SCRIPTURAL WORSHIP

THE LORD’S DAY• What Day is it?– “I was in the Spirit on the Lord's Day…”

{Revelation 1:10}• The Sabbath? NO!• Sabbath given to the Jews because of

deliverance of Egypt.– “And remember that you were a slave in the land

of Egypt, and the LORD your God brought you out from there by a mighty hand and by an outstretched arm; therefore the LORD your God commanded you to keep the Sabbath day.” {Deuteronomy 5:15}

THE LORD’S DAY• The Sabbath? NO!• God said it would cease.– “I will also cause all her mirth to cease,

Her feast days, Her New Moons, Her Sabbaths-All her appointed feasts.” {Hosea 2:11}

THE LORD’S DAY• The Sabbath? NO!• Paul said it did cease with the crucifixion of

Christ, with the Law nailed to the cross.– “Having wiped out the handwriting of requirements

that was against us, which was contrary to us. And He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross. Having disarmed principalities and powers, He made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them in it. So let no one judge you in food or in drink, or regarding a festival or a new moon or sabbaths, which are a shadow of things to come, but the substance is of Christ.” {Colossians 2:14-17}

THE LORD’S DAY• The First day of the week is the

Lord’s Day.• Day of the resurrection of Christ.– “Now on the first day of the week... Then the

other disciple, who came to the tomb first, went in also; and he saw and believed.”” {John 20:1,8}

– “Now on the first day of the week, very early in the morning…The Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again .”{Luke 24:1,7}

THE LORD’S DAY• The First day of the week is the

Lord’s Day.• Church established and Spirit came on

that day.– “When the Day of Pentecost had fully come, they

were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. Then there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.” {Acts 2:1-4}

THE LORD’S DAY• The First day of the week is the

Lord’s Day.• Pentecost always came on the first

day of the week.– “And you shall count for yourselves from

the day after the Sabbath, from the day that you brought the sheaf of the wave offering: seven Sabbaths shall be completed.” {Leviticus 23:15}

THE LORD’S DAY• The First day of the week is the

Lord’s Day.• Churches of New Testament days

worshipped on that day (Acts 20:7) came together to break bread and laid by in store in common treasury.– “On the first day of the week let each one

of you lay something aside, storing up as he may prosper, that there be no collections when I come.” {1 Corinthians 16:2}

THE SPIRIT OF THEIR WORSHIP:

• Must be in Spirit• Proper attitude

and motive

• “But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship Him. God is a Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.” {John 4:23,24}

THE SPIRIT OF THEIR WORSHIP:

• Worship with grace in your hearts.

• “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.” {Colossians 3:16}

THE SPIRIT OF THEIR WORSHIP:

• Make melody with our hearts—our hearts must accompany the singing of our voices.

• “Speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord.” {Ephesians 5:19}

THE SPIRIT OF THEIR WORSHIP:

• Praying and singing with spirit and understanding.

• “What is the conclusion then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will also pray with the understanding. I will sing with the spirit, and I will also sing with the understanding.” {1 Corinthians 14:15}

THE SPIRIT OF THEIR WORSHIP:

• Our hearts must be in our worship.

• “Hypocrites! Well did Isaiah prophesy about you, saying: These people draw near to Me with their mouth, And honor Me with their lips, But their heart is far from Me. And in vain they worship Me, Teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.” {Matthew 15:7-9}

THE SPIRIT OF THEIR WORSHIP:

• Corinthians due to division, carnality, and revelry could not worship with proper heart; condemned by Paul.

• “Now in giving these instructions I do not praise you, since you come together not for the better but for the worse... But if anyone is hungry, let him eat at home, lest you come together for judgment…” {1 Corinthians 11:17,34}

THE ITEMS OF WORSHIP ACCORDING TO NEW TESTAMENT PLAN:

• Lord’s Supper on first day of the week.

• “For I received from the Lord that which I also delivered to you: that the Lord Jesus on the same night in which He was betrayed took bread; and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, "Take, eat; this is My body which is broken for you; do this in remembrance of Me…” {1 Corinthians 11:23,24}

THE ITEMS OF WORSHIP ACCORDING TO NEW TESTAMENT PLAN:

• Lord’s Supper on first day of the week.

• “In the same manner He also took the cup after supper, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in My blood. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me. For as often as you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord's death till He comes. ” {1 Corinthians 11:25,26}

THE ITEMS OF WORSHIP ACCORDING TO NEW TESTAMENT PLAN:

• Singing.• Only kind of music

in the New Testament plan.

• “Speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord. ” {Ephesians 5:19}

THE ITEMS OF WORSHIP ACCORDING TO NEW TESTAMENT PLAN:

• Prayer • “Therefore I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men... I desire therefore that men pray everywhere, lifting up holy hands, without wrath and doubting. ” {1 Timothy 2:1,8}

THE ITEMS OF WORSHIP ACCORDING TO NEW TESTAMENT PLAN:

• Giving.• Fellowship by

laying by and store according to one’s prosperity.

• “But this I say: He who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and he who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. So let each one give as he purposes in his heart, not grudgingly or of necessity; for God loves a cheerful giver. ” {2 Corinthians 9:6,7}

THE ITEMS OF WORSHIP ACCORDING TO NEW TESTAMENT PLAN:

• Preaching.• Sharing the good

news of the gospel.

• “I charge you therefore before God and the Lord Jesus Christ, who will judge the living and the dead at His appearing and His kingdom: Preach the word! Be ready in season and out of season. Convince, rebuke, exhort, with all longsuffering and teaching. ” {2 Timothy 4:1,2}

WE MUST CONTINUE STEADFASTLY IN THIS TYPE OF

WORSHIP• This must become

a priority in my life.

• My desire should be to worship with the saints—always!

• “And they continued steadfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in prayers. ” {Acts2:42}

WE MUST CONTINUE STEADFASTLY IN THIS TYPE

OF WORSHIP• God’s people are

admonished not to neglect the assembly of the saints.

• “And let us consider one another in order to stir up love and good works, not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another...” {Hebrews 10:24,25}

CONCLUSION• A corruption of

this plan of worship by changing:– The day– Spirit– Items of worship– Means destroying

the identity of the Lord’s church!

– Loss of divine recognition

• “Whoever transgresses and does not abide in the doctrine of Christ does not have God. He who abides in the doctrine of Christ has both the Father and the Son.” {2 John 9}
