On Your Mark, Get Set Read! @ Mentor Public Library
May 26-July 31, 2016
We’re gearing up for another summer of fun
reading activities for kids, teen and adults. The
festivities will kick off Thursday, May 26, when
the Children’s Department will host a family
concert by Tom Sieling!
Mr. Sieling is a widely acclaimed singer and
songwriter from New York. His free family
program, Take a Tromp Through the Swamp,
is a humorous and action-packed participation
concert for the whole family.

Family concert, no registration is necessary!
Children from birth to sixth grade can also start signing up for On Your
Mark, Get Set, Read on May 26. Visit any MPL location to register and
get your reading log where you can keep track of the amount of time you
read or are read to for a chance to win some great prizes. We also have a
whole summer of great programs for all ages including our Move It Mon-
days at the Read House beginning June 6. Visit our website calendar or
pick up a schedule at any MPL location for more details.
Teens can sign up for Get in the Game, READ! starting May 26 for a
chance to receive raffle tickets for reading or attending a library program.
Programs throughout the summer will include art contests, mini drones
and digital fitness!
Exercise Your Mind, Read! for adults will include informa-
tive programs, concerts and chances to win prizes for reading
and attending library programs! More information on the adult
and teen programs can be found on the library website or at
the Adult Information Desk.

Huge Turnout for Shred Day!
Wow was this Shred Day a busy one!
Thanks to our partner Xpress Shredding
we collected, shredded and recycled
34,000 pounds or 17 tons of paper on
Saturday, April 16 for our 6th annual
Community Shred Day during National
Library Week! That number represents
a double amount from any previous year.
MPL Shred Day:
Saved 69,700 kWh of energy
Saved153 barrels (6460 gallons) of oil
Saved 918 million BTUs of energy
Saved 56 cubic yards of landfill space
Saved 119,000 gallons of water
Saved 289 trees

Leaders and Legacies of the Civil War @ Main
Wednesday, May 11, 12– 1 p.m. in the Garfield Room The Capture & Imprisonment of Confederate President Jefferson
Davis. Jefferson Davis fled the Confederate capital of Richmond as Union
forces closed in during the spring of 1865. His escape, capture, and
imprisonment make for a fascinating story that will be examined in this

Civil War Encore – Battle of Chickamauga, September 1863 @ Main
Thursday, May 12, 6:30 – 7:30 p.m. in the Garfield Room
Convinced that Braxton Bragg is on the run,
Union General William Rosecrans learns, just
in time, that Bragg has turned his army around
and is preparing to attack. The two-day battle
turns into a rout as half of Rosecrans’ army
flees the battlefield. A brilliant stand, however,
by Union General George Thomas, “The Rock
of Chickamauga”, saves the Federal army from total disaster. Presented by
