INTRODUCTION
On the narrow gauge (762 mm gauge)sections of the Indian railways where permissible axle load is limited to 6t. To meet the requirements of these sections a locomotive ,N/ZDM5 class, B-B type, 450 HP, with axle load of 5.5t has been designed and built by CLW.
The power pack of this locomotive consists of kirloskar- cummins make diesel engine model KTA- 1150L, 6 cylinder, 4 stroke, turbocharged and cooled, set to deliver 450HP at 1900 rpm.
STRUCTURE OVERVIEW
Super structure of the locomotive is in three parts –
long hood- divided in three parts for easy assembly and removal. It accommodates power equipment and main auxiliaries like compressor and exhauster.
Drivers cabin – is sufficiently large and equips all controls , instruments and gauges.
Short hood – battery boxes and reservoirs are housed in this compartment .

DIESEL ENGINE SYSTEMS
Narrow gauge diesel locomotive NDM5 is fitted with 6 cylinders . Turbo super charged Cummins diesel engine model no. KTA 1150 L.
Main systems are : 1. air intake and exhaust system 2. fuel system 3. lube oil system 4. cooling water system

CHARGE AIR AND EXHUAST SYSTEM
Fuel oil system
The main components of the fuel system are : 1. gear pump 2. cooling kit 3. pulsation damper 4. filter screen 5. governor 6. weight assist plunger 7. throttle shaft 8. shut down valve 9. PTD injector 10. water separator
Lubricating oil system
KTA 1150L diesel engines have forced feed lubricating oil system with low lubricating oil protection device .
The lube Oil system is four fold:- To lubricate all the moving parts in an engine
. To help in seal combustion chamber from the
crankcase. To clean the engine by picking up foreign
particles To cool the parts that it contacts.
Lubricating
The main components of the lube oil system are :
1. lubricating pump 2. lube oil full flow filters 3. bypass filter 4. lube oil cooler 5. piston cooling nozzle/jets
Cooling water system
The cooling system is with side mounted radiators. Cooling system is pressurized by 7PSI cap and vacuum valve .
Major components :- 1. radiators 2.radiator fans
CONCLUSION
Hence the study of power pack of a NDM5 diesel locomotive engine consists several systems praising for the better working of engine to get maximum output and for maximum working life.
We have learned about the maintenance of engine and various operations of locomotive .
