I am very happy to see the next edition of The ISSue magazine living to its expectations this quarter.

ISS, both in Australia and internationally, is enjoying very exciting times at the moment, cementing the company’s place as one of the world’s premier facility services businesses.

As will be discussed in this edition’s Global News section, ISS has recently entered the American market through acquirement of a reputable U.S. company. This also means much celebration for all ISS staff worldwide as the company crosses the threshold into 50 countries globally.

Also reported in The ISSue is the release of the latest 2006 Annual Report, which solidifies ISS’ success and outlines the productivity of each individual country under the ISS umbrella.

In addition to ISS’ achievements abroad, the company is doing very well right here in Australia. Our growing division in

integrated facility services has seen accomplishment in the latest contract win with financial services giant AMP.

I’ve recently returned from ISS’ annual conference, which I’m please to report was nothing short of remarkable for all in attendance. The conference, taking place in Istanbul, Turkey, saw convergence of management teams from each ISS country.

“The theme of the conference was collaboration,“ Jørgen Lindegaard, ISS Global CEO, highlighted the need for all countries to help one another in pursuit of excellence in both single services and integrated facility services.

I share this sentiment on the local level and believe we are one ISS team that should network across states and divisions to deliver “best in class” outcomes for our staff, clients and other important stakeholders.

I would like to also personally congratulate Tracy Kalphas, Risk Manager for ISS WA, who was invited to Istanbul to be awarded as one of the top three Best Regional Managers for ISS globally – well done Tracy.

As will be seen in the Sales Achievements section, it is also important to note that the Security Division has been internationally recognised as a significant single service and has become a fifth pillar of the ISS house in acknowledgment of its importance and specialisation as a domain area.

To conclude, I would like to thank everyone who has contributed in the production of The ISSue magazine. Feedback from the first edition has shown much positive interest from many readers. The work put in by The ISSue team of Monika Sobota and Harry Sanna, as well as all ISS staff involved, has illustrated our company’s communicative and friendly corporate environment and I will encourage everyone to continue showing your support for this ISS initiative.

Borneo Bulletin (Brunei) – 27/04/07

Hj Wahid Hj Kula, a local Bruneian pest control foreman working for ISS Brunei, has recently become the first Bruneian to pass the eight-day Australian Fumigation Accreditation Scheme.

Hj Wahid has been an employee at ISS Thomas Cowan Sdn Bhd, the Brunei branch of ISS Global, for 15 years and is the longest serving Bruneian local in the company.

“Brunei is one of the best performing countries in Asia, where ISS Thomas Cowan operates. China and India have the fastest growing economies and we are happy with our business in Asia,” stated Martin Thomsen, Regional Director, who recently awarded Hj Wahid for his services.

The implementation of new luggage rules at Australian airports reportedly went well on its introduction, with international passengers adjusting happily to the updated security procedures.

Following a discovered terrorist plot in Britain last August, the new rules are aimed at preventing liquid explosives from being hidden in passenger luggage.

At Brisbane airport, an additional 70 security staff were hired by ISS Security Services to aid in the introduction of this new procedure.

The new laws limit liquids, aerosols and gels to 100ml each in carry-on luggage, with these items to be carried in a clear plastic bag.

townsville Bulletin – 22/01/07

Flinders Mall, one of Townsville’s most popular shopping spots, has recently sought professional help to remove a flurry of feral pigeons after many aggravated shop owners and customers complained to the City Council.

Chairman of the Corporate Governance Committee, Councilor Dale Parker, reflected on the problem.

“These birds cause millions of dollars in property damage every year and are carriers of diseases responsible for respiratory ailments, viral infections and food poisoning,’’ Cr Parker said.

ISS Pest Control has been commissioned to fix the problem, with technicians employing a number of techniques to remove and deter the pigeons.

A spokesperson for the Queensland RSPCA (Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) said that the Association was not against the operation, acknowledging the humane methods of removal at the site.

Cuppa for a cureISS offices in several locations around Australia recently celebrated The

Biggest Morning Tea, which is in support of the Cancer Council of Australia. Making donations upon entry, ISS staff then gathered en masse to sit down with a cuppa and cake, taking an hour out of their busy schedules to support a worthy cause. ISS offices were able to make substantial contributions to the day’s cause. ISS’ aid will contribute to the targeted $8 million collected nationally, helping to make a difference to the lives of patients diagnosed with cancer as well as their families, friends and carers. Support includes essential

services such as a Helpline and education programs as well as funding continued research into the causes of the disease, and working toward finding a cure. Overall, The Biggest Morning Tea was an enjoyable event for all ISS staff taking part and ISS Management are always looking for more ways to support events and charities across the country, enterprising to perform as a responsible and community-driven corporate citizen.

