After a first edition held against all odds in April last year, despite the crisis that the city, the country and the area is living, Tripoli Film Festival is back this year, proudly carrying the same message of peace, tolerance and cultural resistance.

This festival is organised by, and for Tripoli citizens. Its primary aim is to contribute to a better access to culture, helping expand our horizons and our world by decentralizing the holding of cultural events in Lebanon. We are hoping that this year’s selection will convey our message that is transcending borders; the world is rich and beautiful, and Tripoli is a part of it.

The main events will take place at The Safadi Cultural Center and at the Azm Cultural Center and special open air screenings in Beb el Tebbaneh and Jabal Mohsen neighbourhoods will run in parallel to the festival. The Beirut Arab University, Tripoli Campus will host an “out of competition” documentary screening day and panel debates, open to the public, with international guest speakers from the Forum for Cities in Transition around the theme “Women and Conflicts”.

The Festival venues will showcase works by local artists and the event will export our city to the world. This second year is indeed a bigger challenge for our organizing committee and our city: we invited the filmmakers in competition and we will have among our guests international festival programmers and critics. We hope to be up to the challenge of showing our rich heritage, our friendliness and hospitality, in our beautiful and resilient city, the Lebanese Tripoli that we know and love.

The Bdoul tribe of Petra lived in caves on the heritage site for more than 200 years. Their lives consisted of tending to crops and raising animals. In 1985, the Jordanian Government moved the tribe to purpose-built housing in order to accommodates the ever-increasing number of tourists flooding into the area.

Toufic Beyhum and Carl Gough spent 2 months living in the bdoul village of Umm Sahyoun. They came wielding a camera, in order to document the lives of the tribe and to witness First-hand how the locals have been influenced by tourism, and the Capitalist society this has engerdered.

This documentary scratches under the dull surface of third age people, reveals their specific personalities by showing their everyday lives and it gives them the opportunity to be themselves and not just old.
