DemonstrateabilitytoplaymusicselectedfromLevelOneoftheBastienPianoRepertoire.RequirementsforEntranceintoUpperDivisionStudies(3000level)Attheendofthesophomoreyearallmusicmajorswillbeexpectedtodemonstratemasteryofthevocal,piano,orinstrumentaltechniquesdescribedbelow.TheVocalProficiencyExamination(VPE),thePianoProficiencyExamination(PPE)andtheInstrumentalProficiencyExamination(IPE)willbeadministeredbytheappliedmusicfaculty,andshouldbeperformedduringthescheduledjuryexamweek.Musicmajorswillberequiredtoattempttheproficiencyoftheirmajorspecializationandthepianoproficiencyattheendofthefourthsemesterofstudy.ProficiencyExamRequirementsRequirementsfortheVPE(VoiceMajors):1. 3. Repertoire -Demonstrate theability toperformtwomemorizedpiecesof contrastingmusicalstyles. Repertoire must be memorized and performed at an acceptable tempo and anappropriatestyle.
4. Improvisation-Demonstratetheabilitytosightreadandimprovisebyplayingstanzasofahymnwithoutstopping. Studentsarenotrequiredtomemorizethehymn. Treatthestanzas inthefollowingmanner:a. knowledgeandplayingabilityofmelodicpercussioninstruments.d. Strings:Shifting,fundamentalarticulation,trillsandvibrato,basicstrummingandchordal
accompaniments. 5. Arepertoirelistofworksstudiedinthefirstfoursemestersofinstrumentalstudyshouldalsobe
submittedattheIPEjuryhearing.ThislistwillbekeptonfilewiththeresultsoftheIPE.Thestudentwillbeguidedthroughvocal/piano/instrumentalstudywiththesegoalsinmind,andmoststudentswillbeabletosuccessfullyachievethesegoalsbythefourthsemester.IfthestudentispreparedtotaketheVPE/PPE/IPEpriortothefourthsemester,theexammaybetakenatanearlierjurywiththeinstructor’s approval. However, if the applied music faculty believes that the student has notdemonstratedproficiency in anyof these areas, the studentwill be required to do so at a later date(usuallythefollowingsemester).StudentsmustbeenrolledinaclasswithaSAGUmusicprofessororanapprovedmusicprofessorbytheuniversityinAppliedPiano/AppliedVoice/AppliedInstrumentalforthesemester inwhichthepiano/voiceproficiency/instrumentalproficiencyisattempted. Performance-determinedbytheSeniorRecital.AppliedMusicPolicyRegistration-Registrationforprivatelessonsisacommitmentforthesemester.NOfinancialrefundscanbemadetostudentsmissingprivatelessonsforanyreason.Studentsarenotpermittedtoregisterformorethantwo(2)credithoursofappliedlessonpersemesterwiththesamemusicinstructor.Credit -Eachcredit involvesa30-minuteprivate lessonandaminimumof fivehoursofpracticeeachweek.Twocreditsinvolvea60-minuteprivatelessonandaminimumof10hoursofpracticeeachweek.Scheduling-Itisthestudent’sresponsibilitytofillouttheappliedmusicscheduleformatthebeginningofeachsemester.Aftertheinstructorandstudenthaveagreedonaconvenienttimeforthelesson,basedontheschedulesuppliedbythestudent,thestudentisexpectedtobefaithfultothatschedule.Oncemusiclessonsareassigned,schedulescannotbechangedwithoutpriorarrangementswiththerespectiveinstructor.TheinstructorisNOTobligatedtochangealessontimefortheconvenienceofthestudent.Ifthe student isunable to takea lessonas scheduled, the studentmust contact the teacheras soonaspossible.(AppendixB).Make up lessonswill only be given at the discretion of the individual instructor. The student is heldresponsibleforlearningthemusicpriortothelesson.Theinstructorisnotobligatedtoteachalessonifthestudentisunprepared.Grades-Basiccriteriaforgradesareasfollows:attendance,attitude,studentparticipationinthelesson,practice,musical progress, jury performance, and recital performance. Aminimum of FIVE hours ofpracticeperweekforeachonehourcreditwillberequired.Continuouslackofpracticeandpreparationforprivatelessonsmayresultinsuspension.(AppendixB).Attendance-Southwestern’son-campusprogramisdesignedasanin-classlearningexperience.Inthis

