About the Symphony

Marking its 72nd Season in 2015–2016, The Hartford Symphony

Orchestra is Connecticut’s premier musical organization. The Hartford Symphony is the second largest orchestra in New England and is widely recognized as one of America’s leading regional orchestras. We believe passionately in the performance of live symphonic music and its value in the community. To that end, the mission of the HSO is to perform live orchestral music of the highest quality for everexpanding audiences, and to increase through its educational programs the understanding and enjoyment of that music by residents in Connecticut.

The HSO presents more than 100 concerts annually, including the Masterworks Series, POPS! Series, Sunday Serenades, Jazz & Strings, Lincoln Financial Discovery Concerts, Symphony in the Schools, Musical Dialogues, and more. In addition, the HSO celebrates the 19th year of its tremendously popular summer series, the Talcott Mountain Music Festival, this summer in Simsbury.

The Hartford Symphony Orchestra named Carolyn Kuan as its tenth music director in January 2011. Since beginning her tenure in 2011, she has led the HSO to new artistic heights with community-minded concerts and innovative programming.

The Hartford Symphony Orchestra was founded in 1934 and formally established as the Symphony Society of Greater Hartford in 1936. Angelo Coniglione, Jacques Gordon,

Leon Barzin, Moshe Paranov, and George Heck were the Orchestra’s first music directors. With the appointment of Fritz Mahler in 1953, the HSO began its Young People’s Concerts and made several highly acclaimed recordings for Vanguard. In 1964, Arthur Winograd became music director and the Orchestra grew in artistic stature, performing at Carnegie Hall and other New York locations to highly favorable reviews. Under the artistic leadership of Michael Lankester from 1985–2000, the HSO received national recognition for its programming innovations, in cluding the popular Classical Conversations and Family Matinees, as well as

a series of landmark theatrical productions. From 2001–2011, Edward Cumming led the HSO to new levels of artistic excellence and innovative programming.

Each season, the HSO plays to audiences numbering more than 90,000 statewide. The Hartford Symphony Orchestra’s extensive array of Education and Community Activities serves more than 63,000 individuals in Hartford and surrounding communities annually. The Hartford Symphony Orchestra is supported by nearly 4,500 subscribers and over 2,000 donors. The organization has been greatly strengthened by an extensive level of communication and involvement with its musicians that has become a national model for orchestral governance. Now representing 15% of the Board of Directors and one-third of its Executive Committee, musicians also serve on all major Board committees.

Music Director

With her appointment as the 10th Music Director of the

Hartford Symphony Orchestra beginning in 11/12, Carolyn Kuan is a skilled interpreter and impressive podium presence recognizable on a national level. Recognized as a conductor of extraordinary versatility, Ms. Kuan has enjoyed successful associations with top-tier orchestras, opera companies, ballet companies, and festivals worldwide. Her commitment to contemporary music has defined her approach to programming, and established her as an international resource for new music and world premieres.

Ms. Kuan’s recent North American engagements have included performances with the symphonies of Baltimore, Detroit, Milwaukee, San Francisco, and Seattle; the Florida and Louisville orchestras; the New York City Ballet; Colorado Music Festival; the New York City Opera, Santa Fe Opera, and Washington National Opera. Recent international engagements have included concerts with the Bournemouth Symphony, Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, Hong Kong Philharmonic, National Symphony of Taiwan, Residentie Orkest, Orquesta Sinfonica de Yucatan, Royal Danish Ballet, West Australian Symphony, and the Toronto Symphony Orchestra.

Combining her expertise and love of contemporary and Asian music, Ms. Kuan began the 2014/2015 Season in a summer-long debut with the Santa Fe Opera. She worked closely with composer Huang Ruo and director James Robinson, and Dr. Sun Yat-Sen premiered to great critical acclaim with a mixed cast of east and west singers and instrumentalists. In addition to her weeks with the Hartford Symphony Orchestra, other highlights included her debut with the Washington National Opera at the Kennedy Center in Daniel Catan’s Florencia en el Amazonas, directed by Francesca Zambello; her return to the Seattle Symphony to lead works by Tan Dun, Yugo Kanno (U.S. Premiere), and Unsuk Chin; her return to Brazil to work with Orquestra Sinfônica do Estado de São Paulo in a program of Britten, Turnage, and Bernstein; and her debut with the Glimmerglass Festival in a new production of The Magic Flute in summer 2015.

