All models are delivered in a 2U, 19-inch rack mount enclosure and include a three-year warranty with customer replaceable unit (CRU) and onsite service. Optionalwarranty service upgrades are available for enhanced levels of warranty service.

Overview

Storwize V3700 Storage System is a member of the Storwize family of disk systems.Leveraging IBM Storwize V7000 Storage System and IBM SAN Volume Controllerfunctions, interoperability, and management tools, Storwize V3700 deliversinnovation and new levels of storage efficiency with ease of use in an entry disksystem to enable organizations to overcome their storage challenges.

Storwize V3700 Storage System features two node canisters, with 4 GB or 8 GBcache per canister, in a compact, 2U, 19-inch rack mount enclosure. 6 Gb SAS and1 Gb SCSI connectivity is standard, with an option for 8 Gb FC or 10 iSCSI/FCoEconnectivity.

Storwize V3700 is available in the following models:

The 3.5-inch models support up to twelve 3.5-inch drives, while the 2.5-inch modelssupport up to twenty-four 2.5-inch drives. High-performance disk drives, high-capacity nearline disk drives, and flash (solid state) drives are supported. Drives ofthe same form factor can be intermixed within an enclosure, and 3.5-inch and 2.5-inch expansion units can be intermixed within a Storwize V3700 Storage System. AStorwize V3700 Storage System scales up to 240 drives with the attachment of nineStorwize V3700 expansion units.

The 3.5-inch models support ac power, while the 2.5-inch models are available witheither ac power or dc power. All Storwize V3700 models conform to applicable NEBSlevel 3 documents and to applicable ETSI documents.

Storwize V3700 Storage System functions, management, and interoperabilityinclude:

• RAID levels 0, 1, 5, 6, and 10 for data protection

• Virtualization of internal storage for rapid, flexible provisioning and simpleconfiguration changes

• Thin provisioning for improved storage utilization

• FlashCopy® for creating instant copies of data for backup or application testing

• IBM System Storage® Easy Tier for automatic migration of frequently accesseddata from disk drives to high performing flash drive

• Remote mirroring for data replication between systems at different locationsthrough Metro Mirror and Global Mirror functions

• One-way data migration for simplified movement of data onto the StorwizeV3700 system

• Embedded GUI for innovative and intuitive management capabilities

• Extensive interoperability support with support for most major server platformsand operating systems

SAS, iSCSI, FC, and FCoE connectivity with intermix flexibility

Storwize V3700 Storage System controller unit models include six 6 Gb SAS andfour 1 Gb Ethernet ports standard for SAS and iSCSI connectivity. They can beoptionally configured with eight 8 Gb FC ports, four 10 Gb Ethernet (iSCSI/FCoE)ports, or additional 6 Gb SAS or 1 Gb Ethernet ports. The following configurationsare available:

Drive options and intermix flexibility meet a complete range of needs

Storwize V3700 is designed to support the complete range of data storagerequirements, from highly utilized applications to high-capacity, low usageapplications.

The following 3.5-inch drives are supported:

• High-performance, enterprise class disk drives

– 300 GB and 600 GB 15,000 rpm 1

– 900 GB and 1.2 TB 10,000 rpm 1

• High-capacity, archival-class nearline disk drives

– 2 TB, 3 TB, and 4 TB 7,200 rpm

The following 2.5-inch drives are supported:

• Flash drives in 200 GB, 400 GB, and 800 GB

• High-performance, enterprise class disk drives

– 146 GB, 300 GB, and 600 GB 15,000 rpm

– 600 GB, 900 GB, and 1.2 TB 10,000 rpm

• High-capacity, archival-class nearline disk drives

– 1 TB 7,200 rpm

All drives are dual-port and hot-swappable. Drives of the same form factor can beintermixed within the appropriate enclosure, providing the flexibility to addressperformance and capacity needs within a single enclosure.

Up to nine Storwize V3700 expansion units are supported by a single StorwizeV3700 controller unit. You can intermix both 3.5-inch and 2.5-inch expansion unitsbehind either a 3.5-inch or 2.5-inch controller unit. This delivers the added flexibilityto mix both 3.5-inch and 2.5-inch drives within a single system.

Additional drives and expansion units are designed to be dynamically added withvirtually no downtime, helping to quickly and seamlessly respond to ever-growingcapacity demands.

