SCULPTOR AT PLAYLife and art join to reveal a dynamic partnership in the work of Fredrick Prescott. The joy and animation seen in Prescott’s sculptures simultaneously evoke the natural world and it’s imaginary counterpart. As graphically bold and colorful as his pieces are, they always look perfectly at ease in a natural setting, though there is no denying their otherworldly quality. The dichotomy between the real and the imaginary in Prescott’s artwork lead to the creation of a captivating, multi-dimensional art form. Using the visual and emotional impact of brilliant color on moving steel, the artist produces sculptures reflecting his singularly fantastic perception of the world around him. His work is seen as a blend of folk art, pop art, and technically advanced construction.
Fredrick Prescott’s childhood experiences foreshadow his innovative artistic style that centers on kinetic scenarios and landscapes. Born in Palo Alto in 1949, the oldest son of the chief inventor and owner of the Universal Coin Meter Company, Prescott began working with metal at the age of six. In a playground of band saws, punch presses and metal grinders, the he spent countless hours honing the skills he uses to transform metal into art by cutting, bending, and welding. By age twelve, Prescott was
enrolled in a watercolor painting class where he immediately developed a passion for color. By both sculpting and painting his artwork, he began his career fascination for bold and colorful metal sculpture.
Everything surrounding him in the world serves as a constant inspiration to Fredrick Prescott. The vibrant colors that find their way into his sculptures are drawn from the distinctively electric palette of the contemporary world. The artist’s pieces reflect his experiences, as he transforms them into the half-real, half-fantastic images that are a tangible example of the joy and humor he finds in all that he perceives. Whether depicting businessmen on Wall Street, surfers with their boards, outer space, pink Cadillacs and vintage automobiles, or the world of animals and nature, all vignettes are created from the joyful perspective of the artist.
Those who find joy in Prescott’s work come from every walk of life. A vast audience, including sophisticated art collectors, museums and corporations, make Fredrick Prescott’s sculpture a part of their lives. Prescott attributes his appeal to the “primitive need people have to laugh and have fun. Many people do not experience these emotions in their daily existence.” Fredrick Prescott’s artwork is a reminder to
everyone that daily life in itself is full of an infinite amount movement and color, and is the first place one might look for inspiration and enjoyment.
Always striving to catch up to the hundreds of ideas constantly whirling inside his head, Prescott overwhelms himself in a frenzy of activity that encompasses every stage of his creative process. His life runs at the fevered pace of an artist who is constantly recreating himself. His artistic resources and boundless creative energy are stimulated by all that he hears, sees, touches, and learns. The breadth and ambition of his ideas promise to bring a constant audience for all of his future creations.
MONUMENTAL LIGHT-HEARTED KINETIC WIND SCULPTUREFred Prescott’s monumental sculptures are colorful and gigantic- always life-sized and sometimes larger. They invariably make a huge statement on the landscape they live upon. Welded contoured lines enhance the natural curves of the animal’s bodies, while giving each form a marvelously graphic impact. Ingeniously designed with sculptural methods that have been perfected over time, each animal is an individual. Through

variations on size, body contours, colors, and patina, no two are alike.
SCULPTURES THAT MOVE IN THE WINDPerhaps the most remarkable aspects of these wonderful beasts are their kinetic engineering; they move naturally in the wind. The heads of each animal are precisely balanced on their bearings, enabling them to move up and down when the wind blows. The resulting motion closely resembles an animal’s natural manner. This movement lends a life-like quality to these ultra-contemporary sculptures and is the trademark of Fredrick Prescott. For installation in a public access venue, the animals are further fitted with a locking mechanism on the moveable parts so as to prevent injury through inadvertent detachment, or theft. Holes in the flat, stable feet of the sculptures allow for secure fastening to a display site or pad.
THE SCULPTURES’ CONSTRUCTIONWith a sturdy weather-resistant construction of steel or corten steel, these monumental sculptures are built to live outside. Corten steel is the material of which bridges and other engineered structures are made. Prescott utilizes the most technologically advanced tools to transform raw sheets of
steel into three-dimensional canvases. He draws each image onto the full-color, graphic computer connected to his Hypertherm plasma-cutting system. A 440-volt arc of electricity, which the artist compares to a bolt of lightning, recreates the forms in steel. The artist’s “canvas” is then ready to be painted.
RUSTED PATINAThe rusted sculptures are allowed to achieve a natural patina through an initial treatment of salt and water. An optional transparent coating can be used to lock in the rust effect and to protect against the elements. Since corten steel has a higher iron content than regular steel, the corten steel animals have a stronger orange tone natural patina. Regular steel ages to a wonderful warm brown tone. Stainless steel feet and bearings are used to protect the sculptures from friction and wear.
POWDER COATINGOptionally, powder coating can be applied to those animals intended to be finished with a colorful paint. Powder coating is the longest lasting color finish to be applied to steel and is literally baked into the steel of the sculpture. Powder coating involves the spraying of finely ground, electro-statically charged particles of pigment and resin onto electro-statically grounded surfaces where they adhere.
To improve adhesion and ensure that the surface is absolutely clean of grease, dirt, and rust, the surface is sandblasted and treated with iron phosphate. After drying, the sculpture is placed in a spray booth where each layer of powder coating is applied using pneumatic pumps and powder spray guns, in a manner similar to that used for automobiles. Between each application of powder, the sculpture is placed in a curing oven where the powder melts, flows, and cures when it reaches a temperature of 400F degrees for ten minutes. On large and heavy sculptures like these, baking can take an hour for a final cure. Finally, the sculpture is coated with an ultra-violet resistant clear powder coat.
