NORTH COUNTY NEWS;

DOESN'T ANY ONE RUN TOUGH COURSES ANY MORE?MATSEBULA FINDS THE ANSWER. HOW COME IT TOOK SO LONG?

For years people have been praying for decent weather on thesame day as North County News. This year their prayers wereanswered. Unfortunately - or perhaps more wisely - so, too, weret h o s e o f M o s e s M a t s e b u l a .

The 33 year-old African student, who attends Briarcliff 'sKing s College, said he was running for God. "I praised him thewhole way. I was praying the whole race." Apparently, thee v e n t u a l w i n n e r h a d a b e t t e r i d e a .

Matesbula beat back a pack of Taconicites to win in 33:35with Lou Guerra, who hung on gamely until the last mile, takingthe silver in 33:47, and the grand "old" man. Bob Hermesch, in atJ 4 ; 1 D ,

Newcomer Mary Tolson had a decent 43:46 to best Karen Johnsonby almost three minutes, with the ever-present Denise Uva takingt h e b r o n z e i n 3 4 : 1 6 .

Grunt Hill, as usual, tested the mettle of the hardy who wererewarded with improved times over previous years, and anyquestion as to the severity of NCN in comparison to South Salemtwo weeks later saw those running the latter coming in withsimilar times, despite the fact Salem was doused with a bundle ofwarmth. No doubt similar weather in Yorktown would have added atleast a minute or more to those which were recorded.

And a word of congratulations to those at NCN - three inparticular - who showed they were more than just reporters bystepping into the fray and giving it their best. Chris Cornell, the only true sports department representative, ran 55:52; RickPezzullo, news, found a new respect for those who do what theydo as he ran 67:56; and Editor - as in Editor-in-Chief - NancyHaggerty made no excuses (and why should she?) for her 75:11which left her behind all who ran, but out in front of those'whod i d n t .

Race director Marc Oxman was not too disappointed at thealmost 200 entries, but since many of the entrants were notclub members, and since prez John H. had made a special appeal inlast issue s newsletter, there was no one doing cartwheels-especially when only two volunteers were on hand to work thefinish line. How about it gang? We're flogging the too few we dohave. Complete results on page 19.

Dear Ms, I.aw,

At the Mahopac High School senior awards nightI was presented with the Debbie Schramm Memorial Award. I am writing this note to thank theTaconic Road Runners C^ub for their sponsorshipof the award and to tell you how pleased and honored I am to be the recipient: the stipend will usefully contribute to my college fund.

Assuming that the Taconic Road Runners will beinterested in my running accomplishments, I haveenclosed a recent newspaper articlc which is alsopartly personal and biographical.

Very truly yours,Jeffrey Cassone

Myles O'RhodesThe note read: "Dear Daddy, am going for a brisk

ride in the county. See you at Sunshine. Love,Sybil."

Thus the legend began...this year the legend continued. April 28th, 7am Saturday morning: 18 starters. The weather even at that early hour was warm.

Early fast starters were Paul Fetcher followed byDave Farquar. A group of six - Frank DeLeo, JoeDugan, Ken Huttunen, Don Villeneuve, RichardLudin and Myles O'Rhodes - trailed them with therest of the troops spread out behind.

Survival is the norm for Sybil. However this daysurvival became a more difficult goal due to theever-climbing temperature. The starting sub 80'sgave way to 90-1- degree temperatures as the runners struggled through the half-marathon point.

The compensating factor about Sybil is that it isa glorious course, scenic and challenging, It is a racerife with tradition. For any Taconic runner who hasalready met the challenge of the "classic distance",Sybil presents the unique opportunity to go "ultra"in our won backyard. It is the one step beyond.Like its kid brother, the marathon, Sybil lulls youup to the wall, then allows you to slam into it, atyour own speed.

This year's race contained several interesting subplots: the best is the story of Bob Kantor's incredible hat trick: the Sri Chinmoy Rainbow Marathonon Friday, followed by Sybil on Saturday and thenby the Yonkers Marathon on Sunday.

This year's winner, Frank DeLeo from Brooklyn, racked up his seventh ultra win in besting the 1990Sybil field. An international flavor was added byRichard Ludin from Montreal, Quebec who was ourtrailer in this year's race, but who helped to provideus with imported post-race refreshments - if you cancall almost red-hot beer refreshing. Both of our earlyleaders succumbed to the heat and ended up asDNFs, as did the only woman starter.

Speaking as a committed Sybil participant, I offerthe challenge to all TRRC members who have evercontemplated Sybil to not miss the 1991 race.
