ANNUAL SOLEMN EUCHARISTIC ADORATION

Saturday, January 20th (after morning Mass—5:30 p.m.) and Sunday, January 21st (after 9:30 Mass—closing at 3 p.m.)

Please Note: It is never acceptable or appropriate to have the exposi-tion of the Blessed Sacrament on the altar, if there is no one in church

for prayer and adoration. Hence, a sign-up sheet is available in the back of the church for individuals and/or families to embrace an hour of prayer and adoration on Saturday or on Sunday. The hours of ado-ration overlap, so that someone is present in church throughout the

time of the exposition of the Blessed Sacrament.

Ideally, it would be good to have several people signed up for each hour, in case someone forgets, is sick, or runs into complications and

can’t be present for the designated time of prayer. Our Solemn Eu-charistic Devotions will conclude with a parish potluck dinner

on Sunday, January 21st, at 4 p.m. to which you are cordially invited to join us for good food and fellowship in the parish hall. Should

Mother Nature bring unfavorable weather to our area that weekend, the Eucharistic Devotions will be cancelled.

7 JANUARY 2018 3 THE EPIPHANY OF THE LORD

The Musings of Our Pastor

A "gift of pleasing fragrance" might awaken the noses of some people, and make them think about a bottle of costly perfume given by one's beloved partner for Christmas, for Val-entine's Day or on some other memorable occasion. A "gift of pleasing fragrance" might take you down memory lane, when you were invited to someone's home for a festive dinner, and you were greeted at the door by the aroma of fresh bread and other wonderful things being prepared for your enjoyment. A "gift of pleasing fragrance" might make you ( me, too!) think of Springtime, when the lilacs are in full bloom and God's gifts of new life abound all around you in the world of nature.

On this glorious Feast of the Epiphany, when the Astrologers from the East made their way into the presence of Jesus, the Newborn King of the Jews, we are told that they present-ed Jesus with precious gifts. One such gift was frankincense, which my Webster's Dictionary defines as a "fragrant gum resin from trees of Somalia and coastal Arabia". It was used in ancient times for religious rites and for embalming. I have sometimes wondered what Mary and Joseph did with these gifts. Obviously, the gold would be helpful for living expenses, especially for this poor couple now raising a new baby. Maybe Mary and Joseph stashed the other 2 gifts somewhere in their humble home, much like I do sometimes, as a reminder, a keepsake of a very memorable visit from these curious, royal visitors from the East.

Today is a good day, especially amidst the Christmas Season and amidst the freshness of a New Year, to think about "gifts of pleasing fragrance" we might bring to or share with the Lord throughout our journey of life on earth. The "pleasing fragrance" of so many of these gifts we might bring to or share with the Lord comes not from perfumes or artificial additives, but from refreshing qualities like authentic love, sincere devotion, deeply-rooted faith, a com-mitment to justice and the greater good of others, humble service, forgiveness, and other such things, which allow others to "catch a whiff" of the divine goodness of God at work with-in us. Remember those words of John in the New Testament: Whenever we love one an-other, God dwells in us and his love is brought to perfection in us. Sometimes, these gifts we bring to or share with the Lord can, indeed, be quite costly because they require the precious commodity of our time or the element of personal sacrifice and inconvenience. Authentic love of God and authentic love for our neighbors is not cheap or easy!! That is the message of the Cross and the ongoing challenge of Christian discipleship. The investment in these "gifts of pleasing fragrance", though, can be such an avenue for fulfillment, growth and happi-ness on earth, as well as being a pathway to the fullness of life with God in Heaven after death.

Like the Oil of Chrism used in the Sacrament of Confirmation, which has a powerful and lingering aroma, may our loving devotion to God and our loving concern for others capture the attention of our world, much like a "pleasing fragrance", and awaken them to the abiding presence of God in our midst. Maybe, just maybe, some will be drawn to faith in Jesus Christ, the Savior of the World, because something about our lives has revealed to them the glory of God Himself! Don't underestimate the possibilities! We adore you, O Christ, and we bless you today and all the days of our life!

Father Ken

THANK YOU...THANK YOU...THANK YOU...

Holy Trinity Parish is indebted to Ma-rie Bruggeman, Bridget Muhlenkamp, Jill Muhlenkamp, and Kelsi Muhlen-kamp for the leadership, time, and en-ergy they have given for the develop-

ment of the new pictorial directory for our parish. Job well done, ladies!

It is one of those projects that can "drop in one's lap" and test one's pa-tience and fortitude for lots of rea-

sons. In the end though, the pictorial directory is a good asset for putting names and faces of people together,

especially for newcomers to the parish community, like your Pastor! For the next directory, the different Muhlen-

kamp Clans ought to be given a special color or something, so that they can be

connected together in their separate family groups!

God bless each of the members of the pictorial directory committee for see-

ing this project through to completion. Thank you very much!

A Christmas Blessing!

Recently, a donation of $250.00

was received in the mail from the Knights of Columbus, Bishop Ar-

nold Assembly No. 243, Muncie, Indiana. We are most grateful for this gift and ask God to bless the

Knights of Columbus, along with all of the other generous benefac-

tors of our parish community.
