beingasked,” said Mr Huth.
“As a family, we appreciate theirkindness very much.” Below: Callum Huth gives younger brotherKye a ride on his new trike.

I trust everybody had a happy and safeChristmas period and started the New
Year safely. Unfortunately this will not bethe case for everybody. For a variety ofreasons people will have suffered someform of grief and/or sadness. They mayhave lost loved ones, been victims of crimeor traffic trauma – some may live on themountain, even be your neighbours. Iguess my point is to be mindful of yourneighbours, show some empathy andcompassion to others, and make an effortin the New Year to be a bit more forgivingand gracious to others.
From a local police perspective Iwouldn’t say it has been quiet over theperiod, but nor has it been ridiculouslybusy. Of biggest concern is our continuingproblem with local motorists breaking theroad rules. There is an ever-increasingemphasis from management to address theState-wide ‘road trauma’ issues that placeenormous strain on families, communitiesand the health system. As a result, therehave been more police patrols andsubsequent large amount of motorists beingbooked for speeding, particularly onMacdonnell Road and Tamborine-Oxenford Road. There can be NOargument if you are caught speeding –with a significant number of accidents, some of them fatal, the 60km section ofroad has been set for a good reason. BOOMERANG ROAD HIT
There have been a few areas subjected tocriminal activity, particularly inBoomerang Road, Tamborine. The semi-rural properties in this area have beentargeted while people were away or hadleft for work. Thieves appear to betargeting tools, vehicles and dirtmotorbikes. Please keep an eye out foryou neighbours and the people who live inyour street. There have been some arrestsmade for a couple of recent offencesbecause of information supplied. Recently,a male offender targeted a property whenhe believed theowner had left forwork. The offenderparked his vehicleat the front door ofthe property andforced entry, onlyto be disturbed bythe owner who hadforgottensomething andreturned home. The startledoffender only justmanaged to escape. He was last seendriving a slightlydamaged silver
Jeep Cherokee. There was also a break andenter of the North Tamborine Newsagencyafter it recently moved to the new shoppingcentre location. Any information regardingsuspects or their vehicles will bewelcomed. GREAT WORK AT HENRI ROBERTACCIDENT
I would like to praise our localemergency services – the Ambos and Firies– who responded so magnificently andprofessionally to the recent bus crash onHenri Robert Drive. I should also includeour own Senior Constable BrendanEdwards who was the first on scene afterthe accident. Tamborine Mountain is aunique community for a variety of reasons, spectacular scenery, magnificent flora andfauna and a sensational climate. The areahas a strong community spirit and by andlarge is populated with honest hard-working people, and there is a history ofgood will and sensitivity to others. Let’skeep it that way, stay true to yourcommunity, and look after every aspect ofthis magnificent place. You don’t have totolerate anti-social behaviour, “hoons” orcriminals. Report them to your local policeand/or crimestoppers. A couple of calls oflate have resulted in some “hoons” beingissued tickets, the driver of a tourist busfrom off the mountain being fined, and acouple of undesirables being moved on.FAREWELL TO A GREAT MATE
On a personal note, the mountain lostanother good bloke recently in BarryOsmond. Barry was a very loyal and wellrespected man and this was enforced by thelarge attendance at his funeral service.Barry will be sadly missed by the boys uphere, not just for his great tips on thehorses and magnificent vanilla slices, hewas a gentleman who could tell a greatyarn, and enjoyed a beer with his friends.Mate, we will miss you.
Keep safe, take it easy out there, be niceto your family and mindful of others.

