By Sam MellingerKansas City Star
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Let this be remembered as the day the relentlessly creative history of Kansas City Chiefs playoff failures attempted to baptize Pat-rick Mahomes as its own.
Let this be remembered as the day the franchise with a postseason crimi-nal rap sheet 50 years long nearly had an all-timer.
Let this be remembered as the day Mahomes and the Chiefs saw those ghosts, felt those ghosts, and then stepped through those ghosts in an unfor-gettable and historic 51-31 comeback win over the Houston Texans in an AFC Divisional Round playoff game at Arrow-head Stadium Sunday.
Mahomes is a legend. That’s been the destina-
tion of his career since the beginning, and he’ll
need a Super Bowl cham-pionship to completely vanquish any remaining doubt, but this is a pretty clear moment.
The franchise that claimed the second-biggest blown lead in NFL playoff history a few months before it drafted Mahomes now owns the third-biggest comeback in playoff history.
A thousand things had to go their way, of course, including a bafflingly stu-
pid call by Texans coach Bill O’Brien to fake a second-quarter punt, but the Chiefs were able to do this because they employ Mahomes.
Before Sunday, teams that trailed by 21 points after the first quarter lost 135 of 143 times, includ-ing all six in the playoffs. They lost by an average of 39 points.
The Chiefs responded with three touchdowns in 3 minutes, 21 seconds,
the beginning of 41 unan-swered points. You would not have had a more sur-prising twist if Andy Reid coached the second half on horseback.
Mahomes led one of the NFL’s greatest playoff comebacks of all-time by becoming the first playoff quarterback of all-time with 300 yards passing, five touchdowns and 50 yards rushing.
This one will be in his career’s montage.
Let us not forget how cooked the Chiefs made themselves by the end of that first quarter. Chris Jones, the star defensive tackle, was a mildly sur-prising game-time scratch with a calf injury suffered in Thursday’s practice. As a prelude to doom, you could’ve done worse.
Then it got worse. A blown coverage touch-down on the Texans’ first drive, Travis Kelce drop-ping a wide-open third-down pass on the Chiefs’ first drive, and a blocked punt for another Texans touchdown.

4-11. The Bulldogs dug too deep a hole to escape with the Oilers growing a 16-7 first-quarter lead to 33-17 at the half.
Wells finished with 18 points and 12 rebounds for EA-WR, which shot 53 percent (20 of 38) from the field, including 6 of 16 from 3-point range, and made 12 of 16 free throws. Ryan Dawson made 7 of 9 shots and scored 17 points, Spencer Slayden had nine points and Ahmad Allen added seven points for the Oilers.
Roxana 65, Father McGivney 36 – The Shells made it a weekend sweep by routing the Griffins in Glen Carbon. Roxana, which defeated Greenville in overtime Friday night in Roxana, moves to 11-6. McGivney is 3-14.
Four players scored in double figures for the Shells, who led 37-25 at halftime before putting the Griffins away with a 22-4 third quarter. Senior Jake Golenor scored 18 points while matching his career high with six 3-pointers. Parris White scored 13 points, Braeden
Wells scored a career-high 12 points and Gavin Huffman scored 10 points
for Roxana, which got eight points from Andrew Beckman.
Edwardsville 52, Freeburg 48 – Preston Weaver’s 3-pointer with
3:35 remaining in the fourth quarter snapped a tie and propelled the Tigers to a victory over the Midgets in Freeburg. Edwardsville is 9-6. Freeburg is 13-4.
The Tigers converted 10 of 17 3-pointers in the victory. Brennan Weller scored 16 points, Ethan Young tossed in 10 points and Jack Nafziger had nine points off three treys. Weaver matched his career high with seven points.
The Midgets, who led 24-21 at the half, picked up 15 points from Luke Ervie and 10 points from Colin Brueggeman.
Carlyle 49, Staunton 46 – Three Bulldogs accounted for all but two of their team’s points and it was not enough to beat the Indians in Carlyle. The Indians are 7-9. Staunton is 8-7.
