SwimmingCanadaisaleadingnationalsportorganizationinCanada.Inbuildingonitsrecentsuccessesatboththeathleticandorganizationallevels,SwimmingCanadaisnowlookingforwardtowards2020andispoisedtodream,aimandplanforhigherlevelsofachievement.SwimmingCanadawillengage,mobilize,motivateandleaditsentirecommunityinachievingCanada’sultimategoals:“onevisionforall,onevisionforswimming in Canada”.

By2020,SwimmingCanadawantstobeamongthe world leading swimming nations.SwimmingCanadawantsourCanadianathletestobecompetitivewiththeworld’sbestswimmingnationsandberecognizedasamodelorganizationinCanada.Thisnextchallengeandultimategoalwillrequirecourage,audacity,unprecedentedlevelsofefforts,organizationalprofessionalism,resources,teamworkandcommitmentsfromallSwimmingCanadamembersandpartners.Withthis,SwimmingCanadawantstoinspireCanadiansandouryouthtobeactiveandhealthy.

Secondly,westrivetobea leader in organizational excellence.Weaimtoincreaseourbudgetbyatleast50%comparedto2012tobettersupportouractivitiesandachieveourexpectedtargets.Wewillprioritizetheprofessionaldevelopmentofourpeople,developstrongerpartnershipsandreinforceSwimmingCanada’sorganizationaleffectiveness.

The importance and benefits of a performance based strategic plan
Adynamicstrategicplanservesmultiplepurposes.SwimmingCanada’sstrategicplanaimstoinspire,engageandempowerpeopletoachieveambitiousgoalsandtargets.Thisplansetsoutaclearandconcisepathtowardstheorganization’sdesiredoutcomes.Thepathis:theVision,Mission,Values,UltimateGoal,StrategicFocuses,PrioritiesandStrategicInitiatives.
Overthenext8years,thecompetitiveandeconomiclandscapewillcertainlyevolve,inCanadaandinternationally.Therefore,SwimmingCanadamustcontinuallyreviewandassesstheplantoensureitremainscurrentandresponsivetotheorganization’sobjectives.Agoodplanisjustthestart.
Agoodplanisalsoresults-oriented.Withoutclearandmeasurablegoals,aplanrisksfailurefromtheoutset.Withthisstrategicplan,SwimmingCanadahassetforthaseriesofclearandmeasurablegoalsthatwillguidethedirectionoftheorganizationoverthenext8years.Clarityintheoutcomesisessential.
Finally,SwimmingCanadarecognizesthatitcannotachievethe2020Visionwithoutthesupportandassistanceofitscommunity.Coaches,ProvincialSections,clubs,sponsors,members,partnersandswimmersofallagesandskillarenecessarycontributorstoensureCanadaisaworldleadingswimmingnation.

Why Swimming Canada has decided to develop this plan in 2011?
SwimmingCanadafeltitwasimportanttodevelopitsvisionandtheplanbeforethe2012Olympic/Paralympicyear.WedidnotwantthiscomprehensiveprocesstodisrupttheOlympic/Paralympicpreparation.Thiswasanappropriatetimetoassessthestepsrequiredtotaketheorganizationtothenextlevelofexcellence.Itwasnecessarytocanvassabroadspectrumoftheswimmingandsportingcommunitytoidentifycommonobjectivesandsharedvisions.WealsosoughttobenchmarkSwimmingCanadawithother“best-in-class”sportorganizations.Toachievethoseobjectives,theprocesswasdividedin5phases.
Phase 1consistedofperformingananalysisofthecurrentlandscapeofSwimmingCanadaandswimminginCanada.Usingvariousmethodsofconsultation,SwimmingCanadawasabletoidentifyitsstrengths,weaknesses,opportunitiesandthreatsandthendetermineitsmostimportantstrategicchallenges.
Phase 2aimedatthevisioningportionoftheprocess.Again,throughcomprehensiveconsultations,wesoughtbroadvisionsofSwimmingCanada’sfutureandaskedwhatneededtobedonetoachievethisnewvision.
Phase 3 gatheredmorethan30ofCanada’sswimmingleadersfor2daysinOttawaduringanationalstrategicretreattodevelopthevariouspartsoftheplan.These3phasesallowedustopreparethisplan.
Phases 4 concentratedontheplan’sapprovalprocessesbySwimmingCanadastaff,theBoardofDirectorsandtheGeneralMembership.
Phases 5willtargetontheimplementationstrategy.

Swimming Canada’s movement to teach every child in Canada to swim
Why Swimming Canada started the CANSwim movement:
• Drowning is the second highest injury-related killer of Canadian kids under 14.
• The second highest age group for drowning is children aged 1-4.
• Almost every child drowning is preventable with education and program accessibility.
Learning to swim reduces a child’s risk of drowning, increases stamina and builds self-confidence. It teaches goal setting and healthy habits.
As the sport’s leader, Swimming Canada and our CANSwim partners will campaign to reduce drowning accidents involving children. We’re also helping fight obesity by encouraging a fit, fun and healthy lifestylefor all Canadian kids.
The CANSwim movement complements Swimming Canada’s mission of “Swimming to win; Winning for life”.