TAMBORINE MOUNTAIN NEWS VOL. 1344, 15 JANUARY, 2013 – 7
SINCE time immemorialthere have been
predictions of Doomsday. Now with instant globalcommunication theseprophecies attractinternational attention andhave even created an end ofthe world industry selling tripsto safe havens, bunkers, waterpurifiers and emergencysupplies.
Apparently many end of theworld events were scheduled for 2012. Themost popular being on 21 December, inspiredby a misinterpretation of the end of a Mayancalendar cycle. Many cataclysmic scenariosinvolve cosmic accidents such as collisionswith rogue planets, wayward comets, reversesof Earth’s rotation, polar shifts and othermanifestations of cosmophobia – an irrationalfear of the cosmos. Yet it is a reminder that alllife on Earth is totally dependent upon thepredictability of our planet’s motion in relationto the universe, because this determines day, night, tides, seasons, weather, atmosphere, climate, currents, cycles etc.
All the planets in the Solar System orbitaround the Sun in an easterly direction, it takesthe Earth 365.25 days to complete its rotationaround the Sun. The Earth rotates in aneasterly direction on its own axis, in 24 hoursit rotates a full circle (360 degrees).
The Earth’s axis is tilted at an angle of 23.5degrees, and it is the change in orientation ofthe tilt in relation to the Sun that causes theseasons by changing the angle of impact of theSun’s rays to spread or concentrate their heat. When the top half of the Earth tilts towards theSun it is Northern Hemisphere summer/Southern Hemisphere winter, when the lower
half of the Earth tilts towardsthe Sun it is NorthernHemisphere winter/SouthernHemisphere summer;autumn and spring aretransitional seasons.
Position in relation to theSun also determines thechange in the length of day(LOD) which for a givenday, at a given location, isdetermined by the time ofyear and the latitude of the
location. On the equator there is very littlechange in position so LOD is an almostconstant 12 hours. At the poles there is onlyone sunrise and sunset per year and theseoccur about the time of solstice.
The Earth’s rotation on a north-south axiscreates the rotating dynamics which drivecurrents, wind, weather through the CoriolisEffect, which causes particles to move slightlyto the right in the Northern Hemisphere, andslightly to the left in the Southern Hemisphere.
The Earth’s tides are caused by thegravitational pull of the Moon and the Suncombined with the centrifugal force of theEarth’s rotation. The Moon’s gravitationalforce pulls the ocean towards it, so the oceansfacing the Moon develop a bulge. At the sametime at the opposite side of the Earth thecentrifugal force pulls water in the oppositedirection and forms another bulge of water. These bulges are high tides, and areas whichlose water to the bulges experience low tides.
Although the dynamics of the Solar Systemdo change over millions of years for ourpurposes we can consider them stable – butwhat about collisions with meteors, cometsand asteroids? More next time.

TRAVELLINGPLACESwith Gina
I need to warn you that travelling with Tauck isaddictive. In October I joined a Tauck group in Californiaand thoroughly enjoyed my week being spoiled. Severalof my fellow travellers had been on many Tauck trips andI can understand why – these journeys are excellentquality and the attention to detail in planning each trip isextraordinary.
The tour leaders are the best in the business in guidingand ensuring that the trip runs without a hitch; thestandard of hotels is great often reflecting the flavour ofthe area that you are travelling through; all sightseeing isincluded so there are no hidden optional extras; virtuallyall meals are included (these are not set menus butrather select anything from the menu and charge it up toTauck) and all porterage is pre paid. It is the unexpectedinclusions that really make Tauck stand apart – they willarrange for guest speakers or visits to places that yousimply could not enjoy if you were travellingindependently.
Tauck is an American company that has beenoperating tours since 1925 and they have grown to offera stand out product range. Worldwide options includeEurope, North America, Central and South America,Africa, Asia and even Australia and New Zealand. Withour strong Australian dollar these excellent tours nowrepresent great value.
Exclusive for Australian guests only, Tauck are offeringyou the opportunity to spend “Time on Tauck” receivingtwo free hotel nights to be enjoyed either pre or postyour Europe or North America tour. Furthermore thisoffer is combinable, so if you decide to do two or threeTauck tours back-to-back you will double or triple yourhotel nights AND your complimentary airport transfersare still included! The typical cost of 2 nights in a Tauckhotel is $1000 per couple so this offer is fantastic.
I would love to discuss with you the wide range ofTauck Tours available throughout Europe and NorthAmerica. These tours are designed to take all the stressout of travel – you simply need to enjoy the experience!