Ethan Booth scored 17 points, Frank Goss made three 3-pointers and scored 15 points, and Brent Kinder scored 12 points for the Dogs.
Calhoun 61, Carrollton 40 – The Hawks hinted of an upset early, but could not sustain the push in a first-round loss to the Warriors at the Winchester Tournament.
Calhoun, coming off its first loss Thursday against Payson Seymour, moves to 12-1. Carrollton is 4-9.
The Hawks led 18-13 after one quarter. Calhoun responded with a 12-2 second quarter to lead 20-25 at the half and took an 11-point lead to the final period.
Corey Nelson went off for 27 points for the fourth-seeded Warriors, who got 17 points from Ben Eberlin and 14 points from Brody Caselton. Carrollton’s Kyle Leonard scored 14 points, Grant Pohlman had nine points and Seth Howard had eight points.
Payson Seymour 81, North Greene 62 – The second-seeded Indians stayed unbeaten with a victory over the Spartans in a first-round matchup at the Winchester Tourney. Payson is 15-0. North Greene is 6-10.
The Indians scored big early while taking command with a 51-26 halftime lead. Keaton Brown scored 21 points, Will Killion scored 16 points and Brayden Wyatt added nine for North Greene.

Greg Shashack | The TelegraphRoxana’s Jake Golenor (22) pushes the ball upcourt ahead of teammates Gavin Huffman (left) and Parris White (right) in a Nov. 29 game at the Metro-East Lutheran Tourney in Edwardsville. On Saturday night in Glen Carbon, Golenor matches his career high with six 3-pointers in a win over Father McGivney.

Roundup
SIUE 22-13 in the second half and connected on 20-24 free throws in the half and 27-35 in the game.
“We went zone a little bit more in the second half,” explained Barone. “And Anselm (Uzuegbu-nem) and Mike (Adewun-mi) were out with fouls
so we had some smaller lineups.”
Playing against an almost-constant press, SIUE turned the ball over 17 times accounting for 16 EKU points. The Cougars were 16-25 (64 percent) at the free throw line for the game.
“I wish everyone could see how hard our guys are fighting and how far they have come and to give
them the respect they have earned and they deserve because I believe in these guys so much,” Barone added. “That being said, you have to knock down free throws and you have to make the layups. We need to make some shots under duress.”
The Cougars collected 14 assists and saw four players score in double figures, led by Tyresse
Williford who scored a game-high 20 points and added six rebounds and five assists. Zeke Moore scored 17 points and Cam Williams and Brandon Jackson each scored 10 points. “What that shows is that you have a bunch of guys who are figuring out how to play together,” Barone said.
EKU was led by Jomaru Brown who scored 20
points. Michael Moreno and Lachlan Anderson each scored 14 points and Tre King added 12 for the Colonels, who return to Edwardsville for a game February 8.
SIUE returns to First Community Arena for four straight games beginning Thursday with Tennessee Tech.
“When we go back home, we’re going to re-
introduce this team to our community because we haven’t been there forever and I think they’re going to really proud of them,” Barone said. “Everyone in the locker room under-stands there is a bigger picture that we’re fighting for every day. But you still have to produce. We have to go get the next one and then figure out the next one after that.”

COLLEGE FOOTBALL
Clemson can join elite company with win vs LSUNEW ORLEANS (AP)
— Clemson coach Dabo Swinney has this drill down.
The Sunday before the College Football Playoff championship game a news conference is held with the head coaches. They compliment each other’s team and talk about focus and preparation. After, they shake hands and pose for photographs with the trophy that goes to the winner.
This was Swinney’s third time doing the dance, always as the team trying to derail a dynasty. Now his Tigers are on the cusp of joining exclusive in col-lege football history.
No. 3 Clemson (14-0) will try to become the fourth team since The Associated Press began crowning college football national champions in 1936 to win three titles in four seasons when it faces No. 1 LSU (14-0) on Monday night at the Superdome.
