RFID Network Infrastructure Delivers Accurate, Actionable Data;

Scalable Implementations

O V E R V I E W

The Reva Tag Acquisition Processor (TAP) family of productsenable scalable deployment of RFID for production operationsin any environment and deliver the accurate, actionable datathat enterprises need to create ROI from RFID implementations. The TAP 331 is built to deliver the benefits of RFID NetworkInfrastructure at facilities that require modest numbers ofRFID readers. The TAP 331 is well suited to deployments atretail stores, branch offices, satellite processing centers, temporary operations, small manufacturing plants, RFID startup or pilot sites and other facilities where a small numberof read points are currently required.

Reva TAPs are the industry’s first intelligent RFID devices tocombine real-time adaptive control of readers, location-awaretag data processing, and standards-based data services forthe applications that consume RFID data. TAPs are a purpose-built, standards-based network appliances that delivercost-effective, system-level performance to support RFIDadoption across a wide range of vertical markets. TAPs provideseamless data integration with enterprise applications, predictable operation of RFID enabled facilities, and includea powerful management console for configuration andcommissioning of RFID systems. The Reva ManagementConsole is compatible with all TAP models enabling a common remote management and configuration platformfor distributed sites regardless of size and complexity.

TAPs employ complex scheduling algorithms that work withRFID readers to deliver optimal levels of facility tag datacapture in production environments. By auto-configuring allthe readers in a facility and exercising the rich set of Gen2parameters available from leading reader vendors, the RevaTAP provides the RFID network infrastructure coordinationnecessary to achieve the data integrity enterprises need.

The Reva TAP 331 is the right RFID Network Infrastructurechoice for multi-site production deployments where modestnumbers of readers are required. TAP 331s provide a seemlessupgrade path as device needs expand at individual facilities.Scalability is achieved by either adding additional TAP 331sto share the reader and processing load or upgrading the installation to a TAP 701 model that uses the same configuration file and management console.

• Coordinates and controls both fixed and mobile RFIDreaders via TCP/IP over wired or wireless LANs in orderto minimize interference and optimize RF utilization.

• Intelligently processes high volumes of acquired tag dataat a site-wide level, correlating tag reads and utilizinguser-defined locations to provide consolidated andmeaningful tag observation data.

• Provides RFID data services to client applications thatleverage the acquired tag data, isolating them frominteractions and physical changes at the tag identificationlayer, and providing them with high quality, application-ready data.

• Provides scalability and load sharing with redundancy againstunexpected single system failure situations throughautomatic distribution of services in multi-TAP deployments.

• The Reva Management Console enables users toremotely configure, deploy, and monitor site operationsat each facility. Includes visual device placement, devicehealth and centralized reader firmware upgrades.

The Reva TAP is designed for use in customer facilitiesrequiring multiple reader deployments including manufacturing plants, distribution centers, retail stores, entertainment venues, and healthcare environments whereprocessed RFID data can be leveraged by multiple localand enterprise applications.

• Reader control and coordination. The TAP operatesRFID readers in production settings as a coordinated and synchronized network. As the focal point for readercontrol, the TAP provides a layer of intelligence thatfacilitates deployment, coordinates read operations, andautomates reader management, reducing service andlabor costs and ensuring increased return on investment.

• RF optimization. RFID deployments often necessitate the simultaneous operation of readers. The TAP usessophisticated techniques and algorithms to control andcoordinate how RFID readers use frequency, time, space, and transmit power. The TAP optimizes RF utilization tominimize interference-related disruption and maximizetag read capacity in dense reader environments.

• Tag Data Processing. The TAP provides high-availabilityprocessing and storage of tag data and intelligentlyresolves the locations associated with tag observations.Locations are resolved based on a user-definable facilitylayout combined with calculations and observations ofthe RF coverage of antennas.

• Tag data smoothing and filtering. The TAP manages thepotentially redundant data generated by multiple readersdetecting the same, or subsets of the same, tags in thesame location. This enables a significant reduction in theamount of redundant data generated by the RFID networkat a particular facility.

• Advanced location resolution. In addition to directlyassociating read points with locations, the TAP candetermine tag location by comparing and correlating the responses of the tag to multiple readers. Sophisticatedlocation algorithms correlate tag observations to thecorrect dock door, work station or other business locations in dense reader environments where cross readsare present. Thereby eliminating the cross read issuewithout the need for costly and impractical shielding inreal world deployments.

• Multiple location perspectives. The Reva ManagementConsole enables users to define multiple location models, known as perspectives, based upon the same physicalfacility. This provides users with a means of supportingmultiple client applications that may have diverse tagdata requirements.

• Data service interfaces. The TAP presents dataservice interfaces toclient applications whichconsume RFID data.Typical clients mightinclude EnterpriseApplication Integration(EAI) platforms, businessintelligence and datastorage systems, as well asapplications that performspecific functions like ERP,supply chain planning, asset tracking and inventory management.

Figure 2: The Reva Management Console allows organizations to remotely manage and monitorRFID-enabled facilities.

• Failover and service redundancy. A system of multipleTAPs at a facility automatically elects active and backuproles for reader control and each enabled data and net-work service to deliver real-time 24x7 failover and redun-dancy.

• Platform capabilites. The TAP platform includes a pre-packaged, open Java environment on which edge applications can be hosted. Using a library of APIs forsensors and other devices, Reva’s partners and customershave built streamlined workflow applications that runon the TAP and leverage the performance, abstraction, security and redundancy capabilities that come standardwith every appliance.

The Reva Management Console is a Windows-based softwareapplication that enables users to configure Reva TAPs on afacility-wide basis. The Reva Management Console allowsusers to describe the facility graphically, place RFID readers, antennas and other devices on the facility map, calculate asite configuration, and deploy operating parameters to theTAPs in the network. Once a facility is up and running ona TAP, the Management Console can be used to remotelymonitor the health of readers and other devices residingthere, tagged object activity and data collection status togive local operators and distributed administrators 24x7confidence that their RFID operations are executing properly.

Centralized reader firmware upgrade capabilities in theManagement Console allow administrators to managereader upgrades remotely and streamline the process ofmaintaining distributed device installations. Additionally, low level events and triggers using general purpose input/output (GPIO) functions on readers and stand alone PLCscan be manipulated using the well defined event handlingtools which are part of the management console package.
