Sunday Reading Reflection
Happy Fourth Sunday of Easter, Sometimes we feel the persecution like the apostles did in the first reading but we don’t feel the consolation like they did. One reason is because we don’t preach to people in the right way.
Preaching, or sharing the faith, needs to be a conversation. It is never an announcement and then a running away. It is not finding the magic word or clever argument. The preaching of the apostles was always a conversation. It included disagreements with the people to whom they were in conversation. It had stages. It included times where they would shake the dust from their feet. (If you follow their travels they come back to the people and do this again on their return trip.) We need to be with people and get to know them. If we don’t know how to have a conversation or can’t have one with our friends and neighbors and children and grandchildren and our children’s fiancées and friends, we can’t convert them and we won’t have that happiness that we want. Even when we have a disagreement, we can rejoice. Maybe, even especially. It means we are actually talking to someone and that progress is being made. Practical take away: This week, have a conversation with a neighbor, family member, or co worker. It is the groundwork for any meaningful sharing of Christ, our joy. The Archdiocese of Boston joyfully announces the

Our collection this past weekend was: $4,310.00. Our collection for our mortgage was: $1,257.00. There is no 2nd collection this weekend. Our 2nd collection for next weekend is for our
utilities.
Did you notice how beautiful our parish lawn looks? You can thank, in part, Fr. Jason. Last year, we discontinued our bi-weekly lawn care services. Fr. Jason stepped up to the plate and voluntarily used his personal lawnmower to mow the lawn each week. As we headed into the winter months, he kept up with the mowing right up until the snow fell. Just before Easter, Confirmation and our First Communions, we had our old lawn care company come in and do a very large clean-up, edging, sweeping, mowing, delivery and installation of mulch, etc. (Beyond Fr. Jason’s area of expertise). It does look amazing, however, it cost us over $4,000.00. If you would like to make a donation to help offset this expense, please feel free! We would love your help with this. As always, this donation will be noted in your year end tax statement from St. John’s.
Over the past few months we have been spending on average $5,600.00 for the electricity and oil for our buildings. As you can see from the table below, we are only bringing in on average $1,700.00/month for these expenses. In order to make ends meet, we have been using the proceeds from the bazaar and Christmas lottery. We have depleted all of that money now, and I am concerned as to how we will continue to pay these bills.
In years past, we would send in $15,000.00 to pre-buy our oil, and lock in the cheaper rate. We have been unable to do so lately. Our monthly 2nd collection for our utilities used to easily cover all these bills; unfortunately, this is no longer the case. This month, we collected less than $1,700.00. Please consider donating to our monthly utility collection or make a one-time gift to help us out.
To date we have received $9,990.00 towards our goal of $22,305.00 for the Catholic Appeal. We are at approximately 45% of our assessment. If we don’t raise the entire $22,305.00, we will be billed by the Archdiocese for the amount that we are short. If we go over our amount, then we will receive a percentage back to the parish. Please pick up an orange envelope to make your donation today.
On a brighter note, you may have noticed some painting being done around here. As we stated in our Inspiring Hope Capital Campaign, we want to have our property looking nice again. We have hired a painter to come in and do some much needed power washing, scraping, sanding and painting of the rectory and church. This is all thanks to your generosity through the campaign. The money that was collected so far for this capital campaign is what is paying for this job.... no other money will be used. Thank you for this ----- it may take a while to complete, but will look absolutely wonderful once completed!