Happy New Year. I have no doubt that2013 will present some challenges. However, we live in a beautiful part of theworld and we must enjoy and be gratefulfor what we have. I look forward toworking with you during this year.50 KPH SPEED LIMITIt has been brought to my attention that the50kph speed limit, known as the GeneralUrban Speed limit, on all roads unlessotherwise indicated, is not well known. This regulated speed limitwas implemented under the Transport Operational Road UseManagement Act. Some people have asked “how do we knowwhich speed limit we are under if we have not seen a sign.” Agood question and my advice would be to assume 50kph speedlimit unless advised by a sign. There are plenty of 60kph signsaround on the mountain so you would soon be advised.WONGAWALLAN ROADA 50kph speed sign has been erected on the western end ofWongawallan Road. People have been asking for more 50 kphspeed signs to be erected in the area. Council is reluctant to erecttoo many of these signs as it adds to sign pollution, a point withwhich I agree. As we have a General Urban Speed Limit of 50kph,we will monitor the effect the current sign has had and, hopefully, education of the community of the General Urban Speed Limit.SAFETY ON THE ROADSFurther to the notices above, I urge all to be aware that our roadsare used by vehicles, cyclists, runners and pedestrians. The lattertwo should always be on the right hand side of the road, travellingtowards the oncoming traffic. Drivers should be aware that, around each corner, you may face these users. Please take careand make 2013 as safe as possible.FREE BUS SERVICEThe free bus service on Thursdays during the school holidays toPacific Fair and Helensvale commenced on Thursday 10 January.Further buses will run on 17 and 24 January, 4 and 11 April and27 June. For bookings and information on collection points, please phone 07 5545 1139.KNOLL ROAD SPEED LIMITI have been advised that the speed review of Knoll Road has cometo the conclusion that the 50kph speed limit should be maintained. This finding still needs to be endorsed by two committees. I willbe receiving a briefing shortly and then I will be able to commentfurther.CAR PARK MACDONNELL ROADopened before Christmas and has been used by a few people. Iurge all business owners on Gallery Walk to ask their employeesto use this car park, thereby freeing up car parking in GalleryWalk itself.NEW SUPERMARKETI have had consultation with the developer of the new supermarketto see if a rear access from Beacon Road can be constructed. He iskeen to oblige but does have some land issues. I am conscious thatthe access route via Main Western Road is not the best for the frailand elderly. I will keep you informed.AUSTRALIA DAY AWARDSThese awards will be announced on Friday 25 January. I wishTamborine Mountain nominations the very best. CONSULTATIONI am moving the consultation in the library to the second Mondayof each month. The next consultation will be on Monday 11February, 4pm -5.30pm. I am also available for one on onemeetings at your convenience. My contact details are:Home: 07 5545 0223; Mobile: 0423 931 075;Email: [email protected]; and [email protected]

Tai chi teacher shows how tostretch mind and bodyIF your New Year’s resolution was to be more mindful of your
body, tai chi may be just what the doctor ordered.Tai chi practitioner Lee Chang Tye has been an exponent of the
Huang Shen Yang style of tai chi since 1984 and is lookingforward to introducing Tamborine Mountain residents to a form ofexercise that stretches the body and relaxes the mind.
After 15 years of living in the bustling city of Osaka, formerBrisbane resident Lee Chang discovered the natural beauty ofTamborine Mountain, where he will begin offering tai chi classeslater this month.
For those wanting an alternative form of inexpensive,equipment-free, slow, gentle exercise that energises, improvesposture and calms the mind and body, tai chi fits the bill.
“In the words of the tai chi masters, not only is tai chi a martialart, it is also a method of self cultivation that promotes harmony ofthe mind, health, and the attainment of rejuvenation andlongevity,” said Lee Chang.
“For seniors, medical research has shown that the slow gentlemeditative movements of tai chi can ease arthritic pain andimprove mobility, improve heart function and high blood pressureand physical strength, improve balance and help prevent falls, fight depression, promote deep breathing, improve mental clarity, strengthen lower body, raise energy levels, and improve sleep.”
Lee Chang’s classes will be open to people of all ages and levelsof ability and students will be able to develop at their own paceand to their own degree of interest.
“The beauty of practising tai chi is that its benefits aremultifaceted and a person can get whatever he or she wants from itaccording to his or her level of dedication and focus,” said LeeChang.
“If someone wants to open themselves up to the practice ofDaoism, personified by the movements and principles of tai chi, they can.
Lesson fees are modest and discounts will be given to seniorsand the unemployed. For further details, contact Lee Chang on0420 349 744 or email [email protected] for moreinformation.

