FOREWORD BY TAN SRI DATO’ SERI MOHAMED JAWHAR HASSAN

Dear Valued Contributors,

The year 2014 saw several states devastated by one of the most severe floods seen in the country for

quite some time. Tens of thousands of families were displaced and many more were trapped in areas

surrounded by water while others were housed in schools that were converted into temporary flood relief

centres. Many families were faced with shortage of food and medicines. As flood water subsided, the

victims faced a scene of destruction - homes had been destroyed, utilities infrastructure damaged and

public amenities wrecked.

Media Prima Berhad (MPB), through the Tabung Bencana NSTP – Media Prima (which is administered by

the Board of Trustees of Media Prima – NSTP Humanitarian Fund) responded swiftly to assist the flood

victims as we have often done when natural disasters occurred in the past. Though flooding on such a

massive scale was not anticipated, preparations for the regular monsoon season began as early as October

when we worked with our partners to prepare emergency relief supplies. Our employee volunteers

brigade was also placed on standby mode to be deployed as and when required.

The first flood incident occurred in Penampang, Sabah on 17 October 2014 and our volunteers were

dispatched with flood relief items to assist victims in the state. The Tabung Bencana NSTP – Media Prima

was also reactivated to collect funds in anticipation of similar floods that occur during this time of the

year. Leveraging on the strength of its integrated media platforms, MPB also dedicated considerable air

time and space on our television, radio, print, out-of-home media and online services to create awareness

and collect contributions for flood victims.

Through your contributions, over RM6 million was raised for the Tabung Bencana NSTP – Media Prima.

We were able to quickly utilise the funds to provide flood relief in the form of food and household supplies

as well as medical support in collaboration with our partners. Post flood assistance continues through

various programmes such as building tube wells to provide immediate potable water, repair works for

places of worship, assistance to schools and rebuilding homes.

The purpose of this report is to inform you of the various programmes undertaken to-date and how your

contributions benefitted thousands of victims.

We are truly humbled by the outpouring of generosity that has come from caring individuals and

organisations in support of those affected by the floods. We thank you for your kind generosity. Your

contributions were fully utilised to provide assistance for flood victims whilst logistical costs were borne

by us and our partners. Our hearts continue to go out to the flood victims and our heartfelt gratitude is

extended to everyone involved in providing rescue and relief assistance throughout this period.

Media Prima through its Media Prima-NSTP Humanitarian Fund is highly regarded for our humanitarian efforts for victims of natural disasters and other global conflicts. We are always amongst the first to respond to disasters both locally and abroad. Your generous contributions have enabled us to help thousands of people in the aftermath of disasters.

OUR INVOLVEMENT

Tabung Bencana NSTP – Media Prima (administered by the Board of Trustees of Media Prima-NSTP Humanitarian Fund) was first established on 1 October 2009 to assist earthquake victims in Padang, Sumatra. Since then, the fund is at the forefront of relief efforts for victims of natural disasters and other humanitarian crisis in Malaysia and abroad. Leveraging on the strength of our integrated media platforms, we are able to effectively generate awareness and enable the public and other corporate citizens to donate funds to assist the victims. We allocate significant amount of airtime and space on television, radio, print, out-of-home media and online for this purpose.

OUR APPROACH 1. Monitoring and Assessment

We constantly monitor incidents related to natural disasters through our extensive news and editorial teams located throughout the country as well as our correspondents abroad and in tandem with government disaster response and civil defense agencies. Based on the information received, the Media Prima-NSTP Humanitarian Fund (through its Donation Committee) assesses the severity of a particular disaster and identifies the appropriate response required to assist victims.

2. Response and Assistance

Disaster response efforts vary depending on the nature of disasters but typically consist of reactivating the Tabung Bencana NSTP – Media Prima to generate funds to assist victims. We will also engage local authorities to identify suitable locations and the actual number of victims to ensure relief supplies provided are adequate and properly distributed. We endeavour to send supplies primarily through the Briged Sukarelawan Media Prima. In situations where we are unable to have safe access to the victims, we seek assistance from the Armed Forces, Malaysian Civil Defense Department, Fire and Rescue Department of Malaysia, Royal Malaysia Police and other NGOs that are better equipped for such missions.

3. Post Flood Rebuilding

We will continue to work with local authorities to assist victims of natural disasters in post flood rebuilding efforts. Our objective is to help victims return to their ordinary lives as soon as they can.

2014 - 2015 FLOODS In December 2014, heavy seasonal rains affected many parts of Malaysia and caused severe flooding in Kelantan, Terengganu and Pahang while other states like Perak, Perlis, Johor, Selangor and some parts of Sabah and Sarawak also experienced floods due to the heavy rainfalls. A quarter of a million people were displaced. Kelantan was the worst-hit state with 160,000 evacuees. Damages to public as well as private properties was extensive. The government estimated that more 2,000 homes were destroyed or damaged.

FLOOD RELIEF MISSIONS 1. Distribution of food relief supplies to victims

We initiated several flood relief missions to ensure that victims receive aid that is urgently needed by them. Locations were identified based on information gathered from Majlis Keselamatan Negara, Jabatan Pertahanan Awam Malaysia (JPAM) and Jabatan Kebajikan Masyarakat. Briged Sukarelawan Media Prima – NSTP led the missions bringing items such as food, hygiene kits, towels and other daily necessities. Media Prima also collaborated with the Armed Forces, JPAM, Royal Malaysian Police and the Fire Rescue Department for victims in areas that were not accessible.

LIST OF RELIEF CENTRES AND OTHER AREAS RECEIVING ASSISTANCE

The following areas were selected based on feedback and guidance from the local authorities that include Jabatan Kebajikan Masyarakat, JPAM and community leaders. We endeavour, when possible, to send relief items to communities that received little or no contributions at the time of mission.

POST FLOOD REBUILDING 1. Building tube wells to supply potable water and medical assistance.

We collaborated with Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia and Universiti Malaya, two premier higher institutions of learning that focuses on health and wellbeing of flood victims. The programmes focused on prevention of water borne diseases like cholera, typhoid, leptospirosis, diarrhea and skin disease through static clinics set up in flood hit areas. The programme also covers building of tube wells to provide potable water to victims as many of the infrastrucures had been damaged. Communities here depended on wells as their source for water even before the floods. The tube wells built came with motorised pumps and filteration system. Tests were conducted to ensure the water quality is safe for consumption.

4. Building new homes, repair works and other community initiatives As at 28 February 2015, government authorities have identified 2,592 houses that were considered total loss (i.e. collapsed, swept away or requires massive repair) and have to be rebuilt, with 1,600 units in Kuala Krai district in Kelantan alone. In support of the nation’s post-flood rebuilding efforts and as part of the rebuilding phase of its flood relief initiatives, funds from the Tabung Bencana NSTP-MPB will be used for the rebuilding of homes for the flood victims programme undertaken by the government. We are also working closely with the respective state governments to identify post-flood rebuilding initiatives that will benefit communities.