Terrorist incidents in Bali, New York, Madrid and London have transformed public awareness of, and concern for, the threats posed by terrorism. On 9th August 2006, United Kingdom (UK) security services interrupted a terrorist operation involving planned attacks against international aviation targets. Intelligence indicated the group were planning to board an aircraft with concealed materials that could be used to construct an improvised explosive device (IED). Analysis of the foiled London plot revealed an enduring threat to civil aviation to exploit an identified vulnerability in the technical capability of aviation security screening points in relation to liquid explosive detection. The identified vulnerability prompted the United States (US), Canada and the European Union (EU) to introduce restrictions on the amount of Liquids, Aerosols and Gels (LAGs) that could be carried on board international outbound and domestic flights.

At the time, many travellers were

confused in the face of the evolving responses of governments around the world, and the necessarily incomplete explanation of the nature of the hazard presented by LAGs. In December 2006, the International Civil Aviation Authority (ICAO) released recommended security control guidelines for screening LAGs in response. These security control guidelines recommended that member countries, of which Australia is one, implement the measures by 1 March 2007.

To provide for a more secure travelling environment, the Australian Government implemented enhanced security measures to limit the amount of LAGs that can be taken through any international screening point or newly established LAGs search areas. These changes took effect on 31st March 2007 and included restrictions on volumes of LAGs permitted to be carried through screening points as well as the introduction of random and continuous frisk searching at these points. These

measures will remain in place until such time as a technology based solution can be deployed.

As the major supplier of aviation screening services at Australian International airports, ISS Security played a vital role in the implementation of these measures. Pivotal to the success of implementing these measures were the development and delivery of an effective training program and implementation planning for the introduction of LAGs restrictions. ISS Security was heavily involved in the Government’s project to develop the training program as well as focussing resources on preparing for the implementation of LAGs in conjunction with ISS’ clients. This effort was well rewarded at midnight on 31st March 2007.

Mike Day, National Manager, Aviation, Maritime & Compliance commented on the issue.

in the months leading up to the LAGs implementation date and were very well prepared for the event. This was clearly evident by the positive feedback we have received from all our clients. Indeed the implementation went without major incident and the operational transition was seamless.”

A representative from the Department of Transport and Regional Services (DOTARS) noted the professionalism and ability of ISS Security Staff in conducting the new security procedures.

“Early last Friday morning, I

observed the departure of a very senior representative of the United States Government and party at Adelaide Airport,” he said. “Unbeknown to the screening officer, a member of the party was selected, screened and cleared. The feedback from the American was positive and she noted that screeners are doing an important job to secure the aviation industry from unlawful interference.”

ISS Security has a 30 year history in aviation security that has given it exceptional and unparalleled knowledge and experience in this field, actively participating in the aviation security

community in Australia and abroad. ISS Security is represented on several aviation industry forums in Australia including the Screener Improvement Group (SIG) and the Aviation Security Training Advisory Group (ASTAG).

ISS Security are currently the major provider of aviation security services in Australia, serving more than 20 major aviation clients.

ISS is committed to providing best practice services in the aviation security environment and strives to build a reputation for quality and professionalism.

Implementing the LAGs restrictions in March this year has reinforced the quality and professionalism of the ISS Security aviation screener and clearly demonstrated the company’s capability to implement new security procedures in an operationally seamless manner.

ISS Pest Control has provided pest eradication and treatment to various forms of pests around Australia for over ten years, with a focus in the last three. ISS technicians work hard to control every manner of pest, insect or beast, two legs to eight. From the scuttling cockroaches underfoot to the feral birds overhead, ISS Pest Control remains on the cutting edge of technology and innovation to ensure its clients’ premises remain firmly secure from unwanted pests.

With a variety of introduced bird species such as the pigeon, starling and miner running rife throughout Australia, bird-proofing has become a strong part of the business for ISS Pest Control.

Pigeons are a common pest in many areas across the country, as their roosting and nesting habits are difficult to treat and their droppings are both unsightly and can cause contamination to food and encourage other forms of pest infestation.

“Bird activity is becoming a significant issue both in Queensland and nationally for a number of commercial businesses,” says Scott Russ, ISS Queensland Sales Account Manager.

Australia has many beautiful and exotic native bird species, which are protected by law, and ISS Pest Control technicians have the training required to remain highly conscious of the types of birds that can be removed for clients.

