Troop1011isapartoftheBoyScoutsofAmerica,a
time-honoredorganizationthathasbeenattheheartofyoungAmericanmensince1910.Presidents,Congressmen,governors,CEO’s,i.e.ourleaderspastandpresent,havebeenshapedbytheirexperienceasBoyScouts.Onedoesn'tneedtolookfartoseetheimprintthatBoyScoutshasmadeonourcommunityandournation.Infact,almostallfootprintsonthemoonweremadebyanEagleScout.
As your son joins our troop, he will take part in
traditions that will encourage him to grow mentally,physically and spiritually. He will walk the trails, tie theknots,andpledgetheoathlikethousandsbeforehim.Hewillgrowinfellowship,shareinlifelessons,andbecomeaman as you stand by his side over the next few years.Indeed,weencourageyoutobethemost importantpartofhisjourneythroughourscoutingprogram.
Parents are a crucial part of the Scouting success.
Todaytherearemorethan920,000BoyScoutsin42,000troops led by 520,000 adult leaders. Experience hasshownusthattheboyswhomakethemostof Scoutingare those whose parents are also actively involved.While theseyoungmentakeresponsibility for their troopandactivities,itisuptousasadultstoguidethemthroughtheprocessandnurturethemastheylearnthemeritsofsuchresponsibility.
Our troopnever turns itsbackoncivic responsibility.
We assist M.U.S.T. ministries and Mt. Bethel UMC withfoodandclothingcollections,placeflagsonthegravesof
our fallenheroesattheMariettaNationalCemetery,andparticipate in other civic and church activities as anoutward,visiblepartofourcommitmenttoGodandourcommunity.
I can think of no other organization that givesme a
greatersenseofprideandhonorasbeinganadultleaderandparticipatinginTroop1011.ThoughI'vesaidtheScoutOatha thousand times, I still feelgoosebumpswhenmyvoice is joined by the 100 plus youth members of ourtroop. Even more exciting is to see these young menhelping each other, learning together, and growingthroughtheirexperiences.
On behalf of the adult and youthmembers of Troop
1011, we invite you to experience these cherishedmoments firsthand. Letme encourage you to attend thetroop meetings on Monday evenings and find anopportunity tovolunteersometimewith the troop.Yoursupportandenthusiasmwillservetoencourageyoursonin his commitment and see him through from theTenderfoottoEagleScoutranks.
Since Troop 1011 was chartered in 1972, 44 years
ago,over288Scoutshaveearned the rankofEagle, thehighestrankattainablebyyouthmembers.Weareapartofthecontinuedsuccessthatwillimprintourfutures,andwearehonoredtobeapartoftheexperiencesyoursonwillcherishforever.

