2019 Summer Camps

The Teen University Filmmaking Academy returns this summer for a second year with a new script and a new camp – Stop Motion and Claymation.

“We think it’s going to be an exciting course,” said Glenn Seale, dean of Trident Tech’s Film, Media and Visual Arts Division.

“The approach we have to executing the camps is to try to provide as much tactile or hands- on activities as possible and to stay away from lecturing or teaching the high-end, technical terminology,” Seale added. “It’s more active where the students learn by doing most of the time.”

The Filmmaking Academy includes six camps over the course of the summer. In addition to the new Stop Motion and Claymation camp the other offerings are Acting for Film, Movie Masks and Makeup, Film Production, Sound for Film, and Film Editing. Teens can enroll in individual camps or take on the entire series to experience the movie-making process from start to finish. Those who sign up for all six get a 50 percent discount on the cost of the final camp.

All of the camps build on each other to produce a final project, so footage shot during the Acting, Stop Motion and Makeup camps gets cut together in the Production, Editing and Sound camps to create a final short film.

Exposing teens to a variety of techniques to make films and videos helps them determine if it is something they’d want to pursue as a career, Seale said. It also helps them connect with peers that share some interests, and helps build skills they can use in any number of other fields as more and more industries see the value of, and need for, multimedia content in an increasingly digital world.

“Media content creation is one of the fastest growing industries in the world now because of all the need for content online, and young students going through this program are exposed to creating media,” Seale said. “Almost every company now needs media, so their skills can transfer to almost any business.”

Seale is already expecting to see a few students from last summer’s Filmmaking Academy return this year, and said the

inaugural run in 2018 received a lot of positive feedback from parents and students alike. He predicts the Academy will be

popular again this year, but space is limited to 15 in each camp, so parents shouldn’t wait too long to register their child.

“I really think the camps have been a fun experience for the students and for the faculty leading them,” he said. “When you teach at a college it’s always exciting to work with younger students because they are so energetic and excited to learn.”
