Graphic Symbols Page
What is it?
o a tactile page which shows commonly used areas, lines, and
point symbols
o exactly one meaning in the entire volume
Location
o in preliminary pages, immediately after the Special Symbols
page
Include
o area, line, or point symbols which are used consistently and
repeatedly in a volume (more than 2 times)
o land and water texture, north arrow on maps
o measurement bars
o alphabetic keys such as State or ISO country abbreviations
Slide 5
Transcriber's Notes Page Transcriber's Notes page must include a statement about the
use of the Graphic Symbols page. The new guidelines offer up
two possibilities.
o Graphic symbols that are used throughout this volume are
shown on the Graphic Symbols page, braille page p____.
OR
o Common graphic symbols used in this material are shown and
explained on the Graphic Symbols Page.
Slide 6
Graphic Symbols Page--Format Right side page(s), single sided
Centered Heading
o GRAPHIC SYMBOLS USED IN THIS VOLUME
Centered Heading on continuation pages
GRAPHIC SYMBOLS (cont.)
o no blank line before or after continued heading unless a
category heading follows
Category Headings
o cell-5 headings, initial capital letters
Slide 7
Graphic Symbols Page--Format 1. Areas
o 1" wide, 1/2" high
o texture starts in cell 1, dot 1
o braille description starts in cell 6, with runover in cell 8 (6/8)
2. Lines
o 1" wide
o line starts in cell 1, dot 2
o align vertically with dots 25 of the description
o braille description 6/8
3. Point Symbols
o centered within the first 4 cells of the line
o braille description 6/8
Slide 8
Graphic Symbols Page--Format 4. Alphabetic Keys
o 2-3 cell key (only 2 cell keys in Nemeth code)
o followed by 1 blank cell, then the description
o start in cell 1, runovers in cell 3
5. Numeric Keys
o always use literary numbers for numeric keys
o followed by a space, then the description
o start in cell 1, runovers in cell 3
Slide 9
Example of a Graphic Symbols Page
Slide 10
Graphic Symbols Page-- Listing Order (also applies to keys)
areas, line types, and points in a logical order (within their
categories)
o most significant to least significant
o alphabetical if no logical order exists
keys, when a logical order can be determined
o left to right
o top to bottom
o clockwise starting at top
keys, when a logical order cannot be determined
o use alphabetical order
numeric keys
o always list in numeric order
Slide 11
Anatomy of a Tactile Graphic 1. title
2. label
3. caption
4. transcriber's note
5. key
6. graphic
7. source
Slide 12
Anatomy of a Tactile Graphic 1. title of graphic
o centered heading
blank line before and after*
o repeated centered heading on continuation pages
okay to shorten (see page 5-6)
no blank line required before or after*
do not add (cont.)
o okay to add a title for clarity--no TN indicators are necessary
* See page 5-9, section 5.3.5 for rules on when to leave blank
lines on tactile graphics.
Slide 13
Anatomy of a Tactile Graphic 2. label of graphic
o such as Figure 2 or Fig. 2.1
o starts in cell 7, runovers in cell 5
Slide 14
Anatomy of a Tactile Graphic 3. caption
o labeled diagram with a caption
caption follows one space after label
o unlabel diagram with a caption
insert identifier
Picture:
Map:
Diagram:
start in cell 7, runover in 5
the caption follows one space after the identifier
Slide 15
Anatomy of a Tactile Graphic 4. transcriber's note
o use opening TN indicator
o start in cell 7, runovers in 5
o closing TN indicator follows
end of key
OR
end of transcriber's note if no key
o notes of < 7 words can be enclosed in TN indicators and
embedded
Slide 16
Anatomy of a Tactile Graphic 5. key
o start in cell 7
If no transcriber's note precedes the key, then insert a TN
indicator
o Key: OR
o Key in 2 columns:
o a blank line
o the list of areas, lines, points, and alphabetic and numeric
keys
o closing TN indicator follows last item in the key
Slide 17
Anatomy of a Tactile Graphic 6. graphic
o the touchy feely part
7. source
o follow Braille Formats for placement
o blank line before the source because if follows a graphic
o preferable for source to be on same page as graphic
source after charts is 5/5
source after other stuff is blocked 4 cells to the right of the
previous line
Use your judgement here!
o no blank line required after source
Slide 18
Purpose of a Tactile Graphic What features of the print diagram are essential?
o read the surrounding text
o read the caption
Does the diagram provide information not provided in the text?
Is the reader required to make observations?
Can the diagram be simplified?
Parts omitted?
Parts consolidated?
Areas distorted?
Supplemented with a TN?
Slide 19
Single Page Key with Single Page Graphic Not really a complex
diagram, but key and
diagram won't fit on a
single page.
Title, TN, and key will fit
on a single page.
Map will fit on the facing
page.
Slide 20
Bus Routes--Key and Tactile Diagram
Slide 21
Anatomy of a Complex Tactile Graphic When each key fits on a single
page
1. title
2. label
3. caption
4. transcriber's note
5. key
6. graphic
7. key, graphic, ...
8. source
When any key cannot fit on a
page
1. title
2. label
3. caption
4. transcriber's note
5. graphic
6. multipage key
7. graphic, key, ...
8. source
Slide 22
Definition of a Complex Diagram >5 areas
>5 line styles
>5 types of point symbols
too many labels
too much explanation required to understand diagram
three-dimensional information
information spread over a large area
Slide 23
Tactile Diagram Goals 1. title, label, caption, TN, key, tactile, and source on one page
2. key and tactile on one page
3. key on one page (left side)
tactile on facing page (right side)
4. tactile on one page (left side)
multipage key on facing and following right side pages
5. multipage tactile with single or multipage keys
Slide 24
Saving Space 1. Move heading, label, caption and transcriber’s note to the
previous page.
2. Delete labels by describing them in the transcriber’s note
3. Delete repeated heading
4. Make the graphic smaller
Slide 25
Saving Space 5. Delete blank line between “Key:” and the key listing.
6. Present key in 2 columns
7. Delete blank line between text and graphic
8. Delete running head *
9. Move “Key:” to the previous page
* Some agencies may not allow this.
Slide 26
Multi-page Key with Single Page Graphic Single Sided Volume
o key won't fit on one page
o graphic is a left side page
o key pages are right side pages
EXAMPLE: Simple map of North America

Sections Transcriber's Note:
o The following three
diagrams show the
main blood vessels of
the human circulatory
system. The first
diagram is an
overview. A dashed
line indicates the point
of separation in
diagrams two and
three. The second
diagram is the upper
body and the third
diagram is the lower
limbs.

Layers Multi-page Key with Multi-
page Graphic
if the key for any layers
won't fit on a single page:
o all graphics are left side
pages
o all key pages are right
side pages

Slide 47
Layers Transcriber's Note
o This map is
divided into three
parts (political, land
use, and resources)
and shown over six
maps. The first part
is a political map of
Southwest Asia. The
second part, land
use, is divided into
two maps, and the
third part, which
shows the
distribution of
resources is divided into three maps. Countries that are too
small to see are ISRAEL (west of JORDAN), LEBANON (west of
SYRIA), KUWAIT (southeast of IRAQ), and in the Persian Gulf
is QATAR and the island state of BAHRAIN. Each map is shown
on a left-hand page followed by its key on the right-hand
page(s).