-9-type of instructional setting, the ability to pass examinations and complete outside projects is only apartialmeasureofthestudent’sknowledge,skills,understanding,andappreciationofthesubjectmatter.Therefore,studentsarerequiredtomaintainregularandpunctualclassattendance.LowerLevelMAP:Ifanyquestionarisesconcerningastudent’sattendance,theMusicDepartmentwillenforcetheattendancepolicycontainedintheAcademicPoliciesdocumentlocatedinBlackboard.A student who is absent from a lesson is totally responsible to make the appropriate advancedarrangementswiththefacultymemberforpossiblemake-upwork. Thefacultymemberwillhavetheprerogativetodetermineifastudentmaymake-upanylessonduetoastudent’sabsencealongwiththetimeframeinwhichtheworkmustbecompleted.However,nopointreductionwillbeimposeduponastudent’sfinalgradeforabsenteeism.Therewillbenoprovisionformake-uplessonsduetothenumberofappliedlessonsbeingtaughtbytheinstructorperweek.Make-uplessonswillonlybegiveniftheinstructormissesthelesson.Tardiness-Studentsmissingfifteenminutesofa lessonwillbecountedasabsentforthat lesson,andeverythreetardiesacquiredinclassesthatmeetthreetimesaweek,andeverytwotardiesacquiredinclasses thatmeet twice aweekwill be considered as an absence incurring the samepenalty. Recitalattendanceisrequiredofallmusicmajors(MAP1000RecitalAttendance).Musicmajorswillberequiredtoattendaminimumofseventypercent(70%)ofallrecitalsheldoncampuseachsemester.Non-musicmajorsenrolledinappliedmusicwillberequiredtoattendaminimumofthreerecitals.GeneralStudentRecitalsareheldeachMondayat4:15p.m.inBurkeHall,locatedintheHageeCommunicationCenter,beginningthesecondweekofclasses.Recitalswillincludeperformancesbymusicstudentsandfaculty,musicdepartmentforums,andlecturesbyspecialguestsandmusicfaculty.Eveningrecitalsareheldatvarioustimesthroughoutthesemesterandwillbeadvertisedinchapel,postersintheHageeCommunicationCenterandaroundcampus.Attendanceisdeterminedbystudentssigninganattendanceslipwhichwillbedistributedateachrecital/performance.

II. RecitalPerformance
General Student Recitals—Performance and Scheduling General recitalswill be open to allappliedstudents. Nomorethantenstudentswillbeallowedtoperformonanygivenrecital.Preference will be given to upper division students and to those who have not met theperformancerequirements.Studentswhowishtoperformmorethantwiceareencouragedtodoso;however,thesestudentswillonlybeallowedtoperformonageneralrecitaliftheprogramis not full.Allmusicmajorsmust perform in the general recitals scheduled throughout thesemester.UnlessthisrequirementiswaivedbytheappliedlessoninstructorwithapprovalfromMusicDepartmentChair.