WHEN it comes to orphaned babyflying foxes, Katrina Faulkes-Leng
happily admits to being a bit batty. While most women are proud of their
designer handbag, Katrina is happy toshow off her ‘bat bag’, recently surprisingfriends at a lunchtime gathering bybringing out orphaned baby flying fox,Saffron, for a feed.
“Baby Flying foxes are beautifulcreatures – puppy dogs with wings, and bigeyes in a tiny face with all the innocence ofthe young,” said Katrina.
Saffron came into Katrina’s care in earlyNovember after his mother had spent allnight protecting him from a dog after shewas caught in a yard. With a broken wingwhich could not be mended, it was obviousshe would never fly again.
“It is a hard truth that if a flying foxcannot fly, it must be euthanased,” saidKatrina.
Dogs and cats are a problem for flyingfoxes, as are barbed wire, fruit netting, cocos palms and cars.
“This year, fruit netting has contributedto most of our very large orphanpopulation,” said Katrina.
Saffron is now more than eight weeksold and is fed from a bottle four times aday. He shares space with his two ten-week-old cousins, mostly hanging about inthe upper storey of what was formerlyKatrina’s chicken coop.
In about four weeks’ time, the youngflying foxes will move into a crèche withother orphaned bats and prepare to maketheir move back into the wild.
“It is never the intention that they will bepets, but that they will be released into thereal bat world and create the next
generation of pollinators,” said Katrina.Katrina believes the battering flying
foxes have taken in the media is duelargely to fears of disease. However, aspollinators of trees and crops they play animportant role in nature, which often goesunappreciated.
“While the incidence of bats testingpositive to Australian Bat Lyssavirus(ABL) is rare, it is still important thatmembers of the public do not handle bats, and that includes the smaller, but verysharp-teethed microbats,” she said.
“If you find an injured bat or flying foxcontact us. We are vaccinated and trainedto deal with it.”

Tamborine Mountain rainfall totalsRainfall for December, 2012 on Tamborine Mountain
The rainfall expected at Fern St. for December is 143mm and the average is 166mmso this month was not a lot drier than normal. It rained fairly frequently through themonth on about 16 days from a series of troughs. There were thunderstorms, not severe,on the nights of the 3rd & the 18th. These thunderstorms produced spatial variability andrainfall recorded on the 22nd was especially variable across the Mountain.
The Southern Oscillation Index remained just positive throughout the month.Total Rainfall for 2012 on Tamborine Mountain
2012 continued in La Nina conditions with a very wet January and good rainfall inFebruary, March, April and June. Then it stopped! In the six months from July to theend of the year there was only 237mm of rain at Fern St. Only thrice before has therebeen less in this 6month period – 197mm in 1951, 226mm in 1990 and 230mm in 1918.The effects of the big wet lasted well into this dry period but, by the end of the year, tanks and gardens were really feeling it.
The SOI continued positive for the whole year but was fluctuating round zero in thelatter half. It was nice and hot by December.
Many thanks to the rainfall recorders who consistently contribute good data to thisrainfall network. I would welcome new recorders.

Stephen’s Banded Snake – Hoplocephalus stephensii – The Knoll NP.We were on our way out of the park, when the snake crossed the path a little way
ahead of us. Our great good fortune was that the snake opted to meander for severalminutes perhaps a metre from the track, as if to keep us company rather than disappearinto the undergrowth. The species grows to about 75 cm, is venomous and potentiallydangerous. Trying to identify a snake by its colouring can be tricky. A Stephen’s bandedsnake may not have any banding at all, or the banding may be grey and black and hardlyresemble this one.

