Today’s Matchup“4 Downs” with the Salukis

1 - Southern Illinois has fi elded football teams since 1913, but Saturday’s game will mark the Salukis’ fi rst-ever matchup with a Big South Con-ference member. The Salukis are the fi rst of three fi rst- me opponents on Liberty’s 2015 schedule, along with Georgia State and Kennesaw State.

2 - New York Giants fans are familiar with both teams, as Southern Illinois graduate Brandon Ja-cobs played RB for the Giants for eight seasons and Liberty alum Rashad Jennings is in his second year as a Giants RB. Southern Illinois is the sec-ond of four straight Liberty opponents entering its matchup with the Flames off of a bye week.

3 - Southern Illinois is 0-2 to start the 2015 sea-son and has lost four straight games da ng back to 2014. However, both of the Salukis’ losses this season have been by three points or less, includ-ing a 48-47 setback at Indiana and a 27-24 loss at Southeast Missouri. Saturday’s game will mark the third me a Liberty athle c team has gone head-to-head with Southern Illinois, but the fi rst me in Carbondale. The baseball team lost to SIU

in Florida in 1999 and the volleyball team lost to the Salukis in California in 2005.

4 - Liberty has played four previous football games in Illinois, but none since Oct. 24, 1992. The Flames are 0-4 in Illinois, including setbacks to Eastern Illinois (1986 and 1988), Northern Illi-nois (1992) and Western Illinois (1987).