III. RecitalHearings
AllstudentswhoareplanningtogiveaSeniorRecitalwillberequiredtogiveahearingoftheplanned recital prior to the scheduled recital date. This hearing is to determine the student’sreadiness to present the recital publicly. This recital hearing will be held on any Mondaydesignatedas“RecitalHearings”.Thestudent’saccompanist(s)[whenapplicable]arerequiredtoattendthishearing.TherecitalhearingwillbepresentedbeforeacommitteeoftheSAGUmusicfacultywhichwillincludethemusicdepartmentchair,student’sinstructorandothermembersofthemusicfaculty.
RecitalhearingswillbegradedPass/Fail.Studentsmustpasstherecitalhearingbeforetherecitalperformancewillbescheduled.Studentswillbegivenonlytwoopportunitiestopasstherecitalhearing.Inordertopasstherecitalhearing,studentsmustnotonlydemonstratetalent,butmustalsodemonstratetechnicalproficiencyintheselectedinstrumentorvoice.StudentsmustalsopreparerecitalswhichfollowtheguidelinesforseniorrecitalsintheSAGUMusicHandbook.Apassinggradewillbegiventothosestudentswhoareabletodemonstratetechnicalproficiency,completememorization(ifapplicable)oftheappropriateselectedliterature,asenseofstyleinregard to thedifferentperiods fromwhich themusichasbeen chosen, and correctdiction inregardstoalllanguagesstudied(vocalmajorsonly).
IV.JuniorRecitalsAllWorshipArtsmajorsandMusicPerformancemajorswillberequiredtogiveaJuniorRecital
asoneoftherequirementsfortheirdegree(MAP3200JuniorRecital).WorshipArtsmajorshavetheoptionofaNightofWorshiporperformingavocal,instrumentalorpianorecital,subjecttotheapprovaloftheirprimaryinstructor.AJuniorRecitalwillinvolveaminimumof30minutesofactualperformance.Themusicfacultywilldeterminewhethertherecitalmeetstherequirementfor the degree prior to the performance. This judgment will be based upon interpretation,technique,memorization(ifapplicable),andgeneralmusicianship.Iftherecitalisnotaccepted,itmustberepeated.
V. SeniorRecitals
AllgraduatingMusicmajorswillberequiredtogiveaSeniorRecitalasoneoftherequirementsforadegree(MAP4010SeniorRecital).WorshipArtsmajorshavetheoptionofNightofWorshipor performing a vocal, instrumental or piano recital, subject to the approval of their primaryinstructor.ASeniorRecitalwill involveaminimumof50minutesofactualperformance. Senior Recital Policies -Degree recitals will be recorded upon the student’s request. VoiceCurriculumGuide
The exact nature of applied voice instruction for the non-major will be left to the discretion of theindividual instructor. However,thevocal facultywillberequiredtoteacheachappliedvoicemajor inorder toprepare thestudent for theVocalProficiencyExamination (VPE)and for furtherstudy. Eachinstructorshouldfamiliarizehimselforherselfwiththefollowingguidelinesforchoiceofvocalliterature.FirstYear-LowerDivisionStudyThe freshman year is a year of assimilation and new learning and the new voice student is probablyunawareofmanyfacetsofthevocalarts.Emphasisshouldbeplacedonthefollowingaspectsofvocalstudy: 1. Thenatureofbreathcontrol.2. Propervocalsupport.3. Correctdiction.4. Beginningperformanceexperience,bymeansoftheweeklyrecitals.5. StudyofsongsinEnglishandItalian,withanintroductiontoGermanLieder(allsongsshouldat
leastbeattheleveloftheFirstBookseries.Freshmenwhoaremoreadvancedmaybegivenariasfromoperasororatorios;however,theseshouldbechosenfrommorelyriccomposers,e.g.Handel,Mozart,andearlyItalianarias.AriasfromVerdi,Wagner,orPuccinioperasshouldnotbegiventolowerdivisionstudents.
6. TakeMUS2212DictionforSingers.7. Duringthefreshmanyear,atleast6songs(or12forthosestudentselectingtotakeatwo-hour
lesson) should be memorized and prepared to performance standards. This repertoirerequirementshouldincludeasignificantstudyofbeginningclassicalandsacredliterature(thegreatestportionof the study). GospelorContemporaryChristianMusic, andmoredifficultselectionsfromBroadwayrepertoiremaybestudiedinadditiontotheclassicalrequirement.
SecondYear-LowerDivisionStudyThesophomoreyearisayearofcontinuedstudyandthevoicestudenthasbynowbecomemorefullyawareofthevocalartsandhisorherownrepertoireandvoicing.Theareasofbreathsupport,dictionandperformanceshouldagainbeemphasized. Thesecondyearofcollegestudyshouldbefilledwithmuchnewrepertoireandnewlanguagestudy.Thefollowingareasshouldbeintroduced: 1. GermanLieder,ifnotbegunintheFreshmanyearshouldbebegun.2. IfMUS2212hasnotbeentakenitmustbetakenbeforetheendofthesecondyearofvoice
studyinordertobeeligibletotaketheVoiceProficiencyExamination.3. Artsongsshouldbecentraltothestudywithsongsfromthesecomposers(orsimilarstyles):