JUST over three years ago, the ground onwhich Tamborine Mountain Sports Centre
now sits was a paddock. Tamborine Mountain Sports Centre is
managed and maintained totally byTamborine Mountain Sports AssociationLimited (TMSA), a not-for-profit companylimited by guarantee. The company'smembers are local sport and recreationclubs, not individuals, which use thefacilities under seasonal right of useagreements.
Unlike grounds on the Gold Coast andmany other local government areas, ourlocal Council plays no part in maintainingthe centre's facilities. That work is done bylocal volunteers and outside contractors. Ourfunding comes from canteen sales, right ofuse payments, donations, other fundraisingactivities and, occasionally, fromgovernment or quasi-government grants.TMSA holds a 25 year plus 25 year leaseover the facilities.
The sports centre is now used, not just bymembers of TMSA’s eight member clubs, but by an increasing number of joggers andwalkers, learner drivers, model aircraftflyers, model car racers and dog walkers andschools amongst others.
Extreme weather events in the past twoyears have dampened not only the grounds, but canteen income as seemingly weekendafter weekend was washed out. The grantprograms too became scarce as public funds, quite correctly, were redirected to restoreflood-damaged cities and towns throughoutQueensland; and a sluggish economycoupled with political uncertainty andchange contributed to a reduced contributionfrom community donations as manybusinesses and families struggled to survivea protracted economic slowdown.
Over the past year your Board’s clearstrategic focus has been on reducing thesport centre’s operating costs, on debtreduction, and on achieving sustainablerevenue growth. This strategy is beingimplemented successfully. After two yearsof lobbying, Council finally agreed inAugust to gift an end of life street mower tothe sports centre. That provided anopportunity for TMSA to vary an existingarrangement with Coolibah ConstructionsPty Ltd, which had to that point agreed tomow the off-field lawn areas. Given our‘new’ mower, Coolibah has now generouslyagreed to mow the playing fields, which inturn has allowed TMSA volunteers to takeover the off-field mowing. The result hasbeen a cut in mowing costs by some $300per week in the growing season and some$600 a month over winter.
Another significant cost reduction hasbeen achieved from the generous donationof $10,000 by Tamborine Mountain LionsClub to enable the purchase and installationof a 5KW solar power system for the
clubhouse. Other contributions have alsohad a significant effect. The canteen floorhas been sealed, the walls painted andflashing around the ceiling completed.Kevin Arnold’s generous donation of histime, skill and materials to fit-out thecanteen, along with the other improvementsmentioned, has allowed for a much moreefficient canteen workplace for volunteersand as more volunteers learn the barista’sart, coffee sales continue to increasesubstantially. The donation of outdoorfurniture by a young cricketer’s dad, Hank, further enhanced the canteen’s amenity.
A revitalised concentration on sustainablerevenue enhancement has also been a focus. Our first car-boot sale went ahead inNovember under the watchful eye ofBelinda O’Sullivan and despite it being on asomewhat showery Sunday, it was a success. As a result, quarterly car-boot sales will nowbe held on the third Sunday of February,May, August and November each year. InDecember 2012, Tour de Tamborine showedsignificant growth in participation numbersand now looks destined to grow further.TMSA was also once more a recipient offunding from the Chris Wills’ Memorialfundraiser. Other significant fundraisingevents are planned for Australia Day, forANZAC Day and, in association withGarterbelts & Gasoline, on the first weekendin May. I’d like to acknowledge the vastamount of work done by our Treasurer, SariNightingale who, after some seven years, has decided to take a break; Bret Arthur, whose contribution to TamborineMountain’s sporting community is withoutequal; Professor Paul Burton, on whosecounsel I regularly rely; John Flanagan, forhis insight and moderating influence; and CrNigel Waistell for his critical advice andsupport. I'd also like to acknowledge thehard work over the past two years of MickShutte, who recently stepped down ascurator; Barry Edwards whose ongoinggenerosity is praiseworthy and whose adviceon grounds maintenance has beeninvaluable; Adam Morrison and GordonHaldane from CW Pumps, each of whomcontinues to play a major role in groundsmaintenance; Mandy Curnow andLandcare’s Judith Rowland and Tony Hallfor their landscaping contributions andpassion for the cause; and TamborineMountain Butchery, North TamborineBakery and Tamborine Mountain Lions’Club for their generous support. Finally, I'dlike to thank Lance Cordingley for his wisecounsel and each of the delegates, canteenvolunteers, working bee participants and themany others who have helped.