ThemissionofTroop1011istoserveasacommunityoutreachministryofMt.BethelUnitedMethodistChurchwiththepurposeofmakingtheyouthdevelopmentprogramoftheBoyScoutsofAmericaavailabletoEastCobbCountyyouthofallfaiths.
AimsandMethodsoftheScoutingProgram
TheScoutingprogramhasthreespecificobjectives,commonlyreferredtoasthe"AimsofScouting."TheyareCharacterDevelopment,CitizenshipTraining,andPersonalFitness.Themethodsbywhichtheaimsareachievedarelistedbelowinrandomordertoemphasizetheequalimportanceofeach.
IdealsTheidealsofBoyScoutingarespelledoutintheScoutOath,
Law,Motto,andSlogan.TheBoyScoutmeasureshimselfagainsttheseidealsandcontinuallytriestoimprove.Thegoalsarehigh.Andashereachesforthem,hehassomecontroloverwhatandwhohebecomes.
PatrolsThepatrolmethodgivesBoyScoutsanexperienceingroup
livingandparticipatingcitizenship.Itplacesresponsibilityonyoungshouldersandteachesboyshowtoacceptit.ThepatrolmethodallowsScoutstointeractinsmallgroupswheretheycaneasilyrelatetoeachother.Thesesmallgroupsdeterminetroopactivitiesthroughtheirelectedrepresentatives.
OutdoorProgramsBoyScoutingisdesignedtotakeplaceoutdoors.Itisinthe
outdoorsettingthatScoutsshareresponsibilitiesandlearntolivewithoneanother.Itisherethattheskillsandactivitiespracticedattroopmeetingscomealivewithpurpose.BeingclosetonaturehelpsBoyScoutsgainanappreciationforGod'shandiworkandhumankind'splaceinit.TheoutdoorsisthelaboratoryforBoyScoutstolearnecologyandpracticeconservationofnature'sresources.
Advancement
Scoutingprovidesaseriesofsurmountableobstaclesandstepsinovercomingthemthroughtheadvancementmethod.TheBoyScoutplanshisadvancementandprogressesathisown
paceashemeetseachchallenge.TheBoyScoutisrewardedforeachachievement,whichhelpshimgainself-confidence.ThestepsintheadvancementsystemhelpaBoyScoutgrowinself-relianceandintheabilitytohelpothers.
PersonalGrowthAsBoyScoutsplantheiractivitiesandprogresstowardtheir
goals,theyexperiencepersonalgrowth.TheGoodTurnconceptisamajorpartofthepersonalgrowthmethodofBoyScouting.BoysgrowastheyparticipateincommunityserviceprojectsanddoGoodTurnsforothers.ProbablynodeviceissosuccessfulindevelopingabasisforpersonalgrowthasthedailyGoodTurn.Thereligiousemblemsprogramalsoisalargepartofthepersonalgrowthmethod.FrequentpersonalconferenceswithhisScoutmasterhelpeachBoyScouttodeterminehisgrowthtowardScouting'saims.
LeadershipDevelopmentTheBoyScoutprogramencouragesboystolearnand
practiceleadershipskills.EveryBoyScouthastheopportunitytoparticipateinbothsharedandtotalleadershipsituations.UnderstandingtheconceptsofleadershiphelpsaboyaccepttheleadershiproleofothersandguideshimtowardthecitizenshipaimofScouting.

Troop1011MembershipPolicyTroop1011isanopenmembershiptoboysofallfaithsinthecommunityofBoyScoutage.Weaccept
applicationsfromanyboyandexpecttheybringanadultwillingtosignupforapositionassignmentintheTroopand/orbecomeatrainedleader.Mt.Bethel’sNODRIVEPolicy
Unlessyouhavereceivedaspecialpermitorpermission,VEHICLESareNOTtobedriventoorparkedattheScoutAnnex.ThisisarulesetforthbyourCharterOrganizationandwestronglyrequestthateveryfamilyabidebyit!Troop1011UniformPolicy
TheBoysScoutuniformisanimportantpartoftheScoutingprogram.Infact,theuniformisthelastofeightprogram"methods"throughwhichtheaimsofScoutingareaccomplished.
TheuniformpolicyforTroop1011iseasytoremember.UnlesstheScoutsarespecificallytoldotherwise,theyareexpectedtobedressedinthestandardClassAuniformforallScoutevents.TheClassAuniformconsistsof:
• Troop1011hat(Specialoccasions)• BSAClassAkhakishirtwithallappropriateinsigniaattached.Thecorrectlocationsforinsigniasare
foundinsidethefrontandbackcoversoftheBoyScoutHandbook.• Troop1011T-shirt(provided)tobewornundertheClassAshirt.
Note:T-shirtforwarmdays.• Troop1011neckerchiefandslide(provided,specialoccasions,CourtsofHonor)• BSAgreenpantsorshortswithaBSAgreenwebbeltorotherBoyScoutbelt,i.e.aleatherPhilmont

