2017 Bishop’s Lenten Appeal Offering hands to serve and hearts to love

The Bishop’s Lenten Appeal is in full swing and we are asking every household in our parish to support this appeal to the extent that they are able. The BLA funds many programs, services and ministries that serve people in need and furthers Jesus’ Mission in our diocese. Let us join together to do the Lord’s work – works that touch the lives and souls of thousands of people in our diocese. Thank you!

For more information about these programs, please refer to the diocesan website: http://www.arlingtondiocese.org/Bishops-Lenten-Appeal/BLA-Supported-Programs-and-Ministries/#accordion-href_10

From Our Pastor

(I wanted share with you my thoughts from Ash Wednesday. It is a call to meet Christ again; to walk with Him to Calvary; to meet him on the road; to “seek him first” in all that we do. God Bless.)

Our readings [last] Sunday reminded us that we are never truly alone. We may feel abandoned at times; without friends, without understanding and even without hope. But Isaiah's words call us out from our darkness; though even your mother may forget you, "I will not." Matthew’s gospel echoes this same sentiment. God provides for us in ways seen and unseen; we are not forgotten in His eyes.

Yet this is a difficult concept when sitting with a seriously ill spouse, when searching for a job, when literally we feel we cannot face once more challenge. Matthew is not saying we should ignore those cares, for they are real and indeed we must face them. Rather, we must face them with God. I am not trying to sound like a Pollyanna. Life is sometimes unfair and hard. But I have ultimately found grace in the challenges I've faced. And I've witnessed profound examples of Christ's presence and action in the lives of others.

Lent calls us from the darkness of despair to the light of hope - to the promise of the resurrection. This season calls for us to let go of the things which keep us mired in the dark. Some may do this by moving past unhealthy habits; some may seek a deeper spiritual life by increased prayer or partaking more frequently of the sacraments. I especially urge you to enter into conversation with Christ in the confessional. Allow Him into your heart; "to be still and know that I am."

Set your feet upon "the rock" of our savior, and he will make your "footsteps firm" as we walk together these 40 days.

~Fr. Posey

PRAYER There are many ways to spend time with Jesus and Scripture during Lent:

• Stop by church Wednesday evenings from 6:30-8:00pm as we create a prayerful setting with Gregorian chants and Lenten devotional materials. Confession will also be available.

• Participate in 40 Days for Life (40daysforlife.com) either on the sidewalks at 900 S. Washington Street or through personal prayer. Contact [email protected] for details.

FASTING Fasting helps us refocus on God. On Ash Wednesday and Good Friday, all healthy Catholics ages 18-59 are required to fast and abstain from meat. Fasting means one main meal and no more than two small meals that together don’t equal the main meal. Catholics 14 and older are to abstain from meat on Fridays throughout Lent.

ALMSGIVING Giving sacrificially during Lent connects us to those who are poor and helps connect our relationship with Jesus to our relationships with others. Our Social Outreach Committee collects food donations and offers opportunities to “Focus on Hunger” in our community. Operation Rice Bowl supports efforts to end hunger worldwide (crsricebowl.org)

IT’S TIME FOR OUR ANNUAL CAR RAFFLE All Saints Parish in Manassas has invited St. James once again to participate in their 5-car and cash raffle. Prizes this year include five brand new 2017 vehicles from Koons of Manassas (Honda Civic, Buick Verano, GMC Sierra Truck, Honda CRV Sport Utility and Honda Odyssey Van). You should have received your car raffle tickets in the mail.

This raffle allows the purchaser of a single $5.00 ticket the prospect of winning a vehicle or a share of the $20,000 in cash prizes. This makes “selling” the tickets at work or to family, friends, and neighbors more like an opportunity – just show them the ticket – it will sell itself! The odds of winning with this raffle are far better than winning the Lottery or Power Ball. So please participate in this year’s car raffle. Our parish ministries will benefit! Last year, the car raffle earned nearly $12,000 for the parish.

Please direct any questions to Rich Blickendorfer at 703-532-8815.

Good luck!

March 5 - First Sunday in Lent Readings: Genesis 2:7-9, 3:1-7; Psalm 51; Romans 5:12-19; Matthew 4:1-11

http://www.usccb.org/bible/readings/030517.cfm

In this week's reflection, Jules Miles encourages us to make God our source and center. She relates the three temptations Jesus faced in the desert to our lives. Just as Jesus was hungry, sometimes our struggle to meet basic human necessities leads us to cut corners and deny God or lose faith. We succumb to the invitation to “throw yourself down” when we expect God to grant our prayers like a magic genie instead of trusting that our loving Father provides what is best for us according to his plan. Just as he offered Jesus all the kingdoms in the world, the devil offers us popularity and power in exchange for silence, but we are called to proclaim God's merciful love.

This Lent we are invited to re-center our lives on God. We can cultivate our relationship with God through prayer, to trust in him and to discuss our faith journey with friends and family.

Reflection: Find a practical way to implement one of Jesus’s teachings about temptationthis week.