While maintaining a solid connection with traditional repertoire, Ms. Kuan has cultivated a unique expertise in Asian music and contemporary works. From 2007 to 2012, Ms. Kuan directed the annual San Francisco Symphony Chinese New Year concert. For the Seattle Symphony, Ms. Kuan helped launch the

hugely successful Celebrate Asia! program with community leaders representing eight Asian cultures, and led sold-out performances for three consecutive years. She led would premiers for Music from Japan, and conducted multimedia productions of the Butterfly Lovers Concerto and A Monkey’s Tale as part of Detroit Symphony’s World Music Series.

From 2003 to 2012, Ms. Kuan worked closely with the Cabrillo Festival of Contemporary Music and visiting composers. Some of her finest successes have bridged the gap between cultural and social issues, as in her work raising awareness of conservation and the environment through her performances around the globe of the multimedia project

Life: A Journey Through Time. Developed by the Cabrillo Festival of Contemporary Music and music director Marin Alsop, the project features music by Philip Glass and images by famed National Geographic photographer Frans Lanting. Ms. Kuan’s notable performances of Life include a presentation at the Ninth World Wilderness Congress with Orquesta Sinfonica de Yucatan; at the eight-day June festival, CHANGE IS POWERFUL, with the Detroit Symphony; and at CERN’s historical Large Hadron Collider Inauguration, with Orchestre de la Suisse Romande attended by Swiss President Pascal Couchpin, French Prime Minister François Fillon, more than 20 other European heads of state, and dozens of Nobel laureates.

Ms. Kuan’s past associations include Associate Conductor of the Seattle Symphony Orchestra, Artist-in-Residence at the New York City Ballet, and Assistant Conductor for the Baltimore Opera Company. In her 2012 debut album for the Naxos label, Ms. Kuan conducted the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra in various works by Chinese composers.

The recipient of numerous awards, Ms. Kuan holds the distinction of being the first female to be awarded the Herbert von Karajan Conducting Fellowship by the Herbert von Karajan Centrum and American Austrian Foundation in 2003, resulting in her residency at the 2004 Salzburg Festival. Winner of the first Taki Concordia Fellowship, she has received additional awards from the Women’s Philharmonic, Conductors Guild, and Susan W. Rose Fund for Music. Ms. Kuan graduated cum laude from Smith College, received a Master of Music from the University of Illinois, and a Performance Diploma from the Peabody Conservatory.

Volunteers

Since its inception, volunteers have been at the heart of the Hartford Symphony’s Talcott Mountain Music Festival. They are the men and women who help you park,

who set up and take down the tables, who take your tickets and hand you your program. They serve as the emergency first response team. They staff our boutique.

The hundreds of volunteers are vital to there being a Talcott Mountain Music Festival. Many of these volunteers are celebrating their twentieth year of making the Sounds of

Summer happen. All of us at the Hartford Symphony Orchestra thank them.

Dear Visitor,

Welcome to the Town of Simsbury and please join us as we celebrate the Hartford Symphony Orchestra’s 20th year of performances in our town! This year’s Talcott Mountain Music Festival – with everything from Mambo Kings to Celebrate America to 20 Seasons in Simsbury (under the baton of Michael Lankester, who conducted the HSO’s first concert here 20 years ago!) – has something for everybody. We congratulate the Symphony on its reappointment of Carolyn Kuan as Music Director and look forward to many more seasons of music under the stars! We invite you to relax, enjoy a beautiful evening and allow yourself to be transported by the wonderful musicians of the Hartford Symphony Orchestra.

Take advantage of your time here in Simsbury! We are a vibrant community with unique historic charm, a quaint downtown, terrific places to shop and lots of quality restaurants. Simsbury was designated as the state’s first Bicycle Friendly Community by the American League of Cyclists and with more than thirty percent of its geographical area designated as open space, Simsbury has miles of multi-use trails for walking and biking. Simsbury is known for its quality schools, services and recreational opportunities including three golf courses, an international ice skating center, horseback riding, kayaking, canoeing, fishing and more. In addition to its status as a federally designated Preserve America community, Simsbury was selected as the first and only town in Connecticut to make the National Trust for Historic Preservation’s list of Dozen Distinctive Destinations on the National Trust for Historic Preservation. Thanks to amenities such as the Talcott Mountain Music Festival, Simsbury is regularly ranked as one of the best places to live in the nation, most recently by CNN Money Magazine in 2013. In March, 2015 Simsbury was identified as one of the Top Ten Towns in Connecticut for Young Families by NerdWallet.