Thetroopitselfisdividedintopatrolswhichcontainapproximately15-20boys.FirstyearScoutswillbe
placedintonewpatrolswithboysfromthesamepackifpossible.Thesepatrolswillcontinuewhileinscouting.BoyScoutTroopsareboyled.TheboyselecttheirleaderswhothendecidewhattheTroopwilldointhe
comingmonths.AdultleaderssuchastheScoutmaster(SM)andAssistantScoutmasters(ASM)areadviserstotheboys...andtooverseetheiractions.Theyare,afterall,stillboys.
TwiceayearinJanuaryandJuly,theboyselecttheirScoutLeadership.EachpatrolelectsitsPatrolLeader
andAssistantPatrolLeaderfortermsof6months.AllscoutswillalsoelecttheSeniorPatrolLeader(SPL),thetroop’sscoutleader.
OthertroopleadershippositionssuchasAssistantSPL,Quartermaster,Instructor,Historian,Librarian,
Chaplin’sAid,etc.,areappointedbytheSPLforthesametermofoffice.Thesescoutleaders,bothpatrolandtroop,formtheTroopLeadershipCouncil(TLC)tocreateandrunTroop1011’sscoutprogram.

Themaingoalofthe1stYearProgramistohavefunwhilebecomingacompetentBoyScoutandgettingcomfortableinalargetroop.
The1stYearScoutwillbedividedimmediatelyintooneormorepatrolsbasedgenerallyupontheirpreviousPackdens.Wewantfriendstostaytogether,sopleaseinformusofanyreasonsyourScoutwouldliketobewithanotherScoutbeforewecreatethepatrols.
You,theparents,willbeaskedforassistancewiththeScouts.Don’tbesurprised,however,ifweaskyoutoassistwithanotherpatrol,especiallyifyouwereaScoutLeader.TheTroopGuides(whoareboyScouts)andolderScoutswilldotheirbesttoinstructyourScout(thisisdone,ofcourse,underadultsupervision).ButgivetheGuidesachancetoleadbysteppingbackandlettingthemstrugglealittlebit.OurScoutslearn“howit’sdone”andsometimes“howit’sNOTdone”whentheylearnfromolderScouts.
Weareawarethatyoursonsarestillin5thgradeandhavedifferentsleepingrequirements.Tothatend,1stYearScoutswillmeetonMondaynightsfrom7—8:30pm.Thisis30minutesbeforetheregulartroopmeetingbeginsandends.Note:notroopmeetingsduringtheSchoolyearwhenschoolisnotinsession.
Oncetheschoolyearisover,you’llmigratetothemainTroopschedule.
InAprilwillbethe1stYearScoutSkillsOvernight
CampOuthereontheproperty.It’sanopportunityforthemtobondasapatrolanddemonstrateandpracticeScoutingskills.

AsyourheadswirlswithallofthenewthingsBoyScoutsbringstoyouandyourfamily,youmaywonderwhereexactlyyoutheparentfitintothetroopstructure.TheScoutingprogram,withtheexceptionoftheveryhighestjobsintheCouncil,isavolunteerorganization.Nooneinthisoranyothertroopispaid.Eachunitdependsonadultvolunteers(wecallourselvesScouters)todeliverthehighestqualityprogramtotheboys.ItrequiresnospecificjobskillsorpreviousScoutingexperience(becausethereistraining)...justawillingattitudeandadesiretomaketheScoutingprogramthebestitcanbefor...(youguessedit)...theboys!TrainingForAllParents
NomatterwhatroleyoutakeintheTroop,wewantalladultstotaketwoveryimportanton-lineclasseswhichwillhelpyouprepareforScoutingandworkwiththeTroop:

andwewantyoutounderstandhowtheprogramworks”.Thevideopresentsaquickintroductiontogetnewleadersandparentsreadyforscouting.
YouthProtectionTraining(YPT):BoyScoutsisallabout
beingsafe.Notonlydoweprotectthemwhileclimbingrocksandlearningtosail,butalsofromvariouskindsofabuses.Scoutinghasguidelinesonwhatadultsandscoutscanandcan’tdoduringScoutingevents.ThesearefoundintheGuidetoSafeScoutingandtheYPTclassestrainadultsonthesepolicies.Theyattempttoprotectouryouthfrompotentialabuseaswellasprotectouradultleadersandprogramsfrominappropriatesituationsoraccusations.Everyadultwhoworkswiththetroopinanycapacitymustadheretotheseguidelinesforthesafetyandwell-beingoftheScoutsandourprogram.