“They know,” Swin-ney said of his players.
“They’re very well aware of what they’ve been able to achieve. And listen, regard-less of what happens in the game tomorrow night, it’s really been a historic run. To win two out of the last three national champion-ships is amazing.”
To win the first two, Clemson upset Alabama twice in the championship game. The Tigers also lost twice to Nick Saban’s Crimson Tide in the play-off, including in the 2015 final.
In those previous Sun-day-before-the-final news conferences, it was often Swinney — who grew up in Alabama and played on the Tide’s 1992 title team — being asked to put Saban’s unprecedented tenure in Tuscaloosa into perspective.
Fast forward to Sunday and it’s Clemson that has put itself in position to match one of Alabama’s greatest accomplishments. The Crimson Tide was the last team to win three championships in four sea-sons, winning BCS titles
in 2009, ‘11 and ‘12. The Tide has won five cham-pionships in 13 seasons under Saban.
Nebraska, under coach Tom Osborne, won nation-al titles in 1994-95 and then shared the champion-ship in 1997 with Michi-gan after being voted No. 1 in the final coaches poll.
Notre Dame won three in four seasons in 1946-47 and ‘49, being crowned the champs by the AP each time.
A case cab be made that what Clemson is trying to do would top them all.
The playoff makes teams go through two quality opponents to earn a cham-pionship. The Tigers were the first major college foot-ball team in the modern era to go 15-0 last year and will have to do it again to repeat, beating two unde-feated opponents in Ohio State and LSU along the way.
A victory Monday night in front of what will unquestionably be a parti-san crowd in LSU’s back-yard will make Clemson
the seventh major college program since 1950 to win at least 30 straight games.
The last team to win back-to-back national titles with a perfect record was Nebraska in the mid-90s. Those Cornhuskers played a total of 25 games.
Swinney has often com-plained this season that his team hasn’t received the respect it deserved while running roughshod through the Atlantic Coast Conference. Clemson was the first AP preseason No. 1 to end the season No. 3 despite not losing a game since it happened to Ala-bama in 1966.
Swinney turned per-ceived slights into fuel for his team. Clemson is a verified college football superpower, but the Tigers remain upstarts, still with something to prove in their minds.
“Ever since I’ve been at Clemson that’s how it’s been,” All-America line-backer Isaiah Simmons said. “We always get the, ‘We don’t play anybody,’ this and that.
“We’re like the red-headed stepchild in other groups.”
So Clemson is embrac-ing that narrative enter-ing this championship game as underdogs again. LSU is about a six-point favorite behind Heisman Trophy winner Joe Bur-row and a record-breaking offense.
The senior who trans-ferred from Ohio State in 2018 is on pace to break the FBS record for comple-tion percentage at 77.6. He has thrown for 5,208 yards and 55 touchdowns. Burrow can become the first Heisman winner to win the national title since Alabama’s Derrick Henry helped the Tide beat Clem-son in the 2015 title game, and the first Heisman win-ning quarterback to win it all since Florida State’s Jameis Winstion in 2013.
Burrow is the odds-on favorite to be the first player selected in the next NFL draft. The quarterback on the other side, Trevor Lawrence, is already the front-runner to
be No. 1 overall in 2021.The sophomore has yet
to play in a losing game in college and Clemson is 25-0 when he starts.
“A winner, very quick release, very well-coached, outstanding feet, knows where to go with the ball, can run,” Orgeron said, rattling off what makes Lawrence so good.
No matter what happens Monday night, Clemson will begin next season as one of the favorites to win the national title. The 50-year-old Swinney also just signed the highest-rated recruiting class he has ever had in 10 seasons at Clemson.
This impressive run is far from over. But first things first.
“I think when you focus on that, you’re focusing on the magnitude of the moment and you lose the joy of the moment,” Swin-ney said. “That’s all we try to focus on is just being great where our feet are and just have some fun doing what we do to get ready.”
