Through our stories, we report to you about the positive impact of our work in the community. Much of what we do is focused on making positive differences in the lives of the people we serve. It is incremental and individualized to one person and one family, but over time together we create new opportunities and possibilities for each child and person we touch. It is a process—slow and steady—but unmistakable in its results. As an organization, we are proud to say that in 2015 we achieved more than incremental changes. Dramatic changes happened at Easter Seals:

• Safe Babies Healthy Families joined our family of services in late 2015. We can now help end the cycle of abuse and prevent potential development delays by helping parents to be a support to their child.

• Froedtert Hospital and The Medical College partnered with us to open our third Project SEARCH program.

• We implemented a new evidenced-based practice to help people with mental health challenges find employment in Milwaukee and Washington Counties. Our entire workforce team placed more people with barriers to work into jobs than at any time in our history.

These are great changes creating great opportunities to do even more good in our community. These great leaps need the support of donors and friends like you. As we continue to experience greater financial constraints from government sources, your support is vital for people we serve to thrive. As always, we are grateful for your support.

Diagnosed with a developmental delay at a time when not much was known about intellectual and developmental disabilities, Mattie thrives and always pushes to better herself. She has taken on a great amount of responsibility at the Wauwatosa Adult Day Center including being Captain of the Rabbit Care Club, assisting in giving tours to those interested in Easter Seals and helping lead a number of different math and study groups. You can frequently find her smiling and telling the staff and her fellow participants that she loves them. When not in the Center, Mattie loves to venture into the community to volunteer, visit her friends and shop for her favorite jewelry.

In 2015, we offered more than 36,000 hours of intensive in-home therapy hours to 52 families.

Our Adult Day Service facilities offered 156 participants the opportunity for socialization, activities

and outings in a safe environment, while providing respite for caregivers. It is estimated that due to

caregiving responsibilities, the total retirement funds of a typical caregiver are reduced by $303,880.

A World of Possibilities Five year old Roman is a very active boy with a big family, Mom, Dad, three sisters, and a dog named Manny. There is always a lot of activity and plenty to do at their house. But when Roman first entered the Easter Seals Autism Services Program, he preferred to spend most of his time alone. Roman lives with Autism.

“When Roman started his therapy, he was a loner. He didn’t play with his sisters. He had difficulty communicating and had a high level of frustration,” said Roman’s dad, Mark.

Roman was paired with Senior Interventionist, Shannon, and began intense Applied Behavioral Therapy (ABA) therapy in his home five days a week. “This has been a big learning experience,” Mark explained. Shannon always explains things in layman’s terms so we can understand it. She has the respect of the house. You can tell she loves what she does and Roman is very drawn to her.” Roman’s mom, Stacey, agrees. “We love Shannon. We feel so fortunate that we’ve had her as Roman’s therapist. We’ve learned so much during this process. We’ve learned how to fulfill his needs.”

“Through therapy, Roman has grown 100%. There were changes right away in

his behavior. His frustration level went way down. We’ve discovered this sweet, funny,

energetic boy. And he is so smart! His future is full of possibilities.”

LIVE Hands-on, comprehensive, vital services and support to help people reach their full potential—regardless of challenges, needs or disabilities.

LEARN Programs designed to help children and adults learn—and often re-learn—basic functions, master skills needed to develop and thrive, and be sharp and active as they age.

Activities and OpportunitiesMattie is a high-energy, go-getter type of gal. At the age of 68, she has (and continues to be) a source of fun and excitement for her peers and the staff since coming to Easter Seals in 2006.

Keeping Up with Dan

Dan continually receives positive feedback on his efficiency, speed, and attitude toward others in the workplace from his fellow team members, his supervisors, and other employees throughout the hospital. When shouts of, “You have to be fast to keep up with that guy!” are heard throughout the hallways, there is no doubt that it’s true.

“He’s the hardest working man in the hospital, there’s no doubt.” This is a typical remark made by the employees at Community Memorial Hospital (CMH) when they talk about Dan Laughton. Dan is a 2014 graduate of Project SEARCH. This program builds marketable, transferable and competitive skills in young adults with the goal of employment. Dan worked in three very different internships over the next nine months and Children’s Hospital. “I worked in Environmental Services (EVS), Respiratory Care Services and Nutrition Services. My favorite part of Project SEARCH was working in Respiratory Care Services and EVS. I worked mostly on my own but I was also part of a bigger team, which I liked.”

Dan was thrilled to be offered the job at Children’s Hospital but was looking for work closer to his home, so he applied for a similar position with CMH in Menomonee Falls. When a benefits-eligible, full-time EVS position opened up at CMH, Dan was chosen to fill it. His current supervisor, Ed Deutsch, is at no loss for words when speaking about Dan’s progress and success at CMH:

PLAY Fun, healthy programs for children, adults and caregivers to relax, connect with friends and engage in constructive activities—all so necessary to living the best life possible.

The Project SEARCH internship program served a total of 26 interns, who each completed three

hospital rotations over the course of nine months. Fifty-eight hospital departments provided

training opportunities and mentors, making for another successful year.

81% of graduates have been placed in community-based employment upon completion of program.Partners include Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin, ProHealth Care Waukesha Memorial Hospital, the Division of Vocational Rehabilitation, Division of

Family Care, and local school districts.

Kevin has been with Easter Seals for over seven years and recently turned 18 years old. Kevin lives with Autism. Prior to becoming involved in our After School program and Summer Respite camp, he preferred to be alone rather than engage in social activities. With the help of Easter Seals staff, Kevin has made great strides in communicating and interacting with others. He enjoys going on walks, having fun on the computer and working on arts and crafts projects with friends. His favorite field trips are always the ones where he gets to go swimming.

Respite and Fun

Our After School Program gives children a safe place to go and allows parents and caregivers the opportunity to finish their work day. Our four Summer

Respite Day Camps ensure fun activities and outings in a safe environment for 235 participants while providing respite for parents and caregivers.

“Dan is an excellent worker—he just goes non-stop! He is fantastic. He has so much energy and definitely does the

work of two employees.”

WORK A range of training, placement and related services that help people for the workforce—because meaningful work is often the key to overcoming challenges and having a good life.