TroopCommitteemembersattendtheCommitteeMeetingstomakedecisionsabouttroopbusiness.OneofthemostimportantandpleasurabledutiesistoserveonBoardsofReview,heldonthethirdmeetingofeachmonth.ThisiswhenthreeadultssitwithaScoutwhowantstoadvanceinrankandreviewthepastmonthsoftheirexperience.Inatroopoursize,therearemanyofthesereviewsandweneednotonlytheCommitteebuttheparentstohelp.

AssistantScoutmaster
TheAssistantScoutmasters(ASM)reporttoandassisttheScoutmasterinoperatingthetroop.AssistantScoutmastersgenerallyenjoythecampingandotheroutdooraspectsofscoutingandassisttheScoutsinthedevelopmentoftheiroutdoorandleadershipskills.ASMsarenotallowedtositonBoardsofReviewbutoftenconducttheScoutmasterConferenceswheretheboy'sskillsarereviewedandtested.
AssistantScoutmasterstakeveryimportantadditionaltrainingforthisrole.BesidesFastStartandYPT,theywilltake• ScoutmasterPositionSpecificTraining(S24):specifictrainingontherolesofSMandASMandhowtoleadinthetroop.
• IntroductiontoOutdoorLeaderSkills(IOLS):Aweekendcampingtriptolearnandexperiencepatrolskills,justlikehowtheboyswillcamp.
OtherParentOpportunities
IfyouareunabletobeonthetroopcommitteeorasanASM,wedoaskthateveryparentperformashorttermtasksometimeduringtheyear.Examplesofthisincludetransportationtocampouts,givingskilldemonstrationsattroopmeetings,accompanyingthetrooporpatrolonahike,orservingasameritbadgecounselor.Allareexamplesofhelpthatisexpectedoftroopparents.Thereisanopportunityandaneedforeveryfamilytobecomeinvolvedinthelifeofthetroop!

OutdooractivitiesareakeypartofaqualityScoutingprogram,butguidingtheboystoproperlyplanandexecuteanoutingtakesalotofhardwork!InTroop1011,theScoutmasterandCampingCoordinatorultimatelyoverseealloftheOutdoorandSpecialActivities.Butvolunteersarealwaysneededtocoordinateandsuperviseindividualoutingsandevents.PleasecompleteamedicalformandMotorVehicleChecklistsoyoucanparticipateinevents.RequirementsforCamping
AllScoutsregisteredinBoyScouttroopswithacurrentandmedicalformonfileareeligibletoparticipateintrooporpatrolovernightcampouts,camporees,andresidentcamps.However,someactivitieshaveagerequirements:• Scoutsage12through17areeligibletoparticipateinnationaljamborees.
• Scoutsage13through17areeligibletoparticipateinworldjamboreesandcertainhigh-adventureprograms.
Parentsarewelcometoattendanytroopactivities.Thereis
anannualFamilyCampoutusuallyinAugust,forallsiblingsandotherfamilymemberstoattend.Parentsandsiblingwillneedamedicalformtojointhefun.
SummerCamp
OneofthemostimportantactivitiesforthetroopisSummerCamp.Itallowstheboystomakenewfriendsandacquirenewskills.Withoutevenknowingittheywillconcentrateonadvancement,improveteambuildingwithintheirpatrol,andhelpthetroopfunctionmoresmoothlyasaunit.ASummerCampOrientationwillbeheldintheSpringtoacquaintnewparentsaboutapplicablepoliciesandprocedures.
Thetroopoftenparticipatesintwosummercampweeksbecauseofthetroop’ssize.(Onecampsiteusuallywon’tholdatroopthisbig!)EitherofthecampsareapplicabletofirstyearScouts.
DirectquestionsconcerningsummercamptotheASMs.Asalways,adultvolunteersareneeded,especiallywith1styearscouts,tohelpassurethesuccessofthesummercampexperience.
“Camperships”areneed-basedscholarshipsforsummercampprograms.TheycanbeappliedforthroughtheTroopandAtlantaAreaCouncil.SeetheTroopCommitteeChairmanfordetails.
AnnualHealthandMedicalRecord
BSArequiresaMedicalFormbewiththeleadershipatallTroopoutingsandatcamps.Themedicalformisgoodfor1yearandmustberesubmittedannually.Tofindthemostup-to-dateform,downloaditfromtheTroop’swebsiteORsearchthewebusing,“BSAMEDICALFORM.”Choosethefirstlink,thendownloadPARTC(whichincludesPartsA&B.)
ItisaPDFwhichcanbefilledoutandprintedfromyourcomputer.Savethedocument(foreachfamilymember)foreaseoffutureprintings.

