In the presence of many Kuwaitiheritage as well as Western jazzlovers, Al-Shaheed Park audi-

ence recently enjoyed a mixture ofArabic rhythms and Jazz music atthe Arabic Youth Festival organizedby LOYAC’s Academy forPerformance Arts (LAPA) at thepark’s amphitheatre. The first partof the concert included a perform-ance by Ghazi Al-Mulaifi accompa-nied by Ma’youf Mejalli musicalband, which was founded in 1948and specialize in Kuwait marinefolklore. The second part of theconcert included a charming per-formance by Kuwait folkloric singer,Salman Al-Ammari accompanied bya folkloric dance which was per-formed by Al-Mass company.

ABCKcelebratesanniversary

The American Business CouncilKuwait (ABCK) celebrated its33rd anniversary with a black

tie gala at the US Embassy. The event

featured many dignitaries including USAmbassador Lawrence Silverman andAustralian Ambassador JonathanGilbert. ABCK Chair Dr Juliet Dinkhakicked off the evening with a briefintroduction about ABCK, highlightingthe organization’s many achievementsover the past year and its upcomingevents. She then introducedAmbassador Silverman who providedremarks on the strong bilateral rela-tions between the State of Kuwait andthe United States.

The Takween Library inaugurated the story andstorytellers conference on Sunday. It was spon-sored by the American University of Kuwait, in

the presence of the novelist and founder of the libraryBothayna Al-Essa and the president of the AUK, Dr TimSullivan. In her opening speech titled “Once upon a..”,the novelist Al-Essa said “Once, I remembered thinkingthe absence of imagination could be the root of all evilsin the world.

“We sometimes find human beings who can kill aman because he is simply incapable of imagining puttinghimself in his place. How can we understand oppression,fanaticism, and hatred in the presence of imagination,the bridge that connects both sides with each other?Will the world remain the same, if we all abide by ourmoral duty, to imagine?”

Essa quoted the words of Ghassan Kanafani “Theyjudge you because they do not know you.” But how canthey know you without imagination, without the abilityto walk your own steps, to make themselves heroes inyour own story, what the story does, it gives us the abil-ity to understand the other, rather than judge him. “If wewant to understand someone, we usually ask, what is hisstory? All of our side conversations, all our dreams, ournightmares, and all that we are looking for in art and lit-

erature is almost the same, we always want the story,because we want to understand,” she noted.

A video about the Takween library was shown duringthe opening ceremony in which Essa said that the goalis to make a radical cultural change in order to make

reading become a lifestyle. “There is always an obses-sion to convince someone who does not read to be areader and transform the concept of reading into a dailyhabit in every person’s life in society.” It is worth men-tioning that the events of the conference will continue