Where baiting can often be only a short-term solution, ISS technicians have found that bird netting is the most effective

long-term treatment for these pests. Aptly named ‘stealth netting’, ISS Pest Control technicians install a net under the exposed eaves of a building, denying the birds entry to the beams and other nesting areas.

ISS’ latest endeavour is the Metcash Distribution Centre in Crestmead, south of Brisbane. Metcash is a leading distribution and marketing company with operations in the food and fast-moving consumer goods industry, that provides services to such businesses as IGA, Campbells Cash & Carry and Australian Liquor Marketers.

The job required the installation of 17,000 square metres of stealth netting

under the eaves of approximately 30 special purpose loading docks.

“This was a substantial contract to secure for our Region and for ISS Pest Control as a whole,” Russ says. “Having the confidence of experienced ISS team leaders onsite, and working with quality products from PEST IT, the overall installation was a very standard one. However, the size was an overwhelming aspect of this project, one that has not been undertaken by any other company in Australia.”

ISS Catering gets mobileISS and Meals on Wheels share great pride in their work for a very worthy cause

Meals on Wheels has been a community name throughout the world for over fifty years, providing hot meals delivered to the doorsteps of those who are unable to shop for or prepare their own food. Those breakfasts, lunches and dinners are famous for their quality and

care, giving those who receive them a restaurant-quality meal that they may enjoy in the comfortable surroundings of their own home.

ISS Catering, with its experience and skill in providing the highest quality and range of foods, is the primary supplier of Meals on Wheels in Victoria. With six sites across the state in both rural and regional areas, ISS Catering staff operate with the most innovative Food Production Systems, ensuring fast delivery and maximum quality.

Providing services to Aged Care Facilities and Hospitals, ISS Catering works with Local Councils in producing over 3,500 full meals daily. Working on a four week cyclic menu, ISS Catering staff change ingredients each season and incorporate cultural diversity and special dietary requirements.

Vicki Hodgetts, Site Manager for ISS Catering in Bayside, described her own enjoyment working on the Meals on Wheels contract.

“The personal satisfaction is knowing you are helping others in your community, enabling people to stay in their own homes longer and giving their families peace of mind, knowing that their loved ones are having someone

visiting each day and checking on their well-being and also providing a nutritious meal.”

One satisfied customer of Meals on Wheels in the Geelong district wrote in to ISS Catering, personally thanking them for their hard work.

“I cannot thank you enough for the delicious meals you send,” she said. “Not only would I never make such a variety, but I would have to buy such large amounts of ingredients at a time.”

“I am looking forward to today’s meal and I thank all the people involved in the preparation and home delivery.”

Operating under strict Food Safety procedures, meals are manually sealed and packed before being delivered in refrigerated trucks over night and throughout the day. ISS Catering also has intensive staff training methods and annual food safety and site audits.

ISS Catering, through their work with Meals on Wheels, provides services to sites in Bayside, Maribyrnong, Geelong, Whittlesea and Preston. The Production Kitchen operates twenty-four hours a day from 9pm Sunday evening to 7am Saturday morning, each week.

“The clients feel very comfortable with us,” says Vicki. “They know they can ring me, or speak to the drivers

about anything and we listen because we care. To some clients, their Meals on Wheels delivery is the highlight of their day and sometimes they just ring me for a chat.”

ISS shows off its partnership with paradise, providing services to the scenic Rottnest Island

Calm waters embrace the sandy shores of the island. Beneath the surface, a speckled haze of navy blue that the sun projects to the seabed below. Guarding the island is a formation of Moreton Bay Figs, keeping watch over the stillness and offering only the faint whistle of the wind that passes through them. Lying about the bays are haunting shipwrecks, a testament to the island’s hidden dangers, and contribution to Australian history. the location is Rottnest island, and iSS is very proud to call itself a part of this enchanting paradise.

As part of a growing division in servicing the Hotel, Accommodation, Leisure and Lifestyle industry, ISS is fortunate enough to work on many of the country’s most beautiful locations, such as Western Australia’s disarming Rottnest Island.

Following the appointment of Preferred Supplier to the Rottnest Island Authority (RIA), ISS has looked to enhance the existing facilities through delivering best practice and experience. By improving levels of service delivery, ISS seeks to raise the profile of guest comfort, providing key reasons for prospective visitors to choose the island as their preferred holiday destination in

Western Australia.Mike Carton, ISS Project Manager for

Hospitality, reflects on the Island’s popularity.“Rottnest Island, by its very nature, is

the most common local holiday destination for Western Australians, with over 500,000 visitors every year,” he says. “ISS considers this contract a platform to expand our intellectual understanding of supplying hospitality and general cleaning services, providing clients with confidence that ISS can service remote and geographically challenging environments.”

