WelcomeWe love Spring here at Toad Hall – and we know our many gardening friends join us in anticipating the colours and scents of the new season’s flowers here in our lovely walled garden.

It’s not just the bedding plants that are bursting into bloom. Shrubs and fruit trees, herbaceous plants and vegetables, roses and herbs are inviting the gardener back to work to create a beautiful garden once again for 2017.

We’re often called The Gardener’s Garden Centre, and we love sharing our passion for plants with you. We also stock quality tools and machinery to help ease the load, as well as delightful garden features and outdoor furniture to help you enjoy your garden to the full.

For Toby and Skit Stubbs, a dream came true when they bought a derelict and overgrown walled garden near Henley-on-Thames in 1952. With a passion for gardening, they transformed the space, growing vegetables before specialising in flowering plants in 1960. By 1969 their exhibits were winning prizes at Chelsea and Hampton Court Flower Shows.

When their son Tony joined them in the business in 1972, Toad Hall became a garden centre known for the quality of its plants and selling to a wide local community. The Garden Machinery Department set up in 1984 soon won a reputation as the best place to find the widest variety of quality equipment, backed up by an expert in-house repair shop.

Toad Hall was one of the first garden centres to grow large quantities of the newly introduced bedding plants such as polyanthus, primrose, pansy and impatiens, which have transformed today’s borders and baskets. We still grow masses of bedding plants today and

are always glad to welcome the latest varieties – we have some beauties for you to discover this Spring. And all at very attractive prices.

We are proud to also supply plants to some of the exhibitors at Chelsea and Hampton Court, as well as supporting the local community including Henley in Bloom and charity causes.

Toad Hall is still an independent and passionate family business, with Tony’s sons Tristan and Damian now at the helm along with general manager and plant expert Martyn Sheldrake, and a loyal and experienced team who are always glad to share with you their expertise and their love of plants.

For taller herbaceous at the back of a border, consider lupins – they come in glorious shades - or delphinium and the subtle hues of verbena. Graduating heights could lead to the front with perhaps peony, lavender, lily, geum.

Choose the right soil or compost for your choice of veg

Keep well watered at all times, especially when plants are young

Feed your plants with the appropriate fertiliser, eg cabbage likes high nitrogen, tomato prefers high potassium when fruit starts to develop. We have a wide choice at Toad Hall

Pick regularly to produce a bigger crop, eg beans, peas, rhubarb

Herbs picked fresh from the garden transform any dish: mint with tzatziki or lamb, dill with white fish, basil with anything Italian and so many more.

Find dozens of herbs at Toad Hall, all well established in 9cm pots. Pop them on the windowsill or plant in the border or a container. Some, like thyme and chives, may thrive in the garden for years.

A rosemary bush or a bay tree provide evergreen attraction, as well as flavour for the cookpot.

Fruit treesYou may not have space for an orchard, but most modest gardens can fit in a fruit tree or two, thanks to the range of varieties available. Here at Toad Hall you’ll find the perfect tree for the space available.

• Strawberries benefit from a fibre mat or straw beneath the leaves. Keep well watered, and apply a fertiliser such as Growmore in early spring. Give a liquid potash feed every week or two during the growing season.

• Blueberries need an acidic soil and are ideal for containers.

• Raspberries and most other soft fruits may need covering with netting to deter birds.

Pamper your plantsOur houseplants are grown in top quality potting compost

to give them a good start. Because they grow in a restricted space, many benefit from a liquid feed in spring and summer.

• Specialist feeds for specific plants eg azalea, orchid, citrus

Sow seed from March to October for the most economical option, or buy turf ready to lay. For both turf and seed, prepare the ground well and keep the grass well watered until established.

Lawn careFeed: Get your lawn in tip-top condition for the summer ahead by applying EverGreen Complete between April to September. This contains a lawn weedkiller, mosskiller and fertiliser. For long-lasting healthy greening apply EverGreen Extreme Green.

Bare patches: Use a treatment such as Patch Magic which combines grass seed, Miracle-Gro plant food and coir that expands to protect the seed.
