RFP documents prepared by City staff show quali- fied arborists must be able to conduct tree risk assess- ments, tree appraisals, and provide consulting advice for City projects; have vast experience working in ur- ban areas and for municipalities; be able to work on- call and in concert with City of Tacoma staff and con- tractors working on behalf of the City as needed; have and maintain a current International Society of Ar- boriculture (ISA) Certification, ISA Tree Risk Asses- sor Course and Exam (TRACE) certification or Tree Risk Assessment Qualification (TRAQ), and American Society of Consulting Arborists (ASCA) registry is pre- ferred; be experienced in expert testimony and be pre- pared for potential litigation and/or a public hearing. The City issued the RFP in October, according to a legal notice published in the Tacoma Daily Index (see "City of Tacoma seeks consulting arborist," Tacoma Daily Index, Oct. 28, 2015). The budget for the three-year contract is estimated at $75,000. The deadline to respond to the RFP ex- pired on Tues., Nov. 10. A contract is expected to be awarded by the end of this year. Metro Parks Tacoma is working with Tacoma Public Schools, the City of Tacoma, Tacoma Hous- ing Authority, the Greater Metro Parks Founda- tion, and other community partners to develop plans for the Eastside Community Center, which will include an event space, an aquatics center, and a variety of multi-use activity spaces. The facility will be built on the campus of First Creek Middle School, located at East 56th Street and Portland Avenue. Metro Parks Tacoma and a growing group of government, private sector, and non-profit partners continue to discuss op- tions for building, operating, and maintaining a facility that provides healthy and safe activities for youth and residents. "We have collected lots of feedback from com- munity partners, including a steering commit- tee of local residents and leaders," said Andrea Smith, a member of the Metro Parks Tacoma Board of Commissioners who serves on the proj- ect's Executive Committee. "There is still a lot of work to be done, but this is a good time to stop and give the public the opportunity to look over the work done so far, share comments, and ask questions." The open house will be held on Weds., Nov. 18, between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m., at Salishan Fam- ily Investment Center, located at 1724 E. 44th St., in Tacoma. ARC Architects, which has led the design team, will share visuals of the work completed so far. Metro Parks Tacoma managers also will be available to provide updates about conversations with community organizations re- garding programs that might be offered at the center.
