Battery Powered Vehicles (BPVs)

• Reality check

• Which vehicles?

• Incentives

• Barriers (beyond batteries)

Page 25: T3 0940 1050 V2

Reality Check

• The “stickiness” of the incumbent

• 30Wh/kg, 180-300Wh/kg, 12,000Wh/kg

• The range/savings paradox

• Grid emissions

• Plug-in hybrid – muddying the water

• Who is really making BPVs?

Page 26: T3 0940 1050 V2

BPV market +ve’s

• Lower running costs

• Less affected by fuel price volatility

• Driving experience benefits (start/stop, torque)

• Seen to be green (business and personal)

• Great fun to drive and plug in

• “Playing my part” in reducing emissions

Page 27: T3 0940 1050 V2

Fuel costs (40mpg)

Page 28: T3 0940 1050 V2

Citroen C3 vs. i-Miev

Citroen C3 diesel £9000: 68mpg at 10,000 miles/year7 years = 70,000 miles = 1,029 gallons = 4,678 ltrs

= £5,146 @ £1.10/ltr or £8,420 @ £1.80/ltr

iMiev 4-seater £25-30,000 (estimated)

Petrol version = £9,000 (sold 267 in ‘08)

16kWh battery pack cost > £10,000

Page 29: T3 0940 1050 V2

Why buy a BPV?

Rational• Save money (as per graph)• Access to exclusive zones (Florence)• Conscience (“save the planet”)• Business competitiveness (Royal Mail)• Convenience-based incentives

Meta Rational• Feel good (Tesla)• Look good (Prius)

Page 30: T3 0940 1050 V2

BPV availability in the UK?

Page 31: T3 0940 1050 V2

Current/Planned Incentives in the UK

• £5,000 OLEV grant for plug-in cars• Plugged-in places initiatives (London, Milton Keynes, North East England)• TSB funding for research• One North East EV programmes• Planned purchases of EVs by government bodies (e.g. GLA)• Vehicle Excise Duty exemption• Enhanced Capital Allowance (100% year 1 vs 20% annually)• Lowest rate of benefit in kind /company car tax• Lower rate of VAT for domestic electricity• Zero congestion charge fee• Free parking in Westminster• Free parking in other car parks and regions

Page 32: T3 0940 1050 V2

Challenges to BPVs beyond batteries

• Can they do the job?

• Technical risks

• Financial risks (e.g. residual values)

• Driver adoption

• New procedures

Page 33: T3 0940 1050 V2

Hidden Benefits

• Unquantifiable marketing benefits

• Driver calmness

• Running cost predictability

• Vehicle abuse control

Page 34: T3 0940 1050 V2

Summary

• ICE-driven vehicles are well entrenched

• Switch to BPVs does not suit everyone

• For some, with good analysis and strong commitment, BPVs can work very well

ELECTRIC VEHICLE CHARGING INFRASTRUCTURE

BASE at ExCel 17TH March 2010

Page 38: T3 0940 1050 V2

The case for the electric vehicle

Electric vehicle technology developed before the internal combustion engine – in the late 1800’s.

Established fleet of electric New York taxis in 1897.

At the cost of the planet, oil has proved king – until now…Electric cars are around 50% greener than a fossil fuelled equivalent ICE car when using electricity from a mixed source.*

Electric cars are at least 70% greener than a fossil fuelled equivalent ICE car when using electricity from a renewable source.*

The cost per mile to run an electric car, on average is 2 pence and a typical electric commercial vehicle 5 pence, an 88% saving over petrol or diesel fuel costs.

Zero tail pipe emissions at point of use. Extremely quiet.Low Cost maintenance schedule. Zero road fund tax.

The Future

Our transport system is fundamental to our economic strength and growth.

The way we move our goods and ourselves around has strong links with the quality of life.

A shift to ultra low carbon is essential for a sustainable future in transport.

Electric and plug-in-hybrid vehicles are ideal for the shift towards a low carbon transport infrastructure.

Page 40: T3 0940 1050 V2

Charging Infrastructure

The construction of an EV charging infrastructure is essential to support the early adoption of electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles.

Charging stations need to be accessible, safe and easy to use.

There will be 3 types of charging stations available.........

Standard: 13 amp (3Kwh) 240 volt. Generally a 6-7 hour charge from flat.

Fast: 32 amp (7Kwh) 240 volt single phase. Typically 3- 4 hour charge from flat.

Fast: 32 amp (21Kwh) 400 volt 3 phase. Typically 1.5-3 hours charge from flat.

Rapid: Large DC/DC chargers of 60 amps and above. Typically 30 minute charge

from flat. Expensive, will need most probably need a manned operation.

Page 41: T3 0940 1050 V2

The UK government are giving grants for infrastructure as part of their “plugged in places” initiative.

In London, TFL will be offering subsidies to commercial companies for

for the installation of work place EV chargers.

How long will it be before HM Customs and Excise and employers seek

payment for electricity consumed by employees.

Intelligent “smart” chargers will be needed in the workplace and home

to enable energy billing and optimize the allocation of electricity based

on the available supply. Management of the smart grid.

How is allThis goingTo work!