Designed for high availability

Storwize V3700 Storage System is designed to offer high system and dataavailability with:

• Dual-active, intelligent node canisters with mirrored cache

• Dual-port disk drives with automatic disk drive failure detection and RAID rebuildwith global hot spares

• Redundant hardware, including power supplies and fans

• Hot-swappable and customer replaceable components

• Automated path failover support for the data path between the server and thedrives

Rich set of functional capabilities standard with every system

As a member of the Storwize family, Storwize V3700 Storage System leveragesStorwize V7000 Storage System and SAN Volume Controller functions andmanagement tools.

The following functions are included with every Storwize V3700 Storage System:



• Raid levels 0, 1, 5, 6, and 10: Provide the flexibility to choose the level of dataprotection required.

• Virtualization of internal storage: Enables rapid, flexible provisioning andsimple configuration changes.

• Thin provisioning: Optimizes efficiency by allocating disk storage space in aflexible manner among multiple users, based on the minimum space required byeach user at any given time. With thin provisioning, applications consume onlythe space they are actually using, not the total space that has been allocated tothem.

• Data migration: Enables easy and nondisruptive moves of volumes fromanother storage system onto the Storwize V3700 Storage System using FC orSAS connectivity.

• FlashCopy: Enables creation of copies of data for backup, parallel processing,testing, and development, and have the copies available almost immediately.Storwize V3700 supports up to 64 FlashCopy targets per system.

Optional licensed functions and 90 day trial period

Storwize V3700 capabilities can be expanded with the following optional licensedfunctions. Each function is licensed to a Storwize V3700 controller unit and coversthe entire Storwize V3700 Storage System (controller unit and all attachedexpansion units).

To help evaluate the benefits of these new capabilities, licensed functions (withthe exception of FlashCopy upgrade) can be enabled at no charge for a 90 daytrial period. Trials are initiated from the Storwize management GUI and do notrequire any Lenovo intervention. Upon expiration of the trial, the function will beautomatically disabled unless a license key for that function has been installed ontothe machine.

• Turbo performance: Turbo performance increases the maximum IOPS andthroughput of a Storwize V3700 Storage System. Configurations with greaterthan 80 disk drives or more than five SSDs are ideal candidates to benefit fromthe increased IOPS offered with Turbo performance. Configurations with greaterthan 30 disk drives are suited to benefit from the throughput increase offeredwith Turbo performance.

• FlashCopy upgrade: FlashCopy allows the creation of copies of data for backup,parallel processing, testing, and development, and have the copies availablealmost immediately. All Storwize V3700 Storage Systems support up to 64targets per system at no charge. The FlashCopy upgrade option increases thissupport to 2,040 FlashCopy targets per system.

• Easy Tier: Storage tiering helps optimize storage use with data location toimprove system performance, reduce costs, and simplify management. EasyTier automatically and dynamically moves frequently accessed data to flash(solid state) drives in the system, resulting in flash drive performance withoutmanually creating and managing storage tier policies. Easy Tier makes it easyand economical to deploy flash drives in the environment.

• Remote mirroring: This feature provides storage system-based data replicationusing either synchronous or asynchronous data transfers over IP, FC, or FCoEcommunication links:

– Metro Mirror is designed to maintain a fully synchronized copy at metropolitandistances (up to 300 km)

– Global Mirror is designed to operate asynchronously and helps maintain a copyat much greater distances (up to 8000 km)

Both functions are designed to support VMware Site Recovery Manager to helpspeed disaster recovery.For ultimate flexibility, Storwize V3700 remote mirroring is designed tointeroperate with any other IBM Storwize family system, including StorwizeV7000, Storwize V5000, IBM Flex System V7000, and SAN Volume Controller.The remote mirroring option must be acquired (or licensed) for both the primary(local) and secondary (remote) systems. If Storwize V3700 is mirrored to asystem other than Storwize V3700, the other system must have the appropriateand applicable license for remote mirroring.



Innovative and simplified management capabilities

Each Storwize V3700 Storage System includes a simple and intuitive GUI designedto allow storage to be quickly deployed and efficiently managed. The GUI runs onthe Storwize V3700 system, so there is no need for a separate console. All you needto do is point your web browser to the system. It is based on the Storwize V7000management GUI and has a similar look and feel.

Remote mirroring: Storwize V3700 systems acquired from Lenovo (Lenovomachine type 6099) can interoperate in a remote mirroring relationship with otherStorwize family products acquired from Lenovo and with Storwize family products,including IBM SAN Volume Controller and IBM Flex System V7000, acquired fromIBM (IBM machine types 2072, 2076, 2077, 2078, 2145, and 4939).