FirstYear-UpperDivisionStudyNote: If the student did not pass all areas of theVocal Proficiency Examination (VPE), the third-yearstudent will be required to enroll in lower-division study for additional semesters until all areas ofproficiencyaresuccessfullyattained.StudentswhopassaportionoftheVPEwillberequiredtoenrollinanadditionalremedialsemesteratlower-divisionlevel,butwillonlybetestedonareasinwhichproficiencywasnotattained.Bythejunioryear,thestudentknowswellthecapabilitiesanddeficienciesofhisorherownvoice.Duringthejunioryear,thestudentisrequiredtogiveajuniorrecitalofsacredselections(pleaseseenumber6inthissectionforfurtherdetails).ThestudentshouldhavestudiedEnglish,German,andItalianartsongs,andsomeoperaandoratorioarias.Thefollowingareasshouldbeemphasized:1. Perfecting modern performance styles as well as attempting to become more historically
informedintheperformanceofearlyvocalmusic.2. StudyofFrenchartsongs.3. IntroductionofFrenchIPA.4. Opera,oratorio,andmoredifficultsacredliteratureshouldalsobeemphasized,withcontinued
studyofmoredifficultGermanandEnglishartsongs.5. At least 12 songs should be memorized during the junior year. Though gospel songs and
ContemporaryChristianMusic(CCM)songsmaybeutilizedinlessons,thesesongsshouldbeusedprimarilyforpreparationfortheJuniorRecital.
6. Duringthejunioryear,thevoicemajorwillberequiredtoperformajuniorrecitalofsacredorgospelandContemporaryChristianMusicselectionsofatleast30minutesworthofmusic.Thefirsthalfofthejuniorrecitalwillconsistofmoretraditionalgospelandsacredselections,whilethesecondhalfwillbedevotedtomorecontemporaryChristianselections.
SecondYear-UpperDivisionStudyThesenioryearisusuallyfilledwithpreparationfortheseniorrecital(whichisthefinalexaminationforexit from the SAGU voice program) and should be a continuation of the study of good performancepracticesandmusicalstyle.Otherlanguagescanbeintroduceddependingonthestudent’sprogress,butitisreasonabletomaintainthefourmajorlanguageswithadditionalrepertoire.Aminimumof45minutesworthofsongsshouldbepreparedtoperformancestandardsfortherecital.Eachseniorvoicerecitalshouldideallyincludethefollowing:1. AsetofItalianartsongs(whichshouldnotbe,ideally,chosenfromanyoverusedanthology,e.
g.,24ItalianSongsandArias,etc.);2. AsetofGermanLieder(whichshouldideallybechosenfromasinglecomposer’sliterature(e.

9. All questions regarding recital etiquette and recital programming, which are not expresslyoutlinedintheSAGUMusicHandbook,shouldbeaddressedtotheRecitalCoordinatorwellinadvanceoftherecitaldateinordertoallowthestudentandinstructorsufficienttimetocorrectanyproblematicsituation.
VocalJuryRequirements1. Thosestudentswhoarevoicemajors(lowerdivision),andareenrolledfor1hourcredit,willbe
requiredtogiveajury.Thestudentwillberequiredtoperformoneselection,preferablyinaforeignlanguageoramoredifficultEnglishartsong(atleastattheleveloftheFirstBookseries).Allvoicemajorswhoareenrolledfortwohourscreditwillberequiredtoperformforthevocaljurytwoselectionsofcontrastingstyleandlanguage.
2. Thosestudentswhoarerequiredtotakethevocalproficiencyattheendofthesophomoreyearmust be prepared to give an extended jury performance. Each student will demonstrateproficiency in all areas listed in themusichandbook. Completionof the course,MUS2212DictionforSingers,willbesufficienttofulfilltheDictionrequirementoftheVPE.IfthestudentandinstructorwishtotaketheVPEbeforethecourseiscompleted,thestudentwillberequiredtotakeavocaldepartmentexam,demonstratingproficiencyinforeignlanguagesingingpriortobeingallowedtodemonstratetheotheraspectsoftheVPE.
3. Thosestudentswhoarenotvoicemajors,butaremusicmajors takingvoiceasasecondaryappliedstudy,mustgiveajuryperformanceatthelevelofotherlowerdivisionstudies.
4. Those students who are not voicemajors, but are takingMAP 1201 applied voice for their ownpersonalenrichment,mustfirstexemplifytalentandmusicianshipatthelevelofotherlowerdivisionvoicemajors.Thejuryrequirementwillbelefttothediscretionoftheprimaryinstructor;however,thestudentwillberequiredtogiveajury.

RecitalScheduling1. Eachinstructormustrequiremusicmajorstoparticipateinrecitalseachsemester.Thisrequirement

4. StudentswhoareperformingshouldbeexpectedtodressaccordingtorecitaletiquetteasoutlinedintheSAGUMusicHandbook.Instructorsmustmaketheirstudentsawareofthisexpectation.

Instructorswill lowerastudent’sdailyaverageforanyassignedrecitalperformancewhich ismissedwithoutvalidreason.EachrecitalperformancewillbecalculatedintotheAppliedMusicgrade.Studentsmustnotifytheirinstructorforcancellationofarecitalperformance.Ifthereisavalidreason,therecitalperformancemaybemadeup,butonlyatthediscretionofthe individual instructorandtheRecitalCoordinator.Missedperformancesshouldmakeasignificantimpactonthefinalaverage.
6.
