What is Masterplan? Masterplan is the annual Business Plan Competition hosted by IIM Ahmedabad to provide the budding

entrepreneurs with a platform to gain real-world experience. Through several rounds, mentorship and

feedback, the participants get a chance to finetune their business models and present their ideas in front

of potential investors. Its final round occurs during The Red Brick Summit, IIM A's annual International

Business Summit.

EntreVC, the Entrepreneurship and Venture Capital Club of IIM Ahmedabad organizes this event in

collaboration with CIIE, The Centre for Innovation Incubation and Entrepreneurship. CIIE, in partnership

with its network of mentors, corporates, development agencies, and investors, cultivates a rare breed of

entrepreneurs by incubating, accelerating, mentoring, and funding innovative start-ups. With the belief

that entrepreneurship has an unmatched ability to bring about disruptive change in society, CIIE engages

with numerous ventures to impact areas like energy, environment, agriculture, affordable technology and

healthcare.

How to participate? To participate in Masterplan 2020, register your team at the Masterplan listing on Dare2Compete. Once you register, you will be notified with the details regarding the first round of the competition via email.

Eligibility Criteria The event is open for students, corporate professionals, entrepreneurs as well as other employed or self-

employed individuals.

Team Composition

1. A team can have a minimum of one and a maximum of five members.

2. Members of a team may or may not be from the same organization/college.

No change in the team structure is permitted after the team is registered. Please register your team after careful thought and deliberation

The competition has been divided into two tracks: Start-Up Central and Idea Central.

Masterplan Start-up Central Want to pitch your start-up to a panel of VCs? Sign up for Startup Central!

All registered start-ups are eligible to participate in Startup Central given that they meet the following

criteria:

1. Incorporated on or after April 1, 2017.

2. Have not raised any external funding.

You are encouraged to register using your Startup Name - this will enable us to promote your start-up in

our marketing material at later stages.

Masterplan - Idea Central Have a business idea but not pursued it yet? Sign up for Idea Central!

Teams / Start-ups registering for Idea Central should be in the ideation or prototyping stage.

Theme for this year- “India 2.0: Innovating for the Next Half Billion”

India has reached an inflection point in its innovation ecosystem. For Idea Central, we want to hear

about ideas tapping the next 500 million Internet users, which is a population segment that has typically

been underserved and disempowered. These innovations should address the challenges like lower

purchasing power of the majority of these users, lack of vernacular content, social/cultural barriers in

usage of applications, etc.

Competition Rules and Guidelines Participation and Registration

1. A team can register under ONLY ONE of the above tracks strictly adhering to the respective

eligibility criteria. Registered start-ups found to have participated under Idea Central track will be

eliminated.

2. A team can submit only one business model/idea after registration. 3. One participant cannot be part of more than one team.

4. Every contestant must agree with the rules of the contest and must accept the declaration of confidentiality during registration in order to participate. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions of the competition before registering.

Round 1: Submission of Executive Summary

● Registered teams will compete against each other in a display of creativity and clarity of thought. In this round, participants are tasked with explaining the idea in an Executive Summary answering the questions to -

o What is the existing gap or problem that you are solving? o What is your solution/idea/product? o What is your revenue model?

● The submission should be a one pager, Font –Times New Roman, Size – 11, Line spacing – 1 with

Normal Margins (2.54 cm by 2.54 cm).

● Only .pdf file formats will be accepted for the executive summary submission. ● Please name your file in the following format:

IC/SC Team Name_Team Leader’s Name_R1.pdf. IC is Idea Central and SC, Startup Central. For example, if you have been registered under Startup Central with Team Name Swiggy and Team Leader Name Sriharsha Majety, your one pager should be named as SC_Swiggy_Sriharsha Majety_R1.pdf

● Please submit the Round 1 Task by logging into the Masterplan Portal using your email ID and

phone number by September 19, 2020 latest. ● Please note: Entries reaching us after the deadline will not be entertained for evaluation

under any circumstances. ● Please note: Submissions have to be made by the team leader only

Round 2: Submission of the Business Model

● Only teams that qualify for the second round are eligible for submitting their business models.

● Only .pdf file formats will be accepted.

● The submission should not be more than ‘6 pages’ OR ‘8 slides’, Font –Times New Roman, Size – 11, Line spacing – 1 with Normal Margins (2.54 cm by 2.54 cm).