Under the management of Simsbury Meadows Performing Arts Center, Inc., our Performing Arts Center has a strong and growing reputation as a destination for arts and entertainment in the region. We thank SMPAC, the Hartford Symphony Orchestra, their respective boards, staff and the many, many volunteers who work so hard to make these concerts a success.

We are sure that you will enjoy tonight’s concert and we invite you to take the time to explore Simsbury and all that it has to offer.

Sincerely,

Lisa L. Heavner

Dear Friends,

On behalf of the entire Hartford Symphony Orchestra and Music Director Carolyn Kuan, I am thrilled to welcome you to the 20th Anniversary Season of the Talcott Mountain Music Festival! It is an incredible honor to present this summer’s concerts for the 20th consecutive year in Simsbury, and to partner with the wonderful people at the Performing Arts Center at Simsbury Meadows. This summer’s festival may be the best yet, with a great variety of music, performers, and special guests. Burning Latin jazz, a patriotic celebration of Independence Day, a 20-year retrospective led by founding Music Director Michael Lankester, grooving dance music of the 70s, and

Queen’s iconic rock anthems – it’s all here in Simsbury this summer.

Reflecting on the festival’s humble beginnings in an empty field, the thousands of volunteers who have poured their hearts and souls into creating magical evenings of music and community, and the generous sponsors who have made the music possible – we salute you. Thanks to all of you, we gather with family and friends for the Sounds of Summer once again and continue a great American tradition. Please join me in thanking our Festival Sponsor, the Richard P. Garmany Fund at Hartford Foundation for Public Giving, as well as the many other sponsors who generously support this festival. Additionally, we extend our deepest thanks to the Town of Simsbury for welcoming us to this bucolic location, and to our many Annual Fund donors who make it possible for us to offer lawn tickets at $20 or less. Simply put, without all of you there would be no Talcott Mountain Music Festival and certainly no 20th Anniversary Season. Bravo!

Finally, I invite you to explore our 2015-16 season of concerts at The Bushnell Center for the Performing Arts. Masterworks, Pops!, Discovery Series children’s concerts and more feature the full creative force of the Hartford Symphony Orchestra performing a range of inspiring music. The season tagline is “Be Transformed” – transformed by the power of music to touch our lives in a completely unique and powerful way.

Thank you for joining us this evening, and for the last 20 seasons in Simsbury. I invite you to share your Talcott experiences with us through our Facebook page (facebook.com/hartfordsymphony) and Twitter account (@HSOTweets) and be sure tag us in your Instagram photos and follow our new Instagram account (instagram.com/hartfordsymphony). Now sit back, relax, and enjoy the Sounds of Summer!

Sincerely,

With 31 years experience as a Music Director, 35 years as a conductor of

Pops, and 33 years in the opera pit, BoB Bernhardt brings a unique perspective and ability each time he is on the podium, and in every genre.

In 2015, Bob Bernhardt was named Principal Pops Conductor of the Grand Rapids Symphony and is currently in his 18th season as Principal Pops Conductor of the Louisville Orchestra (and in his 33rd consecutive season there), and in his 3rd season as Music Director Emeritus and Principal Pops Conductor of the Chattanooga Symphony and Opera (where he was Music Director for 19 seasons). He has also been Artist-in-Residence at Lee University since 2012.

Formerly, he was Principal Conductor/Artistic Director of the Rochester Philharmonic, Music Director and Conductor of the Tucson Symphony, Principal Guest Conductor of Kentucky Opera, Music Director and Conductor of the Amarillo Symphony, and Artistic Director of the Lake Placid Sinfonietta.

This season marks his 22nd as a frequent guest of the Boston Pops, which he first conducted at John Williams’ invitation in 1992. Along with Boston, he has been a frequent guest conductor of the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra (approaching his 10th season as conductor of their Symphony Under the Sky Festival), the Baltimore Symphony, the Detroit Symphony, the Cincinnati Pops, the Pittsburgh Symphony, the Dallas Symphony, the Houston Symphony, the Seattle Symphony, the Pacific Symphony, the Florida Orchestra, the Grand Rapids Symphony, the Las Vegas Philharmonic, and the Santa Barbara Symphony. He has been a guest with the St. Louis Symphony, Virginia Symphony, Phoenix Symphony, and many others.

