TAI AHOM MYTH

This thesis aims at analysing the ancient beliefs of the ethnic Tai groups that

have developed along with the social and cultural development. The method

of study is mainly by examining the myths that depict the origin of Tai Ahom

written with ancient Ahom script in Ahom language.

The study focuses mainly on the parts that relate to the traditional beliefs

regarding the origin of the world. The origin of the deities, the origin of

mankind, the origin of civilization. It also deals with the customs and the

customs and the genealogy of the kings of an ethnic Tai group that moved to

Brahmaputra valley in Assam to found a new kingdom in about 12th century

from Mau Long Kingdom which used to be in a part of Myanmar and China.

It is found that the concept of the universe theorized by the Tai Ahom reflects

the Tai Ahom’s social ideal which consists three inter-related beliefs namely:

1) Fa, the worhip of nature, ancestors, deities and kings, each of which has

different hierachies;

2) Muang, the concept that emphasises the harmony among various

communities;

3) Kwan, the concept of spirit which is an absolute entity and its power.

This system of beliefs theorized that the strong and unaffected spirit has

influence on an individual as well as society in the same degree as the

external power namely, the deities, the planets, the kings etc. Therefore, the

system of beliefs requires the harmonious relation among the Fa, Muang, and

the Kwan. The ideal is solemnized in the state ritual such as the coronation

ceremony, ect.

Besides, there is another finding. That is, the Tai Ahom myths of origin still

share the original beliefs of other ethnic Tai groups, namely, Tai Dam, Tai Yai,

Tai Mao, and Tai Nue.

In conclusion, the Tai Ahom myths of origin have explained the root of the

beliefs (or the original religions) that were the main drives of the development

in the early ethnic Tai society.

ผลการศกษาพบวาปรมปราคตไทอาหม เปนระบบความนกคดตอจกรวาลอนเปนภาพสะทอน

อดมการณของสงคมไทอาหมเอง ซงประกอบดวยระบบความเชอ 3 ประการทเกาะเกยวเปน

อนดบเดยวกน ไดแก

1. "ฟา" คอการบชาธรรมชาตบรรพชน เทพเจา กษตรย หรอระบบความนกคดตอการจดอานาจ

ระดบตาง ๆ

2. "เมอง" คอระบบความนกคดทเนนความเปนปกแผนของชมชนและความสมพนธระหวางคน

3. ขวญ" คอ ระบบความนกคดตอจตวญญาณและพลงภายในของมน ซงเปนอานาจอสระ ระบบ

ความเชอนมองวาความเขมแขง หรอความเปนปกตของวญญาณภายในมผลตอวถชวตทงระดบ

บคคลหรอสงคมทดเทยมกบอานาจภายนอก ไมวาจะเปนการบนดาลโชคเคราะหจากผฟา วถ

โคจรของดวงดาว ตลอดจนกษตรย

ดงนนจงเสนออดมคตในการรกษาความสมพนธอนถกตอง ระหวาง "ฟา" และ "ขวญ" อดมคต

นไดจาลองและแสดงซาเพอปลกฝงเปนอดมการณรฐในพธกรรมตาง ๆ โดยเฉพาะพธ

ราชาภเษก นอกจากนผลการศกษายงพบวา ปรมปราคตไทอาหมเกบรกษาความคดความเชอ

ดงเดมของไทยอนมลกษณะรวมกบไทยกลมอน โดยเฉพาะอยางยง ไทดาและกลมไทใหญ ไท

เมา ไทเหนอ กลาวโดยสรปปรมปราคตไทอาหม ชวยอธบายระบบความเชอตนราก หรอศาสนา

ดงเดม อนเปนกลไกสาคญของพฒนาการทางสงคมระยะตนของชนชาตไท