● Please name your file in the following format:

● Guidelines for the format of Business Model (Submission date: 5 October 2020)

⮚ Cover Sheet (Company Name, College/Organization/Company. Presenting Team Members, Team Leader contact info)

⮚ Value Proposition

⮚ Product or service description (including status of development- beta, prototype, etc.)

⮚ Customer/Market analysis (market size and potential market share)

⮚ Sales and Marketing Strategy (how you will go-to-market), Intellectual Property status (e.g., patents, licenses, etc.)

⮚ Competitor Analysis (competitors and your competitive differentiation)

⮚ Management team and/or advisors, including relevant experience

⮚ Financial highlights (cash flow, income statement, balance sheet)

⮚ Offering of the company (how much investment you are seeking, uses of funding, possible exits)

● For the comprehensive B-plan submission, teams may choose to diverge (add or subtract sections) from the prescribed format if deemed necessary. However, it is recommended that you adhere to this format.

● The final Business Model must be submitted online in the Masterplan Portal. ● CIIE and EntreVC, IIM Ahmedabad will judge the round two submissions.

Round 3: Due diligence by Matrix Partners

● The final Business Models of selected teams from Round 2 will be forwarded to Matrix Partners.

● Due diligence will be done by Matrix Partners and selected teams can expect calls from

Matrix Partners regarding their Masterplan submission.

● Teams will be assigned mentors from CIIE and Matrix Partners. Mentoring will take place via email, video conferencing and telephone calls.

Round 4: Pitching Round

● Selected participants from the previous round will be chosen to present in The Red Brick Summit 2020 (International Business Summit of IIM-A) to be held between 24-25 October 2020. This year the fest is going to be held online.

● All the teams making it to the final round will get opportunities to pitch to VCs from Matrix Partners and other partners. This may lead to further mentoring opportunities for all finalist ventures, and eventually leading to probable fund-raising or equity infusion.

● Please note: Unlike previous years, the final round will be completely online due to the

pandemic. Teams must make sure they have a decent internet connection while presenting on video call.

Judging Criteria Round 1: Submission of Executive Summary

● Multiple judges will judge each entry and the final scores will be normalized by proven and genuine statistical methods that will be declared soon.

● Entries will be judged based on the following criteria and each criterion would be marked on a

scale of 1-10 with 10 being the highest and 1 being the lowest.

● The final round is a pitching event where Masterplan provides a platform to the teams selected for the Grand Finale to pitch their product/service or idea to a panel of venture capitalists from Matrix Partners India and the Centre for Innovation Incubation, and Entrepreneurship (CIIE).

● The teams will have the opportunity to make their business presentations based on which

Matrix Partners India and CIIE may decide to invest in the business, based on further rounds of negotiations and due diligence.

Prize Distribution

● The total cash prize distribution for the prize winners will be distributed within four months after the declaration of results

● All prize money will be given as cheques. No cash under whatsoever circumstances will be given. Masterplan 2020 is not responsible for delivery of any funding commitments made during the event.

What do investors look for in a Business Model?

● Is the business opportunity as presented both highly attractive and clearly realistic? Is

the business defensible from competitors?

● What comparisons are there to past success stories that indicate this venture will succeed? What is the amount of up-front capital investment required?

● Do the market and financial projections demonstrate that the team understands its

proposed business adequately?

● How long will it take from the current stage of development to bring the product to its market?

● Can this venture achieve a leadership position in its market?

● Does the team have sufficient breadth, balance and quality to make its ideas happen? Will the ego of the founder(s) get in the way of success?

● Is the team focused on its target market? ● What is the expected time and amount of pay-off to investors?

● Is the reader familiar with and interested in the given market space? Is

the structure of the Business Model clear and well drafted?

● Does the team have the necessary communication skills to present a compelling story? Are the team members dedicated to the venture and their roles in the group?

● Does the team have a clear structure for spending the investment money it receives? Why will

this business persist through the test of time and become a real-world winner in 5 years? ● Have the team considered protecting its business’s Intellectual Property assets?

FAQs

● Who is eligible to participate in Masterplan?

The contest is open to students, corporate professionals, entrepreneurs, as well as other independent individuals (employed or unemployed).

● I want to participate in Masterplan 2020. What are the steps I should follow? Step 1: Register at D2C for Masterplan 2020.