In the world of pops, he was worked with scores of stars from Broadway, Rock & Roll, and the American Songbook, from Brian Stokes Mitchell and

Kelli O’Hara, to the Beach Boys and Wynonna, to Jason Alexander and Ann Hampton Callaway. Also a lover of opera, he conducted productions with Kentucky Opera for 18 consecutive seasons, and for 19 seasons with his own company in Chattanooga, as well as many guest conducting engagements with the Nashville Opera.

He received his Masters degree with Honors from the University of Southern California’s School of Music, studying primarily with Daniel Lewis. He received his BA-Fine Arts degree from Union College in Schenectady, NY, where he graduated Phi Beta Kappa, Summa cum laude, and an Academic All-American Baseball Player. He lives with his wife, Nora, in Signal Mountain, Tennessee.

MamBo Kings, together since 1995, are enjoying great success as America’s

foremost Latin Jazz Ensemble, and have rapidly earned a national reputation for their explosive blend of Afro-Cuban rhythms and jazz improvisation. Since their orchestral debut, Mambo Kings have appeared in Pops concerts throughout the country, performing original compositions and arrangements by pianist Richard DeLaney. Recent/Upcoming appearances with The Florida Orchestra, Detroit Symphony, Baltimore Symphony,

Dallas Symphony, Oregon Symphony, Hartford Symphony, Vancouver Symphony, and Rochester and Buffalo Philharmonics.

Mambo Kings Hot Latin Nights! takes the audience on a fascinating journey through the music of Latin America and the U.S. From the sultry melancholy of Astor Piazzolla and the burning Afro Cuban jazz of Tito Puente, to the rhythmic playfulness of jazz great Dave Brubeck and the pop strains of The Beatles, Mambo Kings will be your guide on a Latin jazz tour of the Pan American experience, featuring original orchestral arrangements and compositions of music from the U.S., Perú, Argentina, Cuba and Puerto Rico.

The Sanctuary Choir of asylum hill congregational church (ahcc) is comprised

of 67 singer/musicians who, through their talent and their spirits, provide musical leadership for Sunday worship services and community events. With 8 professional section

leaders and some of the community’s best soloists and instrumentalists, the AHCC Music Ministry is capable of extraordinary musical diversity and quality. Under the leadership of Music Director, Steve Mitchell, the choir has presented such major works as the Fauré Requiem, Mozart’s Requiem and the Solemn Vespers, Vivaldi’s Gloria, J.S. Bach’s Magnificat, a “Gospel” Christmas, the Hartford premier of René Clausen’s A New Creation. The Choir has also partnered with other area churches and arts organizations to present major works such as Morten Lauridsen’s Lux Aeterna, and the Duruflé Requiem with CONCORA and the New Haven Symphony. Recently, the choir performed with the Hartford Symphony as part of the 2012 Holiday Concerts and the 2013 Celebrate America concert at the Talcott Mountain Music Festival. In 2014, the Choir was invited to perform on the President’s Concert for the CT Conference of the American Choral Director’s Association – the only church choir to be recognized. The AHCC Sanctuary Choir also leads the annual Boar’s Head and Yule Log Festival. Now in its 48th year, this musical and dramatic celebration of Epiphany attracts more than 4800 people to five sold-out performances each January.

The choir’s latest triumphs include the Help NEPAL! Benefit concert with musicians of the HSO, as well as a presentation of “The Best of the Duke Ellington Sacred Concerts” with a full stage band, tap dancer, soloists and singers from three historically black churches in the City of Hartford – Faith Congregational, Metropolitan AME Zion, and Union Baptist. We are honored to have singers from these Sister Churches joining us for todays concert.

Classical night Fever, the popular 70’s disco Symphony Pops tribute show has been touring nationally and receiving

rave reviews since its inception in 2013. It’s a feel-good musical extravaganza you won’t soon forget! Just take a look at what’s being said by audience members and industry professionals alike:

“What a wonderful show! One show that I will never forget… The talent you guys possess is magical! …Wonderful, simply wonderful! Thanks for the fantastic night out!” – Audience Member

“Classical Night Fever was a “Funktabulous” success. The audience exploded at each show.” – Lonnie Klein, Music Director/Conductor, Las Cruces Symphony Orchestra

“This was some of the best fun (and music!) we’ve had at a concert, both onstage and off!” – Alice Kornhauser, Director of Marketing & Communications Portland Symphony Orchestra

This world-class show features four powerhouses from the Planet Funktar:

Superfly on guitar and vocals, Sir Rumpus Funkberry on bass guitar and vocals, Spanishfly on guitar and vocals and Cyclone Link Skywalker Jr. on drums and vocals. Each are highly skilled musicians and performers, but more than that, they’re on a mission – A mission to “funkitize” the masses by marrying the lavish sounds of the orchestra with brilliantly arranged disco hits by the likes of Donna Summer, The Bee Gees, Barry White, The Village People and more. They take the stage with stylin’ afros, head-turning retro costume changes and some of the coolest platform shoes this side of the Milky Way Galaxy!

