Dr. Om Prakash Sharma Director, PCE
It’s a matter of great delight that Department of Computer Engineering is releasing their
newsletter “Poornima Tact Express 2016” with great zeal & zest.
Dear students, if you set your goal high and decide not to stop till you reach there, you will
certainly succeed. Thinking high fills you with vigour and determination. You develop an
unprecedented self-confidence due to the dimension of your goal. Your goal must be
accompanied by a well structured plan. Every dream precedes a goal. Remember goals are like
magnets and they attract the things that make dreams come true.
Obstacles minor or major, accompany every task. It is therefore your response to the obstacles; you have to face
on the way to the accomplishment of the task which determines the degree of your success. In order to overcome
your weakness regarding excuse or procrastination, you will have to get into the habit of taking responsibility.
Break down the tasks into several sub-tasks. If you do so, the task will not weight very heavy on your mind. You
can finish them one by one as they will look manageable.
I extend my greetings to the team of Department of Computer Engineering and all the students for
showcasing their department activities through this newsletter. Ever tried. Ever failed. No matter. Try again. Fail again. Fail better." - Samuel Beckett
Jai Jai Poornima Sansthan! Jai Hind!
Dr. S. M. Seth Chairman, PGC & PJ Foundation,
Chairperson, Poornima University (Former Director, NIH, Roorkee)
I am glad to learn that “Computer Engineering” department of “Poornima College of
Engineering” is going to publish the 20th issue of their biannual newsletter “Poornima Tact
Express”. Such newsletters provide an appropriate medium of sharing information and
creative skills of students and faculty on relevant issues.
Twenty first century is an era of knowledge & skills. It is imperative to inculcate inventive
thoughts and proper vision among young generation for ensuring progress and development of the
country. Education is the means by which the youth is trained to serve the cause of social and
economic needs. There is no substitute to hard work, but hard work accompanied by smart work is the key to
excellence in the present world of cut-throat competition.
For our young budding technocrats, I would like to quote Muhammad Ali “Champions aren’t made in gyms.
Champions are made from something they have deep inside them a desire, a dream, a vision. They have to
have the skill and the will. But the will must be stronger than the skill.”
I congratulate all the faculty members and students who have worked hard to bring out this Newsletter with
interesting and useful details. I wish the editorial team all success in their endeavors.
Jai Jai Poornima Sansthan! Jai Hind!
I t gives me immense pleasure to know that the Computer Engineering Department of
Poornima College of Engineering is enlightening its students of all the happenings in a nut-
shell through their Even Semester newsletter “Poornima Tact Express” for session 2015-2016.
The future holds tremendous promise for the Institute and to achieve the goal, the Department
should follow a two-way approach: nurture, and grow. NURTURE an outcome oriented
performance work environment by emphasizing and supporting all team members and GROW our
capacity in achieving the set goals. For doing so, we should be thoughtful and strategic in our
working & manner and aiming to fulfill the student’s ambitions.
Through this newsletter I heartily congratulate the Computer Engineering Department of Poornima
College of Engineering in their achievements throughout the academic semester and wish that they continue
winning accolades for the Poornima Foundation.

Cloud Computing Today And Tommorow Every day we deal with ‘Cloud’, we hear
about ‘Cloud’, we work with ‘Cloud’ but
we are not able to understand what cloud
actually is, to give a brief introduction
cloud is “it is the facilitation of
information technology as a service
through Internet”. But this may sound a
bit confusing, so here is the real thing
about cloud- Cloud is the up gradation of
internet or the rise of internet as few years
ago when we talked of Internet we only
talked of “Surfing” and we just surfed on the internet but with cloud we are
not just surfing the internet but now we are storing our data we are taking
server and machine on rent of some big companies or even of some small and
we are taking their infrastructure for our use.
Again a misconception arises in general people that cloud is just used
for storing data somewhere on internet. Unlike the above cloud provides
firstly platform, secondly infrastructure and thirdly software i.e. to provide
service platform as a service (PAAS), infrastructure as a service (IAAS),
software as a service (SAAS). By cloud we can use any machine or any
software or any infrastructure to our very own computer with the help of
Internet but that software or that infrastructure is not actually on our com-
puter and by this the main part of cloud comes the “Virtualization”. We can
use it only in one condition that we have to pay them according to the time
we use that machine and that is why this service is called “Pay as you go”
and that is the main reason why we Indians use it less as we don’t want to pay
a single for using any software