Step 2: You will have to provide the Team Leader’s details as well as all other Team Members’ details, including postal address and others as required. You will receive a confirmation mail. Click on the confirmation link provided.

● Do all the team members have to be from the same University / Business School / Organization?

No. All the team members need not be from the same University / Business School / Organization.

● Can corporate participants from different companies form a Team? Yes. Corporate professionals from different companies can form a team together.

● Can the team have a mix of Business school students/undergraduate students/corporate professionals/entrepreneurs/other individuals? Yes. The team can have any mix of participants.

● Is the team composition mentioned at the time of registration final? Yes. No changes will be allowed in the team composition after registration. Therefore, please enter the team details after proper deliberation.

● What if a person gets registered as part of more than one team?

Both the teams will become ineligible to participate. Therefore, please check with the proposed team members before registering.

● What is the registration fee for participation? There is no registration fee.

● Where will the final round of the event be held?

The Grand Finale will be held online, between 24-25 October 2020, during The Red Brick Summit 2020 hosted by Indian Institute of Management - Ahmedabad.

● Can I enter both Masterplan Start-up Central and Masterplan Idea Central? No. Each registering team must choose only one of the two tracks, Start-up Central and Idea Central, based on the current status of their business.

● Can we consult non-team members such as professors or industry experts?

The interaction with non-team members should be restricted to interviews and surveys, and proper reference should be made to the same in the business plan document. Similarly, any other information source including published studies may be used, but the document submitted should contain proper references.

● Can I submit additional documents along with the executive summary?

No, we do not accept any other documents. The judging will be done only based on the executive summary.

● Should the business plans strictly adhere to a structure?

While adherence to any structure is not compulsory, all the relevant aspects such as business

concept, vision, market opportunity, competitive advantage, detailed competitive analysis, and

the resources and finances required to implement the idea can be included. Relevant financial

projections including expected cash flows, pro-forma balance sheets and P&L statements can be

included. Proposed management structure and relevant assumptions may also be included.

Terms and Conditions Confidentiality

● Masterplan, IIM-Ahmedabad honours the confidentiality of all participants and their business plans and venture ideas. All judges and mentors associated with the competition also recognize the sensitivity of the plans being presented.

● The Masterplan 2020 Organizing Team may publicize the names and associations of judges and

mentors associated in the evaluation rounds of the competition. However, the individual contact information for such judges will neither be disclosed, nor be sought by any of the teams.

● Each participating team must agree to accept that their registration form and other entries will

not be returned to them and accept that their personal data will be available for information and statistical purposes.

Intellectual Property

● The participating team represents that Intellectual Property in the Business Model does not infringe upon the intellectual property or any other legal or moral right of any person or entity.

Legal Issues

● The participating team represents that they shall not violate any applicable law. ● The Terms & Conditions and the Competition Rules shall be governed by the laws of India.

● Any dispute or conflict arising out of, from or relating to anything contained in these Terms &

Conditions and/ or the Competition Rules is subject to the jurisdiction of Ahmedabad courts only. Miscellaneous

● EntreVC, IIM Ahmedabad reserves the right to disqualify or prohibit from participating in

Masterplan 2020 any team that makes a submission that, in the sole discretion of EntreVC, IIM

Ahmedabad, does not confirm with the Eligibility Criteria or does not comply with these Terms &

Conditions and/ or the Competition Rules and/ or violates the spirit of Masterplan 2020 as a

competition. In addition, EntreVC, IIM Ahmedabad may notify the appropriate legal/

administrative authorities as it deems fit and/or initiate any other action as may be advised.

● No participating team may under any circumstances attempt to contact a judge during evaluation stages of the competition. Any such behaviour will result in the immediate disqualification of the team from the competition.

● By entering the Competition, each team and its individual members agree to accept as final any

decisions of EntreVC, IIM Ahmedabad including determination of the winners of Masterplan

● EntreVC, IIM Ahmedabad shall have the discretion to initiate appropriate action against participating teams including individuals of such participating teams in case of any losses or damages arising from violation of the Eligibility Criteria, Competition Rules and the Terms & Conditions.

● If EntreVC, IIM Ahmedabad or its sponsors or associates are faced with any claim or loss (including

any third-party claims) arising from or relating to any breach by any member of a participating team of the Terms and Conditions hereof, such participating team shall severally and jointly indemnify and keep harmless EntreVC, IIM Ahmedabad or its sponsors or associates.