Pro-Life Ministry Update

In a prior bulletin article, Fr. Posey encouraged each of us to participate in activities that promote and defend all life. “We do this because our support must go beyond just telling people not to abort, but to be there to help the person choose to give birth: through prayer, encouragement and practical assistance.” We help through prayer:

Please join us for the Lenten 40 Days for Life campaign (www.40daysforlife.com), beginning on Wednesday, March 1 in hundreds of cities and over 20 countries. Our local campaign will be in front of the Falls Church Healthcare Center, 900 South Washington Street. For 40 days and nights, people of faith and conscience will stand in constant, peaceful vigil outside hundreds of abortion facilities … to do the single most important thing we can do: PRAY. The kickoff vigil will be on Tuesday, February 28 at 7:00 pm at the same location. You may also join prayer novenas through Priests for Life (www.priestsforlife.org) any time.

We help through action:

Tepeyac Family Center serves pregnant women of all races, creeds, and economic statuses, whether they can pay or not; a special aspect of their practice is to assist pregnant women in financial crisis. Tepeyac Family Center is moving into expanded facilities and needs funds to complete the project. Everything is required from stethoscopes to sponsorship of the waiting room. Interested in helping? Social Outreach Committee Focus on Hunger-Lenten Food Collection

“Peace begins when the hungry are fed.” Dorothy Day

Today, food donated by St. James’ parishioners will be given to the Falls Church Community Service Council (FCS). St. James is a founding member of the Council.

FCS maintains a food pantry at Knox Presbyterian Church which provides non-perishable and fresh food to families in need. Volunteer staff at the food pantry deliver food to families six days a week --Monday through Saturday. Food Donations come from member congregations, individuals and local food drives. Additional critical food is purchased when needed as funds are available. Volunteers bag and deliver a week's supply of food to needy clients.

Your donations of rice, beans and cereal remain at St. James for our monthly food distribution. Each weekend other food items will go to these organizations: Weekend of March 4/5 - Falls Church Community Service Council Weekend of March 11/12 – Food for Others Weekend of March 18/19 – St. James Food Distribution Program Weekend of March 25/26 – St. James Food Distribution Program

Thank you for your generosity to those in need!

This year we are celebrating our 125th anniversary with events, our oral history project and a weekly history lesson in our bulletin! Return here to relive our growth from a small frame church to our present iconic building which is home to thousands of parishioners.

Save the date for our celebratory Mass & Reception on Sunday, May 21 at the noon Mass!

The storied Father Van was the third pastor of St. James. In early 1900, Amadeus Joseph Van Ingelgem left his native Belgium after 28 years of priesthood for the rough terrain of North America. Bishop van de Vyver recruited him to Virginia and, at the age of 50, Father Van began six years of missionary treks through the valley counties of the Commonwealth on Dixie, his black stallion.

After a year as the bishop’s secretary and chaplain at Oak Ridge, the estate of Thomas Fortune Ryan and his wife Ida in Nelson County, Virginia, Father Van reminded the bishop that he had come to serve all the people, not just the wealthy benefactors of the church. The bishop sent him to St. James in 1909.

Father Van inherited not only the growing St. James parish, but also missions in Fairfax Station, Pleasant Valley, El Nido in McLean, Herndon, Annandale, Purcellville and Leesburg. He brought the sacraments to the Catholics in these towns usually riding Doc, the horse he had bought from the former pastor, Father Tearney.

Father Van fostered St. James School by persuading the IHM Sisters to come to Falls Church in 1923. He presided at the parish suppers prepared by the women of St. James and visited his parishioners in their homes. He spent his own funds and gifts from his family in Belgium to assist parishioners in need and for repairs and improvements to the church. He enlarged the rectory, furnishing the basement with a billiard table where he played with men of the parish. He was invited to preach in local Protestant churches, and was “beloved by the entire community,” according to a history of Falls Church.

In 1931, he persuaded Bishop Brennan to come to St. James to ordain Father Robert Beattie, a first for the little Falls Church parish. Father Beattie and his brother Dixon, also a priest, were both sons of St. James. The brothers were grandsons of Fountain Beattie, John Mosby’s lieutenant, who is buried in St. James cemetery.

Father Van celebrated his Golden Jubilee at St. James in 1925, with honors from his local people as well as from the Embassy of Belgium. A purse of $1,000 was presented to him, and he turned it over to the church to pay off a debt on the heating system.

A parishioner from Father Van’s years remembered him this way: “Father Van was on the smallish side with a large domed head full of brains, philosophy, a distinct sense of humor and an overpowering love of mankind. … I do not remember that he ever preached a short sermon.”

Father Van left St. James in 1931 to become chaplain to the Visitation Sisters in Richmond. He died there in 1935 at the age of 83. A bronze plaque honoring Father Van can be found to the left of the sanctuary under the windows of Saints Matthew and Bartholomew, which are dedicated to the memory of the “little Belgian.”
