"There are so many folks who walk in front of our office," explained attorney Virginia DeCosta, who purchased the former manor, which is lo- cated at 519 S. G St., eight years ago with her husband, Marc Ross, and turned it into the of- fices of the DeCosta Law Firm. The former two- story residence was built in 1889 and is now listed on Tacoma's Register of Historic Places. "They would come and knock on the door to tell us, 'Something is wrong with your tree.' If there was any way to save it — or any part of it — we would have. We care very deeply about roots — no pun intended — and history." According to the couple, they consulted with City officials and local arborists to confirm the tree could not be saved. "We wanted to make sure that the tree itself kind of continued to live, even though it had died," added Ross. It sounded like a job for local painter, illus- trator, and chainsaw sculptor Bruce 'Thor' Thor- steinson (pictured), who prefers the name 'Thor From Earth.' "We just didn't want to dump it," noted Ross. "It deserved better than that." The tree was cut down earlier this month. Thor started to create the sculpture within days, climbing atop scaffolding of ladders and planks to use a chainsaw and grinder to de-bark the tree and carve out the shapes, and a leaf blower to clear away the sawdust. In the end, his cre- ation will depict a cluster of sea turtles, a school of fish swimming through sea grass, dolphins, crabs, and star fish — a scene that speaks to De- Costa's Portuguese-Hawaiian roots "I started working on it on my birthday," said Thor while he took a break on Wednesday afternoon. "It's not normally how I spend my birthday — debarking a log. But I wanted to get started because I knew it was going to be a big job and require a lot of time. It's a maple tree that's been dead for more than a year. It's as hard as a rock." In addition to the sculptures near North 11th and Anderson Streets, Thor recently created a 10-foot-tall cedar Viking for the Everett Sons of Norway. Thor said he spent most of last year on the road, traveling to New Mexico, Georgia, and Pennsylvania to participate in a circuit of art shows. "I'm a chainsaw gypsy," he added. "Who knew you could tour the world with a chainsaw?" Thor hoped to finish the sculpture around Thanksgiving. "It's hard to say. There's still a lot of work to be done. I just have to keep at it." DeCosta and Ross are pleased with Thor's work so far. "We have had a lot of people stop by to look at the progress," said Ross. "They are excited to see what we are doing here." EditorFor some 100 years, a towering maple tree

stood prominent outside the former Yuncker Manor near Wright Park in Tacoma. That be-gan to change nearly two years ago when locals started to notice the old tree was dying.

"There are so many folks who walk in front of our of ce," explained attorney Virginia DeCosta, who purchased the former manor, which is lo-cated at 519 S. G St., eight years ago with her husband, Marc Ross, and turned it into the of- ces of the DeCosta Law Firm. The former two-story residence was built in 1889 and is now listed on Tacoma's Register of Historic Places. "They would come and knock on the door to tell us, 'Something is wrong with your tree.' If there was any way to save it — or any part of it — we would have. We care very deeply about roots — no pun intended — and history."

According to the couple, they consulted with City of cials and local arborists to con rm the tree could not be saved.

"We wanted to make sure that the tree itself kind of continued to live, even though it had died," added Ross.

It sounded like a job for local painter, illus-trator, and chainsaw sculptor Bruce 'Thor' Thor-steinson (pictured), who prefers the name 'Thor From Earth.'

DeCosta recalled seeing one of Thor's wizard-and-dragon chainsaw sculptures near North 11th and Anderson Streets, and wondered if

they could hire Thor to create art from their dy-ing tree.

"We just didn't want to dump it," noted Ross. "It deserved better than that."

The tree was cut down earlier this month. Thor started to create the sculpture within days, climbing atop scaffolding of ladders and planks to use a chainsaw and grinder to de-bark the

tree and carve out the shapes, and a leaf blower to clear away the sawdust. In the end, his cre-ation will depict a cluster of sea turtles, a school of sh swimming through sea grass, dolphins, crabs, and star sh — a scene that speaks to De-Costa's Portuguese-Hawaiian roots

"I started working on it on my birthday," said Thor while he took a break on Wednesday afternoon. "It's not normally how I spend my birthday — debarking a log. But I wanted to get started because I knew it was going to be a big job and require a lot of time. It's a maple tree that's been dead for more than a year. It's as hard as a rock."

In addition to the sculptures near North 11th and Anderson Streets, Thor recently created a 10-foot-tall cedar Viking for the Everett Sons of Norway. Thor said he spent most of last year on the road, traveling to New Mexico, Georgia, and Pennsylvania to participate in a circuit of art shows.

"I'm a chainsaw gypsy," he added. "Who knew you could tour the world with a chainsaw?"

Thor hoped to nish the sculpture around Thanksgiving. "It's hard to say. There's still a lot of work to be done. I just have to keep at it."

DeCosta and Ross are pleased with Thor's work so far.

"We have had a lot of people stop by to look at the progress," said Ross. "They are excited to see what we are doing here."

Strong import container volumes drove the Port of Tacoma's October volumes up 17.5 per cent over the same month in 2013, Port of Tacoma of cials an-nounced Thursday. It marked the eighth consecutive month of growth.

