THE UNSUNG HEROES OF THE ADSC-IAFDBy Dan Thome, P.E., ADSC President, Vice President – Central Region, Nicholson Construction Company

President’s message

Have you ever worked with someone who is always putting forth extra effort for the betterment of the company – but rarely seeks credit for it? I’m talking about the folks who are not driven by reward or recognition – they do what they do because it’s just who they are. These people are the unsung heroes of any company.

Think of the camera crew on a television broadcast or movie set – while the stars get the spotlight, no show or movie could be produced without these professionals behind the scenes. And what quarterback or running back could score the game-winning touchdown without a strong offensive line to clear the way?

At ADSC-IAFD, we are also powered by unsung heroes, namely our Associate Members. They provide sponsorships for meetings and events – and let’s not forget the ADSC-IAFD has eleven chapters in both the United States and Canada! They are also THE KEY contributors for the International Foundations Congress and Equipment Expo (IFCEE) event.

More than any other organization, an added value of ADSC membership is the ability to be involved in chapter activities. Currently, there are eleven regional chapters spread throughout North America. The connectivity to ADSC HQ, yet separate and distinct membership, provides opportunity to work in community with other mem-bers of a region to acknowledge and address shared interests and concerns. Throughout the years, ADSC’s overall effectiveness has been enhanced as a result of this structure and it continues today, evidenced by our recent Drill Rig Operator Certification program, of which ironically initiated within the West-ern Canadian Chapter under the direction of former chapter President, Kevin Sharp. (read more about Kevin on page 105 of Industry News).

Late last year, ADSC chapters collectively provided approximately 120 can-didates to take part in a beta case written examination for the Certification of Foundation Drill Rig Operators through our certification partner, The National Commission for the Certification of Crane Operators (NCCCO). There are two clear-cut elements for this certification process. A can-didate must take, and pass, a written exam, and then take and pass a practical exam - one for foundation drill rigs and one for anchor/micropile drill rigs. The written exam includes a core assessment of the candidate’s general knowledge of both types of drill rigs, and a specialty assessment specific to one or both types. The practi-cal examinations are comprised of operational tasks that increase progressively in the skill levels tested. It was determined by NCCCO that all candidates who successfully pass the core and at least one (or both) of the specialty written exams, would be entitled to take the practical exam for one or both types of foundation drill rigs, within a twelve-month period. This would complete the process for certification.

Although certification of drill rig operators is yet to be mandatory, many believe that day is soon to come. Because of this, there is a need to establish a game plan to enable us (the industry) to be best prepared for when it is. Considering this is a new certification program, and due to the current limited number of Practical Examiners, ADSC is asking NC-CCO to consider an extension for those who successfully completed the written beta test to take and pass their practical examinations. This again will likely incorporate chapter involvement, which will be imperative to a successful process.

A candidate must take, and pass, a written exam, and then take and pass a practical exam - one for foundation drill rigs and one for anchor/micropile drill rigs.