Much of the 70’s disco music featured full orchestration and Classical Night Fever has carefully selected popular disco-era hits that highlight the majesty of the symphony orchestra. The show even incorporates some orchestra-only pieces, showcasing your orchestra with 70’s TV and movie theme medleys.

You’ll leave this show with a big smile on your face and a new appreciation for this great era of popular music, where dance music and the symphony collide to create something special. So get up off or your seat and bask in the lush disco sounds of your orchestra and Classical Night Fever!

Brody dolyniuK remembers mimicking voices even as a child, listening to old

records and tapes. He is a gifted, self-taught musician, capable of playing several instruments, with a particular knack for capturing the voices and mannerisms of classic characters from music, TV, and movies.

His first professional gigs were at piano bars in several U.S. cities, where he learned to charm audiences and expand his musical repertoire. With a longing to perform the music of the many rock bands that inspired him, Brody assembled Yellow Brick Road, unquestionably Las Vegas’ most successful classic rock band. Since 1997, YBR has been reshaping the casino entertainment scene by bringing a rock concert atmosphere to showrooms

previously reserved for Top-40-style lounge acts. Along the way, Brody has made numerous radio and TV appearances, and earned a spot in the finals of two national singing competitions, and even self-produced several large rock production-style shows utilizing multimedia, lasers, comedy and special effects.

In 2007, Brody lent his vocal talents by singing several tracks on the mega-hit video game Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock, and has already done several more for the new Konami game Rock Revolution.

As a devout classic rock/Queen fan, Brody’s enthusiasm, vocal ability and on-stage energy were the perfect fit for The Music of Queen show.

Community Engagement and Education

ENGAGE, EDUCATE, ENLIVEN & ENRICHEDUCATION & COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT PROGRAMSThe Hartford Symphony Orchestra Education and Community Engagement programs have proudly served more than 10,000 young people and lifelong learners this year.

HSO’s Lincoln Financial Discovery Series concerts are innovative school day concerts that illuminate orchestral music and academic areas such as Language Arts, History and Cultural Studies. This year alone, The Lincoln Financial Discovery Series will reach over 60 schools and over 6,000 students and teachers. Our April 29 concert was a joyful collaboration with Carnegie Hall called Link Up: The Orchestra Sings. Link Up, a music education program created by Carnegie Hall, united the classroom with the concert hall, giving students the opportunity to explore music through a yearlong curriculum of classroom activities and a culminating concert in which 2,400 Hartford Public Schools students in grades 3-5 performed with the HSO.

Our popular Instrument Petting Zoo allows students of all ages to try their hand at playing a variety of different orchestra instruments. This year, the Zoo is undergoing a major transformation to make it more engaging and help play an important role in exposing future musicians to instruments for the first time.

HSO’s Symphony in School Ensemble program uses small chamber ensembles to engage the community with interactive, educational, and collaborative performances. Performances in 2015 have taken place in over 30 schools and throughout the community, and has served over 3,500 students and adults in Unionville, Farmington, Vernon, Windham, Manchester, Hartford, Windsor, Bristol, Colchester, Newington, Barkhamsted and Avon.

Musical Dialogues, sponsored by Travelers, brings live, instrumental music to new segments of the Greater Hartford community and beyond through free performances featuring an array of diverse musicians and conversations with the artists. Performance venues from recent seasons have included Hartford Public Library, CT Historical Society, CT Science Center, Billings Forge, Charter Oak Cultural Center, Hartt, and New Britain Museum of American Art.

The Musicians Care Project is a community engagement program which provides live, interactive musical experiences to people whose healthcare needs prevent them from taking part in a traditional manner. By presenting small chamber music performances on site at healthcare facilities, patient-participants and their caregivers are given the opportunity to shift their focus from diagnoses and health concerns to the beauty of music by engaging with musicians and the music they perform.

For more information on these and other educational and communityengagement programs offered by the Hartford Symphony Orchestra, please visitour website www.hartfordsymphony.org/education
