TRACE IMARI WARE BACKIn 1675, Saga Nabeshima Fief Kiln was moved from Mt.
Nangawara in Arita to Okawachiyama in Imari, as this seemed
to be the best place for preserving the secret production
technique. Later, the guardhouse was established at the
entrance to Okawachiyama to keep
the special porcelain techniques
inside the fiefdom, with diligent
guards on duty. The Nabeshima clan
with their own techniques made
porcelain for the Emperor, the Daimyo -
the Feudal lords, and the Shogun
until the Meiji era. Presently,
the pottery is referred to as
"Nabeshima Ware." In
Okawachiyama, you can still
obse rve the po rce la in
techniques of the past which
have been maintained over the
years. Okawachiyama is still the
main producing district of traditional
and modern Imari Ware.

Nabeshima - Seiji
In Okawachiyama we hold Kiln Festivals twice a year; the "Spring Pottery
Fair" from April 1st to 5th, and the "Autumn Pottery Fair" from November
1st to 5th. Numerous potteries are sold during these festivals. At the
Spring Pottery Fair, "The World Amateur Ceramic Contest" is held
simultaneously, collecting exquisite
non-professional works. Many
ceramic lovers come in search of
fine ceramics and enjoy attending
traditional events of Nabeshima
Ware at these festivals.