AdvancementisanimportantprocessinBoyScouts.Itgivesscoutsaseriesofpositivegoalstoachieveandaclearplanofactiontoachievethem.
BoyScoutsadvancethoughthedifferentranksonthe“TrailtoEagleScout”,thehighestrankinscouting.AllrankrequirementsarelocatedinthebackofBoyScoutHandbook.
AScoutwillfirstworkontheScoutBadgewhenhejoinsTroop1011.IfheearnedtheArrowofLightasaWebelos,he’salreadyknowsthefirst8require-ments.Typicallythisrankisearnedinoneortwomeetings.
Thenextthreeranks,Tenderfoot,2ndClass,and1stClass,teachscoutsthebasicskillsofscouting:camping,healthandfitness,citizenship,andteambuilding.Thehigherranks,Star,LifeandEagle,requirethescouttodemonstrateexpertiseinsubjectsfoundinMeritBadgesrequirementsandacquireleadershipskillsthroughTroopLeadershippositions.

MeritBadgesareearnedinmanyways.SummerCampisagreattimeto“knock-out”manybecausetheprogramandfacilitiesareinplacetoteachthem.TheCouncilandsomeTroopsintheareaofferMeritBadgeClinicsorMBDayswhichareonedayeventstogetameritbadgeofchoice.Theseareusuallyledbyadultswhoareexpertsinthefield:e.g.CrimePreventionledmylawenforcement,photographyledbyphoto-journalist,etc.Troop1011evenhostseventstoearnbadge.LookfortheRifeandShotgunmeritbadgeweekendlastthisyear.
Mostmeritbadges,however,areearnedthroughindividualorsmallgroupeffortthroughouttheyear.ThesewillgoasquicklyorasslowlybasedontheefforttheScoutputsintoit.ThesearefacilitatedbyMeritBadgeCounselors(MBC).Troop1011haveMBCscoveringjustabouteverytopic.Theywillguideandsign-offyourScoutwhenhefinishes.TheGuidetoSafeScoutingwillgovernmeetingswithanymeritbadgecounselor.

OTHERITEMSMotorVehicleChecklist
Priortoanyouting,thetroopwillsubmitaTourPermittotheAtlantaAreaCouncilforapproval.Thisapprovalmakestheoutinga“sanctionedevent”andprovidesincreasedliabilityinsuranceintheeventofanaccident.
IfyourvehicleisbeingusedtotransportScouts,thechecklistcontainstheinformationnecessaryforthetrooptosubmittheTourPermitproperlyandallowyoutotransporttheparticipantsofthescoutingactivity.SubmitaMotorVehicleChecklistsforeveryvehicleyoumayuse.
GrievanceProcedureIfanyadultorleaderofTroop1011hasagrievanceofany
natureinregardtohowthetroopisperformingoreventsthathavetakenplace,theprocessforcommunicatingthegrievanceistobringittotheattentionoftheTroopCommitteeChairman,LaurieChampion.Thisdoesnotnecessarilymeantheissuewillberesolvedtothesatisfactionofthepersonissuingthegrievance,butratherbeginsaformatforopendiscussion.
Ifdeemednecessary,orupontherequestoftheadult/leader,theTroopCommitteeChairmanwillcommunicatethegrievancetotheTroopCommitteeforappropriateaction.

ThetroophasanadultvolunteerwhofunctionsasanQuartermaster.ThispersonwillworkwiththeScoutmasterandthePatrolQuartermastersinacquiring,takinginventory,disbursingandmaintainingtroopequipment.VolunteersareneededtohelpmaintainandperiodicallyimprovetheScoutAnnexandsurroundings.
TrainingTroop1011encouragesScoutsandadultsaliketotake