The island, located 19 nautical kilometres offshore from Fremantle, can be reached

by air in 12 minutes or by boat from Perth in 90 minutes. Upon arrival, guests are invited to choose from several comfortable accommodation sites, a variety of activity and relaxation centres and are indulged in their choice from 63 pristine beaches and 20 bays to explore.

“There’s a huge difference in working and living here on the Island,” says Tracey

Wright, ISS Rottnest Island Manager. “There are no stop signs, no lights, hardly any cars, no travel time to the beach. It’s very refreshing.”

The services provided by ISS include servicing the island’s ablution facilities, management and provision of hire services (TV’s, fans etc.) and traditional cleaning services to all administration areas.

As well as preserving the historical buildings on the island, ISS recognises the importance of conservation for the delicate local environment and ecosystem, and has taken a number of steps to minimise impact

on the area and promote environmental management. A steadfast commitment to recycling and waste reduction, on top of a well-researched approach to sustainability,

has made ISS a very island-friendly addition to the small community.

Although there is a restricted amount of permanent housing accommodation on the island, ISS has been granted five homes, enabling personnel like Tracey to be on-call when needed. All other ISS staff travel from the mainland on a daily basis by ferry. Five cars, a significant amount of the island’s

total 40, are also owned by ISS and are used to transport staff and equipment between locations.

“We really are the only cleaning service on the island, so we do almost everything,” says Tracey Wright.

“If you have ever been to Rottnest, you will see how extensive the job really is. We clean all the offices, the school, the toilet facilities and laundries, private housing, staff accommodation, back-packer inns, the old Army Barracks and the Holiday Units.”

The success of Rottnest Island as a holiday location is tantamount to ISS itself, with commitment to staffing culture and initiative programs, hospitality experience development and a heightened local community spirit all being development priorities.

ISS Management continues to take part in the RIA ‘think tank’, creating innovative strategies to ensure the island runs as productively as possible. Some implemented ISS improvements include introduction of a unique hospitality uniform for all ISS staff, carrying the logos of both ISS and the RIA. ISS has also identified an extensive industry-experienced workforce that can be mobilised from the mainland in the event of excessive sick leave or large, last-minute island accommodation take-ups.

“For all the strategic challenges that the island delivers for its staff and management,” Mike Carton says, “ISS continues to demonstrate its ability to meet strategic and operational challenges, and further demonstrate its capacity to take every service opportunity that arises.”

Rottnest Island, with its natural exclusiveness and beauty, provides a poignant example of ISS’ scope of operations and adaptability to work in distinctive and demanding environments. The island also offers a picturesque backdrop, representing ISS’ growing list of clients Australia-wide, each with their own challenges and exciting opportunities that ISS looks forward to sharing in its ambition to become the premier facility management company in Australia.

ISSafety First: Induction for starters Tracy Kalphas, Risk Manager for Western Australia and recent runner-up for ISS’ International Top Regional Manager Award, shares her experiences on ISS’ latest OHS initiative

To keep our edge as one of the state’s leaders in Occupational Health and Safety, ISS Western Australia needed to have systems in place to enhance reporting procedures and assist the management of workplace incidents to enable reduction of our injury rates.

Working towards the prevention of workplace injuries, ISS looked to develop a stronger safety awareness program for all our employees and management.

If we educated our employees before they went to site, we could minimise our injury rates simply because we would be implementing “Best Practice” into the way ISS employees conducted themselves in the workplace.

An ongoing hurdle was to deliver an induction that everyone could understand, specifically to our employees that didn’t have English as their first language.

In June 2006, work commenced writing a visual and interactive-based induction with the intent to film a variety of sections and have overhead narration.

Structuring the concept was difficult. We did not want to compromise the importance of all the areas, yet worked hard to ensure the key values and policies of the company were clearly defined.

Filming took place over three days to capture all the images and footage, with a lot of hard work and collaboration with the various ISS business units. Using all the staff from the Risk Management Division here in WA, we filmed scenarios on different sites and in different types of circumstances. This even included simulating a person slipping in a puddle of water to show how important it was to protect against public

liability. Some key areas included: working alone, electrical safety and, of course, reporting procedures.

Working with the media team and watching a project develop into something special was truly an experience. Editing here and there and ensuring that the induction flowed, whilst still capturing all the important areas, was time consuming but fun and incredibly rewarding.

The ISS induction is fully interactive and allows for a visual and verbal instruction,

including a competency test. This CD allows us to induct employees remotely, at home or onsite. It is copied and issued to all new employees for future reference at recruitment.