Letters to the EditorReaders are reminded that letters to the editor must show full name of writer for publication.
Dear Editor,Compulsory voting is a myth. No matter
what the law says, there is no such thing.Think about it for a minute. Voting issupposed to be compulsory but it is alsosupposed to be secret. The two are mutuallyexclusive. All voting in a system of secretballoting is a private act. In other words, voting cannot be compulsory if it is secret. The Electoral Act is therefore a nonsense andcannot be enforced. Perhaps Ultra Varies(beyond one’s powers) comes close todescribing it. The only thing that iscompulsory is to turn up at the polling boothand have your name crossed off the electoralrole. After that you can write anything youplease and nobody can do a thing about it.
To do this is called voting informally. Andagain we have the conundrum thatdeliberately casting an informal vote is saidto be unlawful. This is ridiculous becausesuch a legal requirement is impossible toenforce. I do not like what any of the currentleaders (Labor, Coalition or Greens) standfor, or the way they behave in parliament, and so I intend to vote informally at the nextfederal election. To advocate such a positionis also not lawful but who is going toprosecute me? The whole thing is anabsolute farce.
In the early days when our population wassmall and scattered over a vast landscape theidea of compulsory voting might have hadsome merit. Even then it was impossible toenforce but the myth ensured a good turnoutat the polls. And the further myth that thiswas necessary to ensure a democraticuniversal suffrage elected a representativegovernment was cited then as now. It is saidthat in a democracy it is every citizen’s rightand duty to cast a vote to elect people toform a government (I should add that the
government is not only the party in powerbut includes the opposition as well). Well, what about a citizen’s right to withhold his orher vote if that citizen considers that none ofthe candidates or parties is worthy? Aninformal vote is not necessarily an ignorantvote. It can indicate a more informed andthoughtful response than many a vote cast byblindly following a party how-to-vote card.
It should be remembered that mostcountries including Britain, Canada,Denmark, Eire, France, Germany, Hungary,Israel, Japan, Norway, Portugal, Sweden andthe United States do not have compulsoryvoting. In fact according to Wikipedia in thewhole world only Argentina, Australia,Brazil, Congo, Ecuador, Luxembourg,Nauru, Peru, Singapore and Uruguay enforcecompulsory voting.
In conclusion it is often said that unlessvoting is compulsory the elected governmentis not a truly representative one and thereforesomehow lacks authenticity. This isnonsense because compulsory voting ensuresthat the “donkey” vote (that is, the vote ofpeople who neither care about norunderstand the issues) has an effect on theoutcome. On the other hand, if voting is notcompulsory the result reflects the wishes ofthose who do care about and who dounderstand the issues. No doubt manylearned and thoughtful people will disagreewith my reasoning, as did the magistratewhen I once contested the Electoral Office’sdecision to fine me for not voting. Heoffered no response when I maintained thathis decision to enforce the fine forced peoplelike me to hypocritically have their namescrossed off the roll before deliberatelycasting an informal vote.

Dear Editor,I feel compelled to write this because
there is a very real possibility that yetanother icon of Tamborine Mountain historymay be in jeopardy of closing its doors.

Dear Editor,I read Ben Miller’s letter in the 18
December Issue and it was obvious that hewas quite excited to see the large RichardBirdwing Butterfly (RBB) at close range. The RBB was once common from Graftonto Maryborough and west to the GreatDividing Range. The decline in numbersstarted in the early 1900 with the clearingof rainforests for urban development, farming and forestry. The flowers of thenative frangipani, native hibiscus andlillipilli attract the butterfly. If you haveaccess to a computer, the websitewww.richmondbirdwing.org.au for the
RBB Conservation Network has goodinformation and a list of nurseries thatpropagate the vine (Pararistolochiapraevenosa) which is the food source forthe RBB caterpillar. The Tamborine BushVolunteers (TBV) have planted severalRBB vines in Tamborine National Park. Ifyou would like to support this work toattract the RBB to Tamborine Mountain adonation of $7.50 will purchase a RBBvine. Contact 33557288 [email protected].

