IRF walks its talk, and as a leader in environmental issues for road construction, we are proud to make the2nd IRF Conference on ‘Roads and Environment’ carbon neutral with myclimate, one of the leading provid-ers of carbon offsetting measures.

The carbon offset charge levied from the registration fees will fund emissions reductions through one ofthe independently verified projects of the myclimate portfolio. All their projects are developed according tothe criteria defined by the Gold Standard. More information on the offset projects can be found onwww.myclimate.org.

WELCOME TO THE 2ND IRF CONFERENCE ON

ROADS AND ENVIRONMENT

As the Chairman of this 2nd IRF Conference on Roads and Environment, I am pleased to inviteyou to join us in Geneva, Switzerland, for this practice and future oriented event held on 10 and11 November 2008.

At the first IRF Conference on Roads and Environment, we concluded that there is no one silverbullet to tackle the increasing environmental challenge.

Under the theme “Emissions and pollution: addressing the challenge”, we will have the opportunity at this secondconference to look into more details the priority themes identified last year. We will examine different ways to tackleemissions and pollutions of water, air, noise and materials. Concrete examples of proven best practices will show thetime, research and resources invested by the road industry into eco-friendly processes and materials. Researchers, poli-cy-makers, practitioners from both the public and the private sector will gather in Geneva to present and discuss inspi-ring solutions to address the environmental challenge we face today to ensure a better world tomorrow.

The 2nd IRF Conference on Roads and Environment will also host a high level panel discussion on ‘Trading on CarbonMarkets’. The financial community is offering a number of ‘green’ investment opportunities. Specialist will look into sen-se and non-sense of these financial instruments, the problems of carbon pricing and the social responsibility of inves-tors.

The upcoming Conference will be a unique opportunity to learn about the latest technical developments in the road sec-tor and to discover all about the newest trends in investment policies. I look forward to meeting you in Geneva to shareour experiences in what I’m sure will be enriching discussions!
