‘I loved this book. It’s an easy read, and the characters are relatable, butthe message – essentially carpe diem – is deep. Highly recommended.’

‘If you enjoyed reading A Man Called Ove and The Unlikely Pilgrimage ofHarold Fry, you will definitely like this book. It touches on a hugespectrum of topics, not just focusing on what you would imagine by itstitle.’

LITTLE CONSTRUCTIONS

An irate woman bursts into the best gun shop in the town of Tiptoe Floorboard, helps herself to a Kalashnikov rifle and sets off in a taxi on her mission ofretribution. So begins this kaleidoscopic, surreal and enigmatic tale of dark deedsin a small town. At the centre of the novel lies the Doe clan, a closely knit familyof criminals and victims whose internal conflicts and convoluted relationshipspropel this simultaneously funny and terrifying story. In a voice that is by turnschilling and wickedly funny, the narrator documents their struggle to make andmaintain connections with each other, and, weaving back and forth in time, examines what transpires when unspeakable realities, long pushed fromconsciousness, begin to break through.

DOMINO ISLAND

Desmond Bagley was a multi-million-copy selling author of 16adventure thrillers, all of whichare still in print. His transitionfrom unskilled printer’sapprentice, aircraft engineer, miner, nightclub photographer andradio scriptwriter to one of theworld’s most respected thrillerwriters is legendary. Travelling toalmost every continent toresearch his exotic storylines, hewas described by the Times as a‘craftsmanlike thriller novelist’,whose stories are as excitingtoday as when they were firstpublished.

‘Like a dream come true – an undiscovered Desmond Bagley novel …and it’s a great one!’ Lee Child

Bill Kemp, an ex-serviceman working in London as an insuranceinvestigator, is sent to the Caribbean to determine the legitimacy of anexpensive life insurance claim following the inexplicable death ofbusinessman David Salton. His rapidly inflated premiums immediatelybefore his death stand to make his young widow a very rich lady! Oncethere, Kemp discovers that Salton’s political ambitions had made him alot of enemies, and local tensions around a forthcoming election arealready spilling over into protest and violence on the streets.

Salton also had friends in unexpected places, including the impossiblybeautiful Leotta Tomsson, to whom there is much more than meets theeye. Kemp realises that Salton’s death and the local unrest are adeliberate smokescreen for an altogether more ambitious plot by anenemy in their midst, and as the island comes under siege, even Kemp’sarmy training seems feeble in the face of such a determined foe.

Unseen for more than 40 years and believed lost, Domino Island wasaccepted for publication in 1972 but then replaced by a different novel tocoincide with the release of The Mackintosh Man, the Paul Newman filmbased on Bagley’s earlier novel The Freedom Trap. It is a classic Bagley tourde force with an all-action finale.

TOLKIEN AND THE GREAT WAR

John Garth is a Tolkien expert, widely acknowledged as theauthority on Tolkien’s wartimeexperiences, having appeared onThe South Bank Show and otherdocumentaries about Tolkien. Hestudied English at OxfordUniversity and spent five yearsresearching and writing this book.He works as a newspaperjournalist in London.

Wenhui Press (Chinese Simple) Bourgois (French), Klett Cotta (German), Casa Editirice Marietti(Italian), HarperCollins (Portuguese – Brazil) Minotauro(Spanish), Houghton Mifflin (US English)

A BIOGRAPHY EXPLORING J.R.R. TOLKIEN’S WARTIME EXPERIENCES AND THEIR IMPACT ON HIS LIFE AND HIS WRITING OF THE LORD OF THE RINGS

‘To be caught in youth by 1914 was no less hideous an experience than in1939 … by 1918 all but one of my close friends were dead.’

So J.R.R. Tolkien responded to critics who saw The Lord of the Rings as areaction to the Second World War. Tolkien and the Great War tells forthe first time the full story of how he embarked on the creation ofMiddle-earth in his youth as the world around him was plunged intocatastrophe. This biography reveals the horror and heroism that heexperienced as a signals officer in the Battle of the Somme andintroduces the circle of friends who spurred his mythology to life. Itshows how, after two of these brilliant young men were killed, Tolkienpursued the dream they had all shared by launching his epic of good andevil.

John Garth argues that the foundation of tragic experience in the FirstWorld War is the key to Middle-earth’s enduring power. Tolkien usedhis mythic imagination not to escape from reality but to reflect andtransform the cataclysm of his generation. While his contemporariessurrendered to disillusionment, he kept enchantment alive, reshaping anentire literary tradition into a form that resonates to this day.

This biography is meticulously researched and distilled from his personalwartime papers and a multitude of other sources.

THE FALL OF GONDOLIN

J.R.R. Tolkien (1892-1973) was adistinguished academic, though heis best known for writing TheHobbit, The Lord of the Rings andThe Silmarillion, plus other storiesand essays. His books have beentranslated into over 60 languagesand have sold many millions ofcopies worldwide.

Rights sold in 20 languages. Details available upon request.

In the tale of The Fall of Gondolin are two of the greatest powers in theworld. There is Morgoth of the uttermost evil, unseen in this story butruling over a vast military power from his fortress of Angband. Deeplyopposed to Morgoth is Ulmo, second in might only to Manwë, chief ofthe Valar. Central to this enmity of the gods is the city of Gondolin, beautiful but undiscoverable. It was built and peopled by Noldorin Elveswho, when they dwelt in Valinor, the land of the gods, rebelled againsttheir rule and fled to Middle-earth.

Turgon King of Gondolin is hated and feared above all his enemies byMorgoth, who seeks in vain to discover the marvellously hidden city, while the gods in Valinor in heated debate largely refuse to intervene insupport of Ulmo's desires and designs. Into this world comes Tuor, cousin of Túrin, the instrument of Ulmo's designs.

Guided unseen by him Tuor sets out from the land of his birth on thefearful journey to Gondolin, and in one of the most arresting moments inthe history of Middle-earth the sea-god himself appears to him, rising outof the ocean in the midst of a storm. In Gondolin he becomes great; he iswedded to Idril, Turgon's daughter, and their son is Eärendel, whosebirth and profound importance in days to come is foreseen by Ulmo.

At last comes the terrible ending. Morgoth learns through an act ofsupreme treachery all that he needs to mount a devastating attack on thecity, with Balrogs and dragons and numberless Orcs. After a minutelyobserved account of the fall of Gondolin, the tale ends with the escape ofTuor and Idril, with the child Eärendel, looking back from a cleft in themountains as they flee southward, at the blazing wreckage of their city.

They were journeying into a new story, the Tale of Eärendel, whichTolkien never wrote, but which is sketched out in this book from othersources. In the words of J.R.R. Tolkien, this was ‘the first real story ofthis imaginary world’ and, together with Beren and Lúthien and TheChildren of Húrin, he regarded it as one of the three 'Great Tales' of theElder Days.

17-year-old Laura Bow has invented a rudimentary artificial intelligence, and named it Organon. At first it’s intended to be a sounding-board forher teenage frustrations, a surrogate best friend; but as she grows older,Organon grows with her.

As the world becomes a very different place, technology changes the waywe live, love and die; massive corporations develop rival intelligences toLaura’s, ones without safety barriers or morals; and Laura is forced todecide whether to share her creation with the world.