this? It is disgusting and verging on sexualharassment and it makes me feel vulnerable. No excuse for your behavior is acceptable. Please show the women of our mountainsome consideration and respect.(Name and address supplied but withheld
at Editor’s discretion)
Dear Editor,In response to the letter from Geraldine
Lucas, not all people on the planet areChristians but a lot of us enjoy celebratingthe season by sharing a special meal andgifts with our families on Christmas Day.And sending cards to each other remindsus of the family and friends we care about.
I think it is lovely that Christmas Cardsare available for everyone. You can alwaysmake your own cards and say whateveryou like if you don’t like any in the shops.
I hope everyone had a peacefulChristmas and my wishes are for goodhealth and happiness in 2013.

18 – TAMBORINE MOUNTAIN NEWS VOL. 1344, 15 JANUARY, 2013
IN 1846, the world was agog with thenews that Louis Napoleon had escaped to
London from a fortress where he was beingheld. But the bigger, if less noticed, newsthat would later impact on the TamborineMountain community, was that AdolpheSax had patented the saxophone. It wasonly some 166 years later that Saxophonist,Isaac Paterson, would join the orchestrahere to play the Saxophone for us.
After doing what so many of us do – on awhim, dusting off our old instrument whichhas been lying dormant over the years andfinding that playing again is fun, Isaacreturned to his sax after an absence ofsome14 years.
After starting playing in primary school,Isaac hit the world stage (well, sort of)when his mum, Ann, signed him up for theOxenford State School band. Later, Isaactook time off from his work as anelectrician to go snow-boarding with threemates in Canada for five months. A brokenwrist, time on his hands and a return of themuse led Isaac back to his now inseparablesaxophone. Out came the old tutorial books– inside went the neighbours. Dad, Norm, was spotted wearing ear muffs duringpractice sessions but loyally maintains thatit was cold ears in mid-summer that ledhim to wear them.
Seeking a few lessons, Isaac went toMalcolm Cunningham, the Director ofMusic of the Tamborine MountainOrchestra. This was an inspired idea asMalcolm’s coaching and encouragementtook Isaac’s playing from strength tostrength. Within a few months Isaacdecided to try for a Grade Three AMEBmusic qualification. As confidence andcompetence increased, the bar was raisedand Isaac has just successfully completedthe Grade Five examinations – a laudableeffort after a 14 year lay-off.
‘Great, just great!’ is Isaac’s comment
about his experience in the orchestra: greatcompany, great friendliness, greatenjoyment, great progress. Such is hisenthusiasm that Isaac now also plays withthe Gold Coast Big Band and theHinterland Community Band and has alsotaken up learning the clarinet and thepiano! The whim to pick up his oldsaxophone has resulted in new interests, lots of fun and a host of new friends.
It should be pointed out that it is notactually necessary to break one’s wrist tohave fun with music. If you can play aninstrument (being shockingly rusty is OK),can read music and would like to add a newdimension of fun and achievement to yourlife, think about joining our local orchestra.Malcolm Cunningham writes arrangementsto suit the level of competence of ourplayers and we thoroughly enjoy our musicin a non-threatening, happy environment.

slavishly following the latest trend. That’s the philosophy of Chrissy
Keepence (right) who is planning totake Mountain residents on a backto the future trolley bus tour thatcombines morning tea with goodold fashioned manners, a few tipson style and culminates in ashopping excursion to one of theMountain’s vintage outlets.
A devotee of 1940s swing musicand dance, Chrissy took her interestin the era a step further when sheopened her Lindy Charm School, with the aim of ensuring the arts ofdeportment, grooming and etiquettewould not be lost.
Her Tea and Manners on MountTamborine event on Sunday January27 features a morning tea at theBungunyah Manor, whereparticipants will learn about thehistory of taking tea and some of thesocial niceties that it entails.
She will also be offering advice toyoung people – and anyone else whowishes to update their image – onhow vintage and retro fashion cancreate a cutting edge look andmakeup tips that draw on techniqueswhich are almost a lost art.