Full containerized imports grew 15 per cent year-to-date through October to 662,972 TEUs (20-foot equiv-alent units). Exports also posted gains, up eight per cent to 463,818 TEUs, and domestic volumes improved

three percent to 390,139 TEUs, according to Port of Tacoma of cials. Tacoma handled 181,112 TEUs in October, boosting year-to-date volumes to 1.7 million TEUs. For the year, Tacoma's container volumes are up 11 percent. October traditionally signals the end of the peak shipping season, when retailers build up inventory in preparation for the holiday shopping sea-son. Tacoma's numbers also continue to re ect addi-tional volume from larger vessels and shipping line alliances.

In other cargo news, grain exports continued to boom, up 80 per cent year to date to 3.2 million short tons. Grain exports have returned to normal following last year's historic lows on the back of a bumper crop that is boosting volumes further. Auto imports, inter-modal lifts and breakbulk cargo also posted gains, while log exports continued to decline as demand in China lagged. More information is available online at portoftacoma.com.

Posted online Tues., Nov. 18Photo Courtesy City of TacomaThe City of Tacoma is accepting bids from

contractors to complete a project that will bring a range of safety improvements for pedestrians and bicyclists around Sheridan Elementary School, according to a legal notice published this week in the Tacoma Daily Index.

The project most recently dates back to April 2013, when City of cials announced they would partner with Sheridan Elementary School, lo-cated at 5317 McKinley Ave. E., and use a near-ly-$380,000 grant from the Federal Highway Administration to complete the project, which aims to enhance students' walking and biking routes to school by installing curb extensions at crosswalks, new sidewalks and curbs with ADA-compliant ramps, and secure bike racks at the school. City of cials celebrated the proj-ect by hosting a kick-off event that included a neighborhood cleanup, bike rodeo, free lunch, free helmets and ttings, bike repairs, and bike giveaways.

The deadline to bid on the project expires at 11 a.m. on Tues., Dec. 16. A pre-bid meeting will be held at 9 a.m. on Thurs., Dec. 4, at the Ta-coma Municipal Building, located at 747 Market St., Room 148, in downtown Tacoma. More infor-mation is available online at tacomadailyindex.com.

Posted online Weds., Nov. 19Tacoma City Council approved a resolution

Tuesday appointing four people to the Tacoma Arts Commission.

The commission consists of 15 Tacoma resi-dents who volunteer to serve as arts advocates and provide leadership in supporting and en-hancing the arts for the bene t of Tacoma and its residents. The commission’s primary respon-sibility is to create policies to support the ongo-ing development of arts programs and projects in Tacoma, such as the funding of artists and arts organizations to provide services for the Tacoma residents, Tacoma Arts Month, and oversight of public art as part of the City of Tacoma’s Mu-nicipal Art Program. Commission members are appointed by Tacoma City Council’s Economic Development Committee and con rmed by Ta-coma City Council.

In September, the City of Tacoma issued a call for applicants to ll three At-Large positions, and one position representing Tacoma Public Education. The deadline for applications expired on Fri., Oct. 10. Tacoma City Council’s Economic Development Committee interviewed the candi-dates during a public meeting last month. The committee then forwarded its recommendations for appointments to the full city council for nal con rmation.

On Tuesday, Tacoma City Council appointed Heather Conklin to the Tacoma Public Educa-tion Representative position to serve a three-year term to expire on Dec. 31, 2017, and Kareem Kandi, Wanda Thompson, and Lynn Wilmot-Stenehjem to At-Large positions to serve three-year terms to expire on Dec. 31, 2017.

Posted online Tues., Nov. 18Photo Courtesy Bates Technical CollegeGovernor Jay Inslee honored Dan Eberle

(pictured), a career advisor and the disability support services coordinator at Bates Techni-cal College in Tacoma, with the state's highest award given to a person with a disability. Eberle received the prestigious Governor's Trophy in Memory of Carolyn Blair Brown at a ceremony held at Microsoft Conference Center in Redmond in October.

The trophy is awarded to a Washington state resident with a disability who signi cantly em-powers individuals with disabilities in the com-munity and in the workforce. Eberle earned this award because of his achievements in support of those with disabilities.

"Dan is an extraor-dinary advocate in our community, and a tireless supporter of our students, in-cluding those with disabilities. We are proud of Dan and honored to have him acknowledged for this prestigious rec-ognition," said Bates Technical College President Dr. Ron Langrell.

Eberle was a founding member and chair of the Washington State Department of Social and Health Services' Disability Initiative from 1993 to 1995. A natural leader and champi-on for people with disabilities, Eberle was invited to serve as a consultant to ensure the Husky and Cheney Stadiums were built accessible to people with disabilities.

From 1999 to 2008, Eberle served on the Gov-ernor's Committee on Disability Issues and Em-ployment. For more than 20 years, Eberle has not only served as an advocacy leader himself, but also has intentionally worked to foster and expand disability advocacy leadership statewide, wrote Esther Bennett, chief of eld services at the Division of Vocational Rehabilitation, and Joe Ann Fritsche, resource development volun-teer at the Tacoma Area Coalition of Individuals with Disabilities, in their nomination letter for Eberle.

In addition to Eberle, the event honored sev-en public and private employers statewide for their exemplary work recruiting, hiring, retrain-ing and promoting individuals with disabilities. Washington businesses, agencies, organizations and individuals submitted the nominations, and a panel of committee members and volunteers selected award winners.