Enclosures: Storwize V3700 control enclosures acquired from Lenovo (Lenovomachine type 6099) only support the attachment of Storwize V3700 expansionenclosures acquired from Lenovo (Lenovo machine type 6099). Storwize V3700expansion enclosures acquired from Lenovo (Lenovo machine type 6099) are onlysupport attachment to Storwize V3700 control enclosures acquired from Lenovo(Lenovo machine type 6099).

Features and option: Storwize V3700 systems acquired from Lenovo (Lenovomachine type 6099) only support features and options announced by, and acquiredfrom, Lenovo (Lenovo machine types 6099 and 3331).

Limitations

Licensed functions: Storwize V3700 licensed functions are licensed to a StorwizeV3700 Control Enclosure. Once a license function has been activated, it is nottransferable to another serial numbered Storwize V3700 Control Enclosure.

The licensed function 90 day trial is enabled on a per-function basis and functions donot need to be evaluated simultaneously. A given licensed function can be enabledonly once for the 90 day trial per Storwize V3700 Control Enclosure.

12 GB SAS drives: Select drives offered on Storwize V3700 support up to a 12 Gbper second data transfer rate. These drives will operate up to a 6 Gb per seconddata transfer rate when installed in a Storwize V3700.

Planning information

Customer responsibilities

Physical configuration and installation planning, along with machine installation andconfiguration, are customer responsibilities.

Network Equipment Building System (NEBS)/ EuropeanTelecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI): Storwize V3700 systemsconform to applicable ETSI documents.

It is a customer responsibility to review the NEBS and ETSI test result documentsto determine the testing performed on the models and options meet theirrequirements. Contact your Lenovo sales representative or Business Partner toobtain a copy of the test result documents.

You are responsible for downloading or obtaining from IBM, and installing designatedMachine Code (microcode, basic input/output system code (called BIOS), utilityprograms, device drivers, and diagnostics delivered with an IBM machine) and othersoftware updates in a timely manner from an IBM Internet website or from otherelectronic media, and following the instructions that IBM provides. You may requestLenovo to install Machine Code changes; however, you may be charged for thatservice.

Customer Replaceable Unit (CRU) Service

Lenovo provides a replacement CRU to you for you to install. CRU information andreplacement instructions are shipped with your machine and are available fromLenovo at any time on your request. A CRU is designated as being either a Tier 1(mandatory) or a Tier 2 (optional) CRU. Installation of Tier 1 CRUs, as specifiedin this announcement, is your responsibility. If Lenovo installs a Tier 1 CRU atyour request, you will be charged for the installation. You may install a Tier 2 CRUyourself or request Lenovo to install it, at no additional charge, under the type ofwarranty service designated for your Machine.



Based upon availability, a CRU will be shipped for next business day (NBD) delivery.Lenovo specifies in the materials shipped with a replacement CRU whether adefective CRU must be returned to Lenovo. When return is required, returninstructions and a container are shipped with the replacement CRU, and you maybe charged for the replacement CRU if Lenovo does not receive the defective CRUwithin 15 days of your receipt of the replacement.

You must provide a suitable working area to allow disassemblyand reassembly of the Lenovo machine. The area must be clean, well lit, andsuitable for the purpose. On-site Service is not available in all countries, and somecountries have kilometer or mileage limitations from a Lenovo service center. Inthose locations where On-site Service is not available, the normal in-country servicedelivery is used.

International Warranty Service

International Warranty Service (IWS) is available in selected countries or regions.

The warranty service type and the service level provided in the servicing countrymay be different from that provided in the country in which the machine waspurchased.

Under IWS, warranty service will be provided with the prevailing warranty servicetype and service level available for the IWS-eligible machine type in the servicingcountry, and the warranty period observed will be that of the country in which themachine was purchased.

Lenovo Services provides hardware warranty service upgrades, maintenance, andselected support services in one agreement.

Warranty service upgrade

During the warranty period, a warranty service upgrade provides an enhanced levelof On-site Service for an additional charge. A warranty service upgrade must bepurchased during the warranty period and is for a fixed term (duration). It is notrefundable or transferable and may not be prorated. If required, Lenovo will providethe warranty service upgrade enhanced level of On-site Service acquired by thecustomer. Service levels are response-time objectives and are not guaranteed.

Warranty service upgrades and maintenance services

Under certain conditions, Lenovo repairs selected non-Lenovo parts at no additionalcharge for machines that are covered under warranty service upgrades ormaintenance services.

Lenovo Service provides hardware problem determination on non-Lenovo parts (forexample, adapter cards, PCMCIA cards, disk drives, or memory) installed withinLenovo machines covered under warranty service upgrades or maintenance servicesand provides the labor to replace the failing parts at no additional charge.