Career Options for Computer
Graduates
This article examines the various career
options on offer for students who have suc-
cessfully passed their computer
engineering courses. Traditionally
computer engineering students can pick jobs
in the software scheme of things that in-
cludes the whole gamut of roles from programming, testing, software
development and analysis.
Application development - The development of the mobile phone and
distinct operating systems has opened a whole new world of employment oppor-
tunities to not just engineers but anyone with a keen eye for design and detail. In
the war of the operating systems we see applications, popularly known as ‘apps’
being designed.
Software Testing has become practically a sub-domain of its own with
more and more private institutions offering courses in software and product
testing.
Cyber-security – Technology has its negatives as well, doesn’t it? With
more and more transactions going online and the rise of online shopping portals
and electronic money transfers; the risk of transaction passwords being stolen,
secure databases being hacked and identity thefts are not just plots from movies
but very scarily real and possible.
Product design – Ever wondered why Apple products are so
insanely successful? They blend simplicity and ease of use with cutting-edge
technology inside them. All major technology firms invest heavily in
research and development and they are continuously innovating to make ‘the
next big thing’. Computer science engineers with a specialization in hardware
technology and design have a great career path ahead in IT Product Design.

A fine-grained finger
tracking solution As wearable devices grow and
screens shrink, a team of Indian-
origin researchers has developed a
new sonar technology that allows you
to interact with smarwatches by writ-
ing or gesturing on any nearby sur-
face -- a tabletop, a sheet of paper or even in mid-air.
Called FingerIO, it tracks fine-grained finger movements by turning a
smartphone or smartwatch into an active sonar system using the device's
own microphones and speakers. Because sound waves travel through
fabric and do not require a line of sight, users can even interact with a
phone inside a front pocket or a smartwatch hidden under a sweater sleeve.
You don't need to instrument your fingers with any other sensors. FingerIO
can accurately track two-dimensional finger movements to within
eight-mm, which is sufficiently accurate to interact with mobile devices.
Using FingerIO, one could use the flick of a finger to turn up the volume,
press a button or scroll through menus on a smartphone without touching
it, or even write a search command or text in the air rather than typing on a
tiny screen.
The researchers employed a type of signal typically used in wireless
communication called Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing. Their
algorithms leverage the properties of OFDM signals to track phase
changes in the echoes and correct for any errors in the finger location to
achieve sub-centimeter finger tracking. The researchers are now working
on how FingerIO can be used to track multiple fingers moving at the same
time and extending its tracking abilities into three dimensions by adding
additional microphones to the devices.

An Overview of Big Data Hadoop
Hadoop is a free, java based
programming framework that support
the processing of large data sets in a
distributed computed era. It is a part of
the Apache project sponsored by
Apache software foundation. Hadoop
makes it possible to run applications
containing thousands and terabytes of
data like facebook, at a faster rate. This
technology is also used to find a specific pattern as a result to the large
amount of data.
Dong cutting, Hadoop’s creator named this framework after his
child’s stuffed toy elephant. The current Apache Hadoop ecosystem con-
sist of Hadoop kernel , MapReduce , the Hadoop Distributed File Sys-
tem (HDFS) and a number of related projects such as Apache Hive , H
Base and Zookeeper.Hadoop is almost completely modular, which
means that you can swap out almost any of its components for a different
software tool. That makes the architecture incredibly flexible, as well as
robust and efficient.
Hadoop is not really a database rather it stores data and you can
pull data out of it but there are no queries involved like SQL. It is a data
warehousing system so it needs a system like MapReduce who
actually process it. MapReduce runs a series of jobs with each job essen-
tially a separate java application that goes out into the data and starts
pulling out information as needed. Users of Hadoop don’t have to stick
with just HTFS or MapReduce. For its Elastic Compute Cloud Solution,
amazon web services has adapted its own S3 file system for Hadoop.