Our clients, old and new, believe it sets us ahead of our competitors in “Best Practice” for the area of safety awareness.

Proudly rolling out officially in October 2006, all employees are now fully inducted into ISS’ polices, procedures and Safety requirements at the recruitment stage.

Chalk the Walk is an annual event that now takes place in Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne and hosts a great number of artists, ranging from the experienced to the beginners. Once the event kicks off, artists are given exclusive artistic licence to turn the city’s pavement into the world’s largest canvas, sketching modern masterpieces with only a packet of chalk. The Chalk the Walk event raises money for the Kids on the Street Foundation, with ISS as a primary sponsor for the last three years. Through annual free supply of security services, ISS Security proudly supports this charity initiative in both Sydney and Melbourne and looks forward to the next showcase.

At Sydney’s International Rowing Regatta Centre on a brisk sunny Sunday in late May, corporate teams jogged on the spot and stretched their arms, warming up for their race. Four weeks of preparation and early morning training readying them for a gruelling two minute strain down the river in an eight-person rowing boat.

ISS, as part of its continued support for community events and causes, proudly sponsored the day’s racing. Representatives of the company were in attendance, handing out ISS caps and presenting awards to the winners of the event. Company

teams from Westpac, Lumley General Insurance, Il Pastaio and Chiswick Plumbing thanked ISS for making the day possible. Fine weather and smooth management made it an enjoyable time for competitors and spectators alike, many setting up tents and barbeques to watch the sporting event in style and comfort.

Paul Harding, ISS Compliance Manager, was there throughout the day and was responsible for presenting medals at the award ceremony. This was coupled with a short speech at the event’s conclusion.

“ISS Facility Services is proud to sponsor

this event,” Paul said. “ISS recognizes the importance of supporting children in their sporting activities.”

Organised through the Presbyterian Ladies College Sydney, Newington College and MLC School, the event is aimed at raising funds for developing young rowing teams. The Regatta also offers corporate supporters a chance to enjoy a team-building experience while encouraging community involvement.

ISS is looking to enter a team for next year’s festivities.

This year’s FMA Conference, held at the Sydney Convention Centre in Darling Harbour, was met with great praise by over 750 representatives of the Facility Management industry and its supporters. With a two day schedule full of national and international speakers, industry site visits and social networking events, the conference is considered the leading of its kind in the Asia Pacific region.

ISS, as platinum sponsors of FMA, played an integral part in the overall success of the conference, sharing the company’s extensive experience and broad knowledge base with the wider facility management community.

During the Conference, a keynote address was given by ISS Hong Kong CEO Dr Keith Futcher, which was met with great applause by everyone present. Dr Futcher, who has Doctorate in Management, focused on the importance of integrated facility services companies like ISS in today’s turbulent economic climate.

“Hedging or managing risk is now a desired shareholder value,” said Futcher

at the podium. “The fundamental driver for increased outsourcing and for integrated facility services is the business need for flexibility in an increasingly risky world.”

“The 9/11 terrorist attack in New York, the global impact of communicable disease such as SARS, or today, Avian Influenza, can bring normally healthy markets to a standstill. Where companies with the highest ratio of fixed to variable costs suffered greatly, outsourcing of facilities services is an effective means of converting

operational fixed costs to a variable. “ Joe Trimboli, Director of ecoBright

energy solutions, was one of many impressed audience members at Dr Futcher’s keynote address.

“Dr Futcher’s presentation was insightful, visionary and world class.” Trimboli said. “He was professional and very much at ease with the subject matter, pushing the bounds of management theory with his own perspective on global issues which affect us all.

“I want to thank ISS for making Dr Futcher available for this conference, I was thrilled to be part of the audience.”

ISS had a stand set up in the convention hall of the conference, exhibiting ISS’ scope of experience and informing members of the FM industry of the company’s growing list of capabilities and diverse range of clients.

One of several people proudly representing the company at the conference was Dean Campbell, ISS Commercial Director.

“We’ve had a really positive response from both existing and prospective clients, with our representatives here to answer any questions they may have about our services,” Dean said.

“The FMA Conference is a fantastic way of developing vital business relationships with other such companies in the Facility Management industry.”

Also on offer at the ISS stand was

a business-card draw, with a prize giveaway of a stylish new iPod Nano. The lucky winner, Hans Slebos, is a Healthcare Manager at Thiess Services in Queensland.

Overall, the Ideaction 2007 Conference was a huge success for all present and ISS Facility Services was proud to be a part of this benchmark annual event.
