Gingko 2017 Term 2 Week 2 Papou got his medals ‘cause he did a very, very good job. - William To commemorate ANZAC Day we were fortunate to hear from William’s Papou (grandfather) Phil, who served in the Vietnam war… Phil Just over 100 years ago, brave soldiers arrived by boat to a place called Gallipoli. It was very dark so they landed at the wrong place. Instead of landing by the beach, they landed in a difficult place with cliffs. They fought in a war, defending their country. The brave soldiers had very liOle food and very liOle water. SomeQmes they only had biscuits, which we know as ANZAC biscuits. Lachlan But how did they live? Jordan And they need milk. Phil There wasn’t any milk. Some of them lived and some of them didn’t. They fought for a long Qme and they tried their best. You should be very proud of all the soldiers. Levi I am very proud! Phil And if you see any soldiers, you should clap them and say thank you and well done. Charlie Were you in the war? Phil Yes, I was in the Vietnam war. I was 20 years old. Teagan Oh my gosh. Abbey Were you the only one not killed? Phil No, there were a lot of us that survived. Abbey Did the soldiers even fight on their birthday? Phil Yes, they had to fight every day. It’s important to remember that there are no winners in war. Both sides lose. The soldiers went to war to fight for all of us, so that we have a beauQful free country, thanks to our brave soldiers. Phil invited us to stand whilst he read the Ode before playing a recording of the last post. This experience gave us all so much and was a parQcularly powerful experience for the children, who are in the early stages of learning about the history of the ANZACs and the concept of war. Thank you Phil for your Qme but also for the sacrifices you have made to contribute to our beauQful free country.
