A Theology of “perhaps” “Perhaps this is the reason he was separated from you for a
while, so that you might have him back forever…” Paul’s letterto Philemon
Have you ever considered the importance of the small word “perhaps”? I started reading a
book by the theologian John Caputo, the Insistence of God , in which the theologian con-siders just the question that I have posed; in fact, he insists that the Church should strive fora theology based on the word! I don’t know about you, but “perhaps” makes me uneasy. If I were to ask for something and someone were to say, “Perhaps I will get it for you…” I would be anxiousand frustrated. That little adverb expresses “maybe…maybe not”; it also leads me to believe that someonemay agree with me, but maybe not. In “perhaps,” I am left with a true dilemma: can I or can I not antici-pate help from the person who wields such a powerful word of doubt? We don’t have to go too far down that road of questioning before we end up with a question for God: If the-ology is based on “perhaps”, what can one say about God? Ah, there is a good question, indeed! As our con-gregation knows, God cannot be put in a box. The “one, holy, catholic, and apostolic Church” cannot simplyapply labels to God and expect God to act exactly as we wish. The scriptures remind us that time and againGod has acted outside the confines of human comprehension. Perhaps the time has ripened for the Churchto expect the unexpected from God! Isn’t it high time we take the shackles from God and allow God to actas God does – through a “perhaps” world? Look around you: Can you explain everything you can see? I must admit that I cannot. Even science cannotfully explain all that is “seen and unseen”. The best humanity can do to explain creation is to observe it, la-bel it, and say, “Perhaps we are correct in our observation – only God knows.” Paul’s short letter to Philemon, calls the receiver of the letter to consider receiving the escaped slave Onesi-mus as a brother! Will Philemon reconsider punishing Onesimus, or will he follow protocol? Paul asks nothingless than for Philemon to consider “perhaps” as an option of new life in Christ. We may never know, but Paulpresented the famous, “Perhaps”, as a sign of God’s grace. How difficult would it have been for you or me tofollow Paul’s advice?
As we prepare to enter into the Lent, and the mysteries of Holy Week, the Passion and Resurrection of the
Christ, we first go through this wonderful time after the Epiphany. These “ordinary” Sundays provide theChurch the environment to imagine what God could be like among us, how God might, perhaps, challengeus; this time may even, perhaps, afford us some time to see God “with us”, among us, working through us – perhaps. Will you keep your eyes and ears open in observation of God’s work? In this season after the Epiphany, I pray that God open our hearts to less need for certainty; that God willopen our very selves to less need for right or wrong, and allow us to experience the fullness of divine graceby living! Perhaps God will show us something new…
God’s peace, Pr Tim

DEACON SUPPORT TEAM
All members should be aware of their deacon and hopefully have met him or her to discuss any concerns or questions you may have had. Your deacons have a sincere interest in serving your needand encourage you to bring your needs to the attention of Pastor, the deacon group or council whichever is appropriate. In turn, we trust you have an equally sincere interest in getting to know your deacon as a present and future friend and confidant. We also want to emphasize the importance ospeaking with Pastor whenever the need arises. He wants to know your concerns to help provide
solution or answers to your questions. He remains the best resource within our congregation to sharwisdom and knowledge.Deacons are not exempt from having a deacon of their own. At times we need someone willing to listen and we turn to our deacon. In our bi-monthly meetings, the nine deacons discuss a variety of topics concerning the spiritual welfare of the congregation. Most importantly we are available for youwhen your needs might require someone to talk with other than Pastor Tim. We are grateful for the opportunity to serve the members of Zion’s Lutheran Church and we encouragyou to reach out to your deacon whenever the need arises. Please call the church office for any assistance.
